President Harry Truman, along with the U.S. Congress, instituted a National Day of Prayer. That was on April 17, 1952. Its purpose was that “all of us, in our churches, in our homes, and in our hearts, may beseech God to grant us wisdom to know the course which we should follow, and strength and patience to pursue that course steadfastly.” President Truman also added, “May we also give thanks to Him for His constant watchfulness over us in every hour of national prosperity and national peril.” The date of its observance is the first Thursday of May.

Chantal Marie Theodore Hawes, 84, of Port O’Connor, passed away on April 24, 2022 in Port O’Connor, with her family by her side.  Chantal was born in Dreux, France to Fernand and Marie Louise Pichot Theodore on October 12, 1937.

Chantal became a citizen of the United States of America in 1969.  She was active in her community of Port O’Connor, was an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and owned and operated Chantal Boutique Resale Shop for 26 years, which was affectionately known as a “Little Walmart”.   She gave generously from her shop to those in need, and often gave to The Gabriel Project as well.  Chantal loved her family and friends and never met a stranger.  She will be missed by all who loved her.

In addition to her parents; Fernand George and Marie Louise Pichot Theodore, she is preceded in death by daughter; Nancy Harborth, sisters; Jocelyn Theodore, Nadine Theodore, and Charline Theodore, and brother; Jacky Theodore.

Chantal is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Alfred W. “Freddie” Hawes, Jr., sons; Timmy Amundson, Alfred W. “Walker” Hawes, III, Sean Hawes, and Michael M. Hawes, daughters; Stephanie Holt and Lisa Goode, sisters; Josselyne Couturier, Viviane Germaine, and Armelle L’enfant, sister-in-law; Christiane Theodore, seventeen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many other family and friends, all of whom will cherish her memory.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, April 30, 2022 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Port O’Connor with the Father Tommy Chen officiating.   Burial followed at Port O’Connor Cemetery.

Honoring her by serving as Pallbearers were her grandson; Sammy Holt, and brothers-in-law Leslie Hawes, Paul Hawes, Mark Hawes, Forrest Hawes, and Teddy Hawes.  Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be friends; Ralph Weathersby and Jerome Preslar, sons; Timmy Amundson, Alfred W. “Walker” Hawes, III, Sean Hawes, and Michael M. Hawes, brothers-in-law; Michael E. Hawes, Danny Bourg, John Stevenson, Blue Deckert, and John Hersey, and son-in-law; Freddie Harborth.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, P.O. Box 345, Port O’Connor, Texas 77982 or The Gabriel Project, P.O. Box 345 Victoria, Texas 77902.

Nancy Gilliam, age 70 of Goodman went to be with the Lord on May 2, 2022, surrounded by the comfort of her loving husband. Nancy was born in Philadelphia, PA on March 1, 1952 to the late Mary Kelley and Samuel Gaffin.

She worked many years as a CNA in nursing homes and also at at Raby’s Seafood in Port O’Connor, Texas. She loved to collect memorabilia from different states. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother, Dennis Gaffin (wife Nancy), and a step-daughter Gina Redmond.

Survivors are her husband Gary Gilliam; three brothers Frank Gaffin and wife Polly of Warminister, PA, Dan Gaffin and wife Cindy of Ocala, FL, and Carl Gaffin of New Jersey; one son Robert Heiser Jr of Mount Carmel, PA; one stepson Tom Gilliam and wife Stacy of Joplin; four daughters Nancy Denmon of Texas, Mary Heiser and husband Earl of Tower City, PA, Angela Lewis and husband Corby of Auburn, PA, and Karen Bowers and husband Jon of Sevens Valley, PA; along with nineteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, all of whom loved her very much.

Graveside services were held at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. The family encourages relatives and friends to visit www.simpsonfh.com to share memories of Nancy.
