The annual Rabies Drive in Calhoun County will be held April 4th through 9th.  Port Lavaca veterinarians Dr. Wilson, Dr. Motl and Dr. McClennan will be traveling throughout the county administering rabies vaccinations at the discounted rate of $8.00.

This is the time to get your pet’s yearly rabies shot, plus other immunizations such as distemper/parvo for dogs and distemper/feline leukemia for cats at a much discounted rate. Other shots, including the rattlesnake vaccination are also available.

Additionally, during the Rabies Drive week, vaccinations and lab work done at the veterinarian’ offices will be discounted.

Please take advantage of this opportunity to protect your pets from rabies and other debilitating and fatal diseases.

Prayer is a privilege, a duty, a means, instrument, condition of gaining God’s aid. It is the avenue through which God supplies mankind’s needs. Prayer can be viewed as worship, work, and warfare.
Prayer is worship, not just a means of getting things from God. It is through prayer that we come to know God initially and more intimately. Prayer affirms the worthiness of God. Prayer as worship recognizes the worth of the One to Whom we pray. Prayer is giving God the proper place in our lives. It is by prayer that we enter into God’s holy temple, into the throne room of God, unto the throne of grace. Hebrews 4:16 says: Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Prayer is the only access into the throne room of God. What a wonder that we have this privilege. In a moment we can stand before God and with all the company of heaven worship and adore the God of our salvation. It is there that we truly worship.

Prayer as work – John 14:12-14 says: I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I  have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name and I will do it. Oswald Chambers said, “Prayer does not fit us for the greater works; prayer is the greater works.” John 6:28-29 says: Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” Believing in Jesus! How deep is our belief? How sincere is our belief? Much of our work does not qualify as a work “of” God. Maybe it might be the work “for” God, but not the work “of” God. There is a vital difference. The work “of” God is simply God at work in us in an unhindered capacity. It is only by prayer that our work can be the work “of” God. Prayer implements God’s work in us. Prayer is work and without prayer, our work “for” God is in vain. Mankind prays and worships God. Mankind prays and works toward the fulfillment of the Kingdom of God. As mankind prays, he looks at God in worship and from worship serves the Lord in prayerful work toward others. It is His work and He wants to do it through us and that all comes about by prayer. It is with our praying that God works. It is while we are praying that God works. It is because we are praying that God works. God works through the agency of prayer. When we recognize that prayer is God’s work, and recognize that until we learn to pray we shall do no work, which is God’s work, then we will be determined to pray.

Prayer as warfare – Ephesians 6:10-12 says: Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rules, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. The battle is in the spiritual realm and that takes the battle to the prayer “trench”. When we pray, we give God an upper hand on the battlefield. Satan has no defense against prayer. Prayer throws the battle to the Lord. The devil has no stomach for combat with God. Not Christian work, but Christian prayer, gets to the devil. Because of the vital nature of prayer in the fight against evil, we sometimes struggle maintaining a constant prayer life. Prayer is really the only pace we engage the devil. He may influence us and trouble us, but when we pray, we face him in “hand-to-hand” combat. The devil’s only hope is to stop the praying. When the praying stops, warfare stops and the devil acts unhindered to thwart the Kingdom’s work.

Prayer has been given to the church of the living God. The church (all saved, born-again believers) is the only force that is conflicting and combating Satan’s total rule in human affairs.
Prayer is worship and looks toward God. Without prayer there is no worship. Prayer is work and looks toward mankind as we work in mankind’s behalf. Without prayer there is no vital work “of” God in behalf of mankind. Prayer is warfare against the devil. Without prayer there is no warfare and thus no victory. Prayer does not win the victory. It is the means whereby an already-won victory is claimed and imposed over Satan here and now and forever.

I can pray and touch heaven, God and His throne. I can pray and touch earth, its circumstances, its occupants and its enterprises. I can pray and touch Satan, claiming and imposing a victory over him in the name of Jesus.

“Ere you left your room this morning, did you think to pray?” (The words of an old hymn.) Don’t give up praying; God is not finished with us yet!

Discovering Seadrift…

As I continued to read the newspaper Dorothy Geraldine Wilson had given me, Seadrift Success, I was caught off guard… I don’t know if you out there believe that history repeats itself, but as I read more and more articles, it seemed to be this way.  Geo L. Rhea, the Success editor began the publication on September 16, 1911, just about a century ago.

Yet, one of the first articles I read said, “There are said to be over 5,000,000 able-bodied jobless men in this country today, who are anxious to work, but can not find employment. There is a cause and there is a remedy for this unfortunate state of affairs, but it will take men of brain, men of nerve and men of initiative to remove the cause.” This short article was published in a newspaper from May 1915, today, March 2011 there are about 13.5 million unemployed persons, I guess not much has changed… and the cause has yet to be removed.

Any yet another issue of today, famine:
Seven Million Need Food
Hordes in sorry plight in war ridden Europe.
London. May 1, 1915. – Seven million people, of whom two million are Jews, are in dire need of food. This statement was made today by Hermann Laundau, a Jewish philanthropist associated with various Jewish charities of London. “Of these 5,500,000 are east of the Vistula River and 1,500,000 west of the river.” Mr. Laundau said. “The Jews are even poorer than the Gentiles because of the boycott against the Jews in parts of Poland before the beginning of the war, which impoverished, thousands who otherwise would have been able to provide for their families.” I suppose world hunger will never been resolved, neither by action, nor by prayer and no matter how many Miss Universes wish for it.
It goes to show you that we probably won’t be orbiting around in space cars anytime soon if we can’t resolve the issues of a century past. I remember when I was younger, people would describe the year 2000, the new millennium as if we would be like The Jetsons. Don’t get me wrong, technology has brought us into a completely different era, but the headlines in Seadrift Success have proven that we are very much our ancestors.

And on a lighter note and in my neck of the woods; advertising and marketing:
The Latest Greatest and Up-to-Datest
System of advertising adopted by the enterprising business management of the well known establishment of P. H. Kurtz has certainly caused wide commitment and considerable furore among the buying public of this section.

When Mr. Kurtz first announced that he would give away absolutely free the beautiful $400 Claxton Parlor Grand Piano which is upon exhibition in his store, much curiosity was aroused as to how he could afford, from a business standpoint, to do such a thing, but when it was learned that he would give one piano vote with every cent paid for any article in his store; also that the piano was to be given absolutely free to the person presenting the greatest number of these piano votes it looked like an extremely novel and most liberal advertising method. The earnestness with which our buying public have been “going after” these piano votes more than makes good our prophecy that it would be a “merry strife.” This novel advertising campaign, the ever increasing crowds, the many splendid values which he is offering daily has made his name a household name and a mecca for the bargain lovers of this community. He is to be congratulated upon the thoroughness of his business foresight and the citizens of Seadrift should feel that they have all reason to be proud of the fact of having an establishment conducted upon such liberal and true business principals within our gates.

And in light of the upcoming city official elections, a word of advice from Editor Geo L. Rhea from a May 2, 1914 issue:
Let’s All Get Together
Now that the election is over and it is settled who are to be our city officials for the coming year, the Success wishes to take this opportunity of congratulating the successful candidates and trusts that their administration of the city affairs will be met with every success.

It has always been the boast of the American citizen that he was “an awful good fighter” before the election and “an awful good loser afterwards.” Let us bury all past rancors therefore and let everyone put his shoulder to the wheel for the purpose of boosting the welfare and prosperity of Seadrift in every possible way. Let all of us give the incoming administration our ungrudging and hearty support and prove the truth of the old adage that “the harder they fought, the better friends they became after the fight was over.”

Twenty-six MUD customers used the large Waste Management containers on Saturday, March 12. There were two containers available, but one would have been sufficient. The next date to have a container available for dumping will be Friday, June 10th, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the MUD site on 16th St. and Harrison.
