Seadrift Police Chief, Leonard Bermea, (pictured) is proud to note that he and two of his officers, Louis Warren and Mike Henry, were invited by the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department to provide security for the presidential route. They, along with 2500 police officers from across the nation, were invited as well.

Also serving from Calhoun County were Lt. Joe Garcia, Deputy Robert Montero, Constable David Thomas, K-9 Officer Dakota Smith, Deputy Wesley McKely, and Investigator James Taylor.

• The Chamber signed a letter of support, for grant funding, to be used for the Phase 2 Boggy Nature Park. Allen Berger, Chairman of the Calhoun County Parks Board, gave a presentation on the key concepts included in Phase 2 project, to the Chamber Board of Directors at the January meeting.

• We have received a Metal Silhouette, of a fighter jet, and are in the process of having it erected on property adjacent to the Community Center. This is replica of the planes that flew when there was an Air Force Base on Matagorda Island. The base was first built in 1942 and in use from 1942 to 1945, then from 1949 to 1975. It now belongs to the Department of the Interior as a federal wildlife refuge. It is a great historical site and we encourage you to visit the island while you are in the Port O’ Connor area.

• The Annual Crawfish Festival is currently scheduled for April 24th. Please visit the chamber webpage to download vendor, cooker and sponsorship forms. If you have any questions, please email crawfish@portoconnorchamber.com

• The Port O’ Connor Farmers Market is held the second Saturday of each month at the Kingfisher Beach Pavilion from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. Our local artists, craftsman, cookers, and jelly makers continue to make this event a success. The Port O’ Connor Service Club is a loyal vendor each month and has delicious fresh fruit and produce. It is hard to believe that twenty-five years ago, three ladies, Margaret Jennings, Charlotte Graham and our very own Joyce Ryme came to the Chamber of Commerce seeking opinions about printing a local newspaper in Port O’ Connor. As many of you remember the only way to “get the word out” was by word of mouth or looking at the bulletin boards throughout town. These ladies made this a reality through hard work and dedication and we still enjoy a free publication each month. Please join us with a big thank you to Joyce for her service and wish her and the Dolphin Talk a Happy 25th Anniversary.

Tuesday night, February 2nd, was award night for Seadrift’s Solid Waste Department. Ranier Brigham, on the left, did the honors of awarding Terry Maddux, the Solid Waste Department Director, the award for his leadership and service for the department. Terry’s crew, Draven Adame and Josh Jeter, who were unable to be present, were awarded as well for their service. -Tanya DeForest

The ladies of the POC Community Service Club have been as busy as beavers with their meetings, “Valentine Gift Sale” & Booth at the Farmer’s Market, and planning and preparing for their “Spaghetti Supper” in March, and their “Spring Mega Garage Sale” in April. In addition to funding numerous projects that benefit the POC Community, the Club is also busy raising funds to erect a metal building behind the Calhoun County Pavilion, which is desperately needed to store items donated for their biannual Garage Sales, secure their equipment and essential items, and to provide a place to hold their bimonthly meetings.

The dates of the Club’s next fundraisers are:

1. A “Drive By Spaghetti Supper” and “Bake Sale” on Friday March 12, 2021 5:00PM until sold out, at the POC Community Center.

2. Their Booth selling a huge variety of items at the Farmer’s Market on Saturday, March 13, 2021 8:00 AM-12:00 Noon at the Front Beach Pavilion.

3. Their “Spring Mega Garage Sale” on Saturday, April 17, 2021, 8:00AM-12:00 Noon at the POC Community Center.

The Club continues to accept, and appreciate, your generous contributions of gently used household, decorative, and kitchen items; small appliances; clothing; shoes; toys; children’s and baby items; etc. We cannot accept computers, electronics, mattresses, or furniture.
