Thank you to Commissioner Gary Reese and his employees for restoring the entry into the little jetties and the sidewalk updates at the Kingfisher Beach Pavilion. The sidewalk enhancements allowed us to install a mobility mat. The mat will allow persons with disabilities or parents with strollers to access the beach and the water. Now someone can get out of their car and use the sidewalks down to the pavilion and out the other side to access the mat. We are very proud to make our beach more compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The mat is for everyone to use so enjoy!!

We held our membership appreciation casino party on Friday March 11th. We had a great turnout, and everyone seemed to enjoy the casino games and prizes. The Chamber Board of Directors is pleased to serve the membership and the community. Now is the time to renew or join the chamber. Membership applications can be found on our webpage at www.portoconnorchamber.com.

Remember the Farmers Market is the second Saturday of the month from 8:00-12:00 at the Kingfisher Beach Pavilion. Come support your neighbors as they sell homemade or homegrown products.

Make plans to attend the 10th Annual Crawfish Festival on April 30, 2022. We will have cold beer, crawfish plates, music, and the opportunity to taste crawfish prepared by the cook off teams.

We are grateful for our new and renewing members: Jo Beth’s Creations, Capt. TPWD Game Warden Guevara with Calhoun County Boater Education Class

TPWD Game Warden Guevara with
Calhoun County Boater Education Class

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension / Texas Sea Grant Boater Education Class took place on February 26, 2022 at the Calhoun County Fairgrounds. Due to the cold, misty weather some of the activities had to be moved into the livestock barn.
Students learned about and practiced using fire extinguishers with the Port Lavaca Fire Department. Then they got fitted for life jackets and learned about other personal floatation devices from USCG Auxiliary 7-10.

After having a delicious lunch that was sponsored by Coastal Bend Marine, they were trained by TPWD Game Warden Guevara. She went over boat safety tips and had the students practice using and reconnecting a kill switch.

Finally, a crew from USCG Station Port O’Connor came in with one of their boats to go over all of the required safety gear that is supposed to be on a vessel.
Then the crew members from Station Port O’Connor demonstrated how to set off a flare so the students would know what to do if they were ever in a situation where they needed to deploy a visual distress signal.

I want to thank all of the agencies involved in this program. The students benefited from all of the hands-on learning activities that would not have been possible without your assistance.
