The second half of January was middle-of-the-road with decent catches of fish and average straps of ducks. Milder weather dominated the days making me think we will have an early Spring and maybe a rainy warmer February. Blistering cold blasts have been rare lately which is a welcome change from a few years past. Personally as I age I prefer the warmer temps and as one customer put it the other day ‘folks don’t move North when they retire’. It’s been more like Florida weather around here lately rather than middle coast of Texas. I’ll take it!

The guys fishing are experiencing good catches of both the bottom feeders (red-fish and drum) and the middle feeders (speckled trout). What makes a fish a pre-dominant bottom or middle feeder you may ask? Look at the location of their mouths from a side view of their heads and you will notice the obvious. Sure red-fish bomb baits on top and will smash your topwater lures come March but mostly they graze like a cow, the latter is the same for the black drum. Trout on the other hand with their middle headed (if you will) mouth location enjoy more of a full water column entirely. Just a tidbit I learned when I was eight years old from a nice gent teaching me to fish.

Wading lures have been the most fulfilling days on the water for yours truly. This is my favorite time of the year out in the water sliding my wade boots across the soft mud searching for that one thump on a suspending soft lure giving you no doubt a big girl has been tricked! Such fun! True too the bait guys are doing well catching redfish and drum using dead shrimp and crab and this will continue with the cooler waters until things warm up again with the tilting of the earth as we move to Spring. Live shrimp will then dominate our bait fishing outings as the trout

come alive over deeper structure chasing the shrimp which will be in abundance. I’m getting excited already for the end of February and those days where you think to yourself it’s already feeling like April around here with this warm sun! Get ready because once you read this edition of the Saltwater Angler Magazine it will be time for action.

Grab the family and gear and come down to spend a day or two with us. We still have some February special pricing to kick off the year and there are plenty of dates in March and beyond, all we are missing is your name filled in on the calendar!

Happenings at First Baptist Church by Diane Cooley

We are a month and a half into 2021 and still waiting for the COVID-19 virus to go away. We’ve masked, quarantined, cleaned every closet and drawer, finished our “to do” lists and spent lots of time with the dog! We’ve had so many rules piled on us; what we can do and can’t do, places we can’t go and people we can’t visit. First Baptist Church POC is the solution to your confusion!

Easter will soon be here (April 5) and the sunrise service will be held this year! That is exciting news, because last year it was canceled and it was looking very iffy for this year. If you have never been, there is nothing quite as awe inspiring as watching the sun rise over the bay while listening to a message on God’s word. This year, Pastor Miller will be preaching. That also means that the FBC Easter egg hunt is being held as well. Spread the word and plan to attend these two events that have become POC traditions.

Our pastor, Brother Phillip Miller and his wife Katrina have been in Port O’Connor since just before the pandemic began. What an introduction to our wonderful town. The good news is that our church has been growing through all this. People are accepting Christ and being baptized. There is excitement in our services every Sunday and Wednesday. If you would like to meet a group of giving, caring, unified, unselfish and Godly people, come join us. We are waiting to welcome you. For information on any of our services, call 361-983-2727. Services are also broadcast on Facebook at Port O’Connor First Baptist Church. We would love to have you with us any time.

The Chapel is moving forward in its work to reach this community for Christ! We have been provided many unique opportunities to serve the Lord Jesus.

We must admit to being “Full Gospel”, because we have had some great fellowship meals recently:

To honor Pastor Joane’s Birth MONTH, we enjoyed an All-Church Fellowship, a sandwich dinner, Mulligan stew, Taco Soup and a cook-out! We have enjoyed a Graduation Dinner in honor of Jessica Gonzales, who is completing a year-long rehabilitation program. It was good to see her and to congratulate her on the hard work she has put in to complete such a program. They have offered her the lead role in the house she is living in with the girls who are in the program. We are so proud of a home-town girl getting her life turned around and doing well!

We also celebrated Valentine’s Day with a meal. The church is providing it and we all are enjoying a great time together! Most of us realize it is not the meal as much as it i important that we just gather together.

We are hosting a winter retreat and we have gleaned fish from the Freeze Out Tournament. We have fed needy people from the pantry that has been so blessed by people of this community. We are celebrating birthdays and anniversaries, just looking for an opportunity to spend time together!

We will be traveling to Hallettsville on Saturday, March 6, for a great Men’s Breakfast. Anyone wishing to attend should call Pastor Erny so arrangements can be made. We will be leaving at 7:00 a.m.
Next month, March 19 through March 26, we will be hosting Captain Robert, who will be teaching the Sea Academy. Those interested in becoming a boat captain should contact Captain Robert at 361-758-6184.

We are having a group from Arkansas coming to Retreat here with us during March. The man came with another church group last year and enjoyed it so much that he is bringing his church men
.
Fisherman’s Chapel is an interdenominational congregation whose goal is to exalt the Name of our Lord and do His work on earth. We realize that His work is done individually, but corporately we can do so much more! One will always find a warm greeting here and all are urged to, “Come, grow with us”! We meet each Sunday for Bible Study at 10:00 a.m., Morning Service at 11:00 a.m., and Evening Service at 6:00 p.m. On Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. we gather for a midweek service.
