The Friends of the Port O’ Connor Library hosted an interesting and informative program titled “The Magic Of Chester Island” at the POC Library on October 4, 2021.
Presenters were Audubon Texas Wardens, Tim and Peggy Wilkinson. Peggy is the granddaughter of Chester Smith, a longtime resident of POC, and a dedicated Conservationist, and Warden of the dredge island in Matagorda Bay, commonly known as Bird Island.
To honor Chester Smith, the island has been officially named “Chester Island” to honor him. Chester Smith’s tireless dedication, and many years of hard work, helped preserve the island’s integrity, and, thus, protect the many species of birds and other wildlife that have inhabited the island for decades.
Also present at the program were Chester Smith’s granddaughter, Victoria Behrens, her husband, Mark Behrens, and her children (Chester Smith’s great-grandchildren) Lane and Kynlee Behrens. All who attended enjoyed the presentation immensely!!

To Honor the Fallen

Seadrift’s bayfront has a memorial to honor the thirteen servicemen and servicewomen who lost their lives in service for their country. They will not be forgotten because people like Robert Bryant and the Seadrift City Crew will be reminding us of the sacrifice that was given on behalf of America and its fight for freedom. Please feel free to drive down Seadrift’s Bay Avenue and view this incredible memorial to our fallen soldiers.
Robert Bryant has been flying flags along highway 185 going into Seadrift for fifteen years to honor our veterans and our fallen.

Tropical Storm Nicholas Hits

Many folks like myself weren’t expecting much to come out of Tropical Storm Nicholas, but we were mistaken. With winds as high as 81 mph, lots of trees, roofs, and fences were damaged or destroyed.
The photo above shows my fish dock cover resting against a tree just in front of the porch of my house (Dolphin Talk office).
Thanks to the efforts of Robert Mayo and Jacob Lucey it was unable to complete its journey into my house.

Working the Water

Chris Ingram (right) and Kyle Nevarez.
If you’re a shrimper, you’d be looking for some cooler weather. The brownie shrimp season was a good one, but the white shrimp season hasn’t been going well. The cooler weather, says Chris Ingram could really help shrimpers catch more shrimp right now. Kyle Nevarez, agrees. Both men have worked the water for some time…Kyle, for about forty years, and Chris, for about thirty-five years.
Our hats off to those who work the water. Both Seadrift and Port O’Connor have seen over the years men and women making a living from the water. They are our heroes! And that’s a fact!
