Due to circumstances beyond our control, the ice days in Fort Bend County last week, forced Katy ISD to cancel this event to allow their students and  teachers to make up the lost days by attending class on the 18th and 19th.  UH-Sugar Land has very graciously agreed to allow us the use of their campus.  If you have previously provided this information to your membership, we would greatly appreciate if you could also provide them with this updated information.

NEW LOCATION:  14000 University BLVD, inside the Brazos Building

Warrior’s Weekend Expands Its Outreach

Local volunteers needed…
Cold weather didn’t stop the Warrior’s Weekend Directors from driving to Port O’Connor the evening of February 4 to meet with locals who expressed their willingness to help out at this year’s May 21 event. As President Ron Kocian explained, “There is not a day that goes by that we don’t do something towards the planning and execution of our mission.”

And what is Warrrior’s Weekend’s mission? It is to put into action that popular phrase, “We support our troops”.

In addition to the much-anticipated “Warrior’s Weekend” event where wounded troops are treated to a day of fishing and a catered meal in Port O’Connor, the Warrior’s Weekend organization has expanded its outreach to include purchasing equipment to increase the mobility of veterans at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), financing an internet cafe for the Victoria National Guard, hosting fish frys for the past three years at BAMC, funding a Veterans Appreciation Luncheon in Victoria for local veterans, donating $5,000 towards building a home for a double amputee veteran in Victoria, supplying funds to several KIA (Killed in Action) families, plus donating to several other veterans causes.

A lot of money and a lot of help is needed to continue this mission. The goal this year is to host 300 wounded soldiers, plus caretakers, to a wonderful day of fishing, camaraderie, and good food – a day when these heroes can experience a real break from their day-to-day treatments and therapy at the military hospital, and more importantly – a time when they can see how much we regular citizens appreciate and care about them.

“Since most of these guys just can’t get enough fishing, we are looking not only for people to volunteer to take them out on their boats, but also for those who will assist them in fishing on the piers,” Ron said.  Two local couples at the meeting responded that they would be happy to assist. Reese Hunley was designated Chairman of the pier fishing committee, and he will be looking for other volunteers to help.

There are lots of ways, both big and small, that local citizens can help Warrior’s Weekend to show appreciation to our wounded heroes. In addition to boats and fishing assistance, lodging is needed for out-of-towners who come here to assist, such as those who build the beautiful sandcastle each year. There is decorating to do, transportation to provide, cookies to bake, and much, much more.

And, most of all, please plan to be out that day, greeting these deserving veterans and letting them know how honored you are that they have come here to visit us.

-Planning in underway and raffle items are now being solicited for “Warrior’s Weekend Muster”, a major fund raiser planned for April 1.

Port Lavaca- Calhoun County Independent School District (CCISD) has received $35,000 from The Dow Chemical Company Foundation to create a community recycling and environmental education facility to be named “The Dow Sustainability Center of Calhoun County.”

The contribution from Dow is being made in honor of the International Year of Chemistry, a United Nations initiative of which Dow is a major sponsor.

“Every day, chemistry helps us solve world-wide issues in areas such as medicine, food, clean drinking water and energy,” said Dow Seadrift Operations Site Leader Brad Fedorchak. “We also see it being used locally through initiatives like recycling and that’s why we are so pleased to be partnering with Calhoun County ISD and Partners in Education to bring this new facility to our schools and community.“

The Dow Sustainability Center of Calhoun County will be located on Ash Street, behind HJM Elementary, near the Victoria College – Calhoun Center campus and will be used by both CCISD and the community.  Plans are underway to install a 10-bin recycling trailer for newspaper, cans, plastic and more.  Educational exhibits and hands-on activities are also being developed to enhance student and community knowledge about local industries and how their products are used in our everyday lives.

Fedorchak says the project was a natural fit with Dow’s efforts to include the community in the company’s commitment to long-term resource management and a healthy environment.

“We believe that, in partnership with our schools and our neighborhoods, we have the opportunity to make our communities even better places to live and work by making it easier for students and families to recycle,” said Fedorchak. “As people learn about the benefits of recycling, I’m sure it will grow and make our communities more sustainable now, and in the future.”

CCISD Science Coordinator Robin Sonsel says having access to these kinds of resources will enhance learning by providing students with real-life activities to reinforce classroom learning.

“Our students can take educational field trips to learn about and participate in recycling.  The community can also recycle their household items at the trailer, leading to more environmentally-aware citizens,” said CCISD Science Coordinator Robin Sonsel.

Sonsel also stated that in addition to the trailer, an indoor display area is also being planned in one of the nearby classrooms.  “The displays will enable students and our community to see what our local chemical plants produce.  The raw matter, to the finished product, to the recycling bin and then how the process starts over is what will be on display,” explained Sonsel.  “Students and those in the community will understand the process when we can show them the cycle of the recycled product,” he added.

The Dow Sustainability Center will also include partnerships with the City of Port Lavaca, Calhoun County, Keep Calhoun County Beautiful, CCISD, ALCOA and Formosa, and many others.

“This will be everyone’s facility and we are proud to provide this contribution to get it started,” said Fedorchak. “I am looking forward to seeing it put to good use by our students, schools and community members.”

The Center is expected to open in time for the start of the 2011-2012 school year.
