Randy-HudsonRandy Noel Hudson, a longtime resident of La Porte who had retired to Port O’Connor, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Saturday evening, Oct. 1, after a brief illness.

Randy, a beloved husband, father and grandfather, was friends with virtually every person he met, and he had a particular passion for his family, fishing, shrimping and hunting – and his two granddaughters.
He was born September 5, 1959 in Pasadena and spent most of his youth in Port O’Connor. After retirement from his 30-year career at Lyondell in La Porte, he returned to Port O’Connor, where he operated the Fishing Center. He and his wife Patty had recently completed construction of their retirement home in Port O’Connor.

Randy was particularly involved in youth sports with his kids, where his daughter Brooke played softball for La Porte High School and later Boston University; and where his son Travis played both football and baseball at LPHS, and later at CalhounHigh School in Port Lavaca. Randy rarely missed a game.

Preceded in death by his parents Mary Jo and James Hudson, Randy is survived by a truly loving family, including his wife Patty; daughter Brooke Hudson Naghavi and husband Shahin and their daughters Averie and Ariana; and son Travis and his girlfriend Cassie Lawrence.

Also surviving are sister Cheryl and her husband Tom Nowlin and their daughter Misty and her husband Chris as well as sons Jake and Mason; brother Keith Hudson and his wife Yvonne; and sister Cindy and her husband Grant Lee and their family, including Clay Voss and his wife Lauren, Kayla Taylor and her husband Chase, and daughter Brooke.

Also playing important roles in Randy’s life over the years are Patty’s parents, Glenn and Judy Miller, and Patty’s brother and sisters, including Patty’s sister Sharon and her husband Tim Miller; brother Harold Miller and his wife Vivian and their daughter and son-in-law Michelle and Sean Kennedy; brother Ronnie Miller and his wife Sheila and their son Jacob; and sister Victoria Heidaker and her husband Mark and their son Logan and daughter Kyla.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, October 6th at King Fisher Beach, followed by his burial at the Port O’Connor Cemetery.

On Saturday, September 17, 2022, 15 volunteers came down to King Fisher Beach in Port O’Connor to participate in the fall Adopt-a-Brach cleanup from 9 a.m. to noon. Four children & ten adults collected 12 bags worth of trash, estimated at about 85 pounds, including some heavy metal wire and pipes.

Items of concern include an 8-Volt battery, hundreds of cigarette butts and plastic bottle caps, and many candy wrappers.

Thankfully, members of our community help to keep the beach clean throughout the year. I am especially thankful for those who provide the buckets near the pier and the beach goers who clean their areas before they leave. Of course, we are always appreciative of the county employees who do a great job!

If you are interested, we also have a spring Adopt-a-Beach cleanup in mid-April. Other Calhoun County locations include Boggy Nature Park and Magnolia Beach. Or, if you clean up beaches/waterways on your own time, you can report your data on the Clean Swell app.

San Antonio Bay Partnership is hosting local cleanups by kayak on September 27 and Oct. 1.

Group of hardworking beach cleanup volunteers: Chris Kram, Honey Doan, Terri Schmidt, Pam & Blain McNally - includes friends from New Braunfels and Sugarland who come to stay with Katy/PO’C homeowners. They collected an estimated 75 pounds of trash including some metal pipes and wire.

The latest fundraiser benefiting the POC Community Center Facelift Project was held on Saturday, October 8, on the grounds of the Center. It was the first annual Clay Shoot hosted by the POC Community Service Club. Thirteen four-man teams plus two individuals competed for prizes. A list of all the winners is included in the Service Club article. It was a beautiful day and a very successful event for our Facelift Project. We are a long way from our goal of $150,000.00 for Phase I, but we are slowly gaining ground. Phase I will begin with the Pavilion. The kitchen area will be upgraded, the restrooms will be painted and refloored, paint and repair roof and replace tables and chairs. As more money is raised, the restrooms will be enlarged and more stalls added to both. Once the work on the pavilion is finished, the work on the main building will be started as funds become available.

A large replica of a thermometer will be erected on the center grounds near the highway, showing the progress of the fundraising. Watch the red line rise as collections grow!

Plans are already underway for the next fundraiser. Jose’s Mexican Restaurant has generously agreed to donate the proceeds from the Turkey Cook-off on November19, to the Facelift Project. There will be delicious food, raffles, a corn hole tournament and much more! Next time you are enjoying a delicious meal at Josie’s, be sure and thank them for their support of this project. We appreciate all that they do for the community.

There are other fund raisers in the planning stages. We so appreciate the community support this project is receiving. Thank you so much to everyone who is helping to make this dream come true.

Thank you to all who donated to the First Annual Clay Shoot!
