Letter to the Editor:

We, the Chapel Congregation, sincerely appreciate the many who give constantly and often to our “Pantry” ministry. From the pantry, we provide much needed assistance to many families in our community. As you provide, we are able to supply families with canned goods, staples, and often frozen meats. With all the problems the “virus” has given us, you have brought even more foods that we have passed along.

We are committed to being a beacon for the needy of our community. We will provide whatever is donated in the spirit of Christ, Who said, “Freely you have received, freely give!”
Blessings to you who are faithful to help!

Pastor Joane McDonough

The Dolphin welcomes letters from our readers on any subject that is of general interest to our audience. Letters should be 300 words or less (exception at the Dolphin’s discretion). Letters reflect the opinion of the writer, and not that of Dolphin Talk staff, and we retain the right to determine suitability for publication. It is the policy of this newspaper to promote area interests; therefore, complaints against local businesses should be directed elsewhere. Letters must be signed and include day and evening phone numbers, which will not be published. Your name will be withheld upon request, but anonymous material will not be considered for publication.

A House of Prayer by Tanya DeForest

House-of-Prayer-Photo
Located In Seadrift right off Highway 185 as you come into town, the House of Prayer began in 2007 as a ministry of the New Beginnings Assembly of God Church of Port Lavaca. Its first administrator was Evelyn Williams who served there for nine years. Alongside Evelyn there were other ladies who volunteered their time as well. Hearts were touched and families were supplied with basic needs of clothing and household goods. Food, also, was given away when it was available. Prayer and counseling were available for those who requested it.

Today Sallie Dean serves as its administrator. That happened in 2016. Alongside her are Marissa Cobb, Jessica Harris, and Angie Castillo. In above photo are (left to right) Marissa, Sallie, and Jessica in front of the House of Prayer.

Sallie came to the House of Prayer in need of clothes for a women’s retreat. What started as a need ended with her being a volunteer, and later, as the administrator. Her son, Robert, came and led a recovery program and a Bible Study from 2015 to 2018.

Marissa Cobb’s motto is “doing it for the Lord!” She enjoys coming to the House of Prayer because of her connection to Sallie Dean. Sallie is her aunt. The House of Prayer was closed for almost a year during Covid. Marissa, as well as Jessica, were there at the end of Covid to help get the House of Prayer started up again. It took at least three or four weeks of sorting, sanitizing, and cleaning up.

Jessica Harris came to Seadrift in 2013. She and her daughter Penelope came on a greyhound bus with a few of their belongings from Ohio. The House of Prayer proved invaluable in helping get them on their feet, and not only that, but Jessica and Penelope found a church and met Christian friends.

Pictured separately is Angie Castillo, another House of Prayer volunteer. Angie has precious memories of seeing mothers getting clothes for their babies and children getting toys. She saw a lot of women come to get prayer.

Sallie Dean will be having open heart-surgery this September. She would appreciate people’s thoughts and prayers.

The House of Prayer is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Prayer is available twenty-four seven by calling Sallie Dean at 361-564-8378, or people can come to the House of Prayer when it’s open.

Donations are accepted when someone is there at the House of Prayer. Sallie Dean asks that people not leave anything outside the House of Prayer if no one is there, but if you need to get rid of anything immediately, please call Sally and she will assist you.

Sally agrees that the House of Prayer has been the hands and feet of Jesus, and she adds that it’s “all in the middle of His heart!”
