Planning Begins for Project Graduation

This year’s Project Graduation will be held at Calhoun High School on June 3, 2011. Project Graduation is a safe alternative for seniors to celebrate their High School Graduation. It includes many memorable activities and entertainment for the kids throughout the night and a chance for that last visit with their classmates. Too often the future of young lives and the happiness of special events have been spoiled by the tragedy of drinking and driving. Functions like this give seniors a controlled environment off the roads to carry on with the celebration of their graduation ceremony.

Public funds are not available for Project Graduation; therefore the full amount must be raised from the public and private sectors.

Help is needed in the form of cash donations, merchandise and gift certificates, and food and beverages. To find out how you can help, please call: Kellie Whittaker at (361) 228-2257; Grace Gonzales at (361) 676-3207; or Dawna Meeks at (361) 746-4758.

Final preparations are being made for this year’s SWEETHEART BANQUET which will be held Thursday, February 10, at 6:30 p.m. in the Port O’Connor Community Center. Each year we have a very busy Church Fellowship Committee purchasing decorations, paper goods for the meal, food, selecting entertainment, and printing tickets and programs. The Committee is making arrangements to charcoal broil the steaks the day of the banquet. Gifts have been purchased for the door prizes and for the couple married the longest and shortest time.

Ticket sales have been very good and some ticket sellers have sold all of their allotted tickets. We can only sell 200 tickets because of space limitations. Tickets are $7.00 each for this gala affair, which includes a charcoal-broiled rib eye steak with all the trimmings, salad, dessert, ice tea and coffee.  Door prizes will be awarded and the “Port O’Connor Citizen of the Year” award will be presented. Entertainment will be by John Sisk and his music and auctioneering antics. Everyone is guaranteed a thrilling and exuberating evening of entertainment and a fantastic seated dinner. You should get your tickets before they are all gone.

Tickets are available from the following: Pat Ekstrom, 983-2030; Pat Turk, 983-4343; Brenda Smith, 983-2272; Debbie Michalek, 983-2508; Evelyn Lewis, 983-4216; Mary Nell McGee, 983-2837.
See you in church Sunday!

Port O’Connor Team Perpetual Motion is getting geared up once again for our annual Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society’s nationwide signature event.  Relay for Life raises money for cancer research and American Cancer Society programs in our area.

This year Relay will be on Friday, April 1, 2011 at the fairgrounds in Port Lavaca, Texas.  It is a fun filled overnight event to celebrate those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and empower individuals and communities to fight back against a disease that takes so much.

This year teams can be as large as we want, we aren’t limited to the number of people on a team.  Never been on a team? Then come and join us and experience the great feeling you get from opening ceremonies, kids laps, survivor laps and everyone participating.

Our team is starting our fund raisers for this event. They include bake sales, a raffle and T-shirt sales just for a start.  As always there will be luminarias available to purchase.  Luminaria are bags (which house a small candle) that are decorated and line the track.  The candles are lit at dark and they light our path as we walk.

If you would like to buy a luminaria, raffle ticket or just make a donation stop by POC Hardware and talk to Judith or Wanda.  Come join us, be on our team and be a part of this wonderful event.  We would love to have you join us and help us make a difference.  Please come see us or call, the sooner the better !!!

Life’s Concerns By Marcos Gohlke

What is the most serious concern you have for your life?  Are you concerned about your health? Are you concerned about your finances? Are you concerned about your family?
An Angel says, “Never borrow from the future. If you worry about what may happen tomorrow and it doesn’t happen, you have worried in vain. Even if it does happen, you have to worry twice.”

A few suggestions follow that can help us with our life’s concerns:
1.  Pray.
2.  Go to bed on time.
3.  Get up on time so you can start the day unrushed.
4.  Say NO to projects that won’t fit into your time schedule or that will compromise your mental health.
5.  Delegate tasks to others.
6.  Simplify and un-clutter your life.
7.  Less is more. (Although one is often not enough, two are often too many.)
8.  Pace yourself. Spread out big changes and difficult projects over time. Don’t lump the hard things all together.
9.  Take one day at a time.
10.  Separate worries from concerns. If a situation is a concern, find out what God would have you do and let go of anxiety. If you can’t do anything about a situation, forget it.
11.  Live within your budget; don’t use credit cards for ordinary purchases.
12.  Allow extra time to do things and to get places.
13.  Have backups; an extra car key in your wallet, an extra house key buried in the garden, extra tamps, etc.
14.  K.M.S. (Keep Mouth Shut.) This single piece of advice can prevent an enormous amount of trouble.
15.  Do something for the Kid in You every day.
16.  Carry a spiritually enlightening book with you to read while waiting in line.
17.  Get enough rest.
18.  Eat right.
19.  Get organized so everything has its place.
20.  While driving, listen to a tape or CD that can help improve your quality of life.
21.  Write down thoughts and inspirations.
22.  Every day, find time to be alone.
23.  Having problems? Talk to God on the spot. Try to nip small problems in the bud. Don’t wait until it’s time to go to bed to try and pray.
24.  Make friends with God’s people.
25.  Keep a folder of favorite Scriptures on hand.
26. Remember that the shortest bridge between despair and hope is often a good “Thank you, Jesus”.
27.  Laugh.
28.  Laugh some more!
29.  Take your work seriously, but not yourself at all.
30.  Develop a forgiving attitude. (Most people are doing the best they can.)
31.  Be kind to unkind people. (They probably need it the most.)
32.  Sit on your ego.
33.  Talk less; listen more.
34.  Slow down.
35.  Remind yourself that you are not the general manager of the universe.
36.  Every night before bed, think of one thing you’re grateful for that you’ve never been grateful for before.

GOD HAS A WAY OF TURNING THINGS AROUND FOR YOU.

Romans 8:31 says, “What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God be for us, who can be against us?
