Fish Out Of Water by Thomas Spychalski…

October is here again and that means spooky tales of ghosts and goblins, witches and monsters, but like many things, it does not seem the same as when you were a kid.

I’m not exactly ‘old’ in modern times, having only  been on this Earth for forty-three years, but it is, of course, enough time for enough changes to take place to make one really feel nostalgic for what is beginning to be known to me as the ‘good old days.’

It used to be in my youth, kids would line the streets on the last day of October and, beyond the promise of free candy and the usual excitement for anything that broke the mundane status quo, there was a fascination there in seeing the other children dressed up as everything from the classic creeps of the night to princesses and robots, seeing the houses decked out in their best Halloween attire.

Now, even if it was not a year where regardless of your personal feelings on the matter we were not embroiled in a global pandemic, you hardly see the same amount of kids, due to designated trick or treating times or parents opting to do more ‘safe’ activities to celebrate the height of the Fall season.

It makes me sad, because being the age I am, I think it’s very possible I was the last generation of American children who got to experience a life where there were not as many limitations on how you played, ate, learned, and experienced your youth.

Not that it was all good, I mean, I once had a neighborhood bully crush two eggs into my hair after school on Halloween and once had some kid (who I still don’t know who it was) steal my treat bag right out of my space in the coat area, as they called it, but it seemed it was in a way a more realistic preparation for the teeter-todder of life then what people think is acceptable today.

I still recall, which I might have mentioned here before, an image that never leaves my head, of a kid barreling down the sidewalk riding his BMX bike one-handed, not because he thought it made him look ‘cool,’ as we used to, but because he was holding a smart phone in his free hand, making me shake my head that children today are so tied to technology that they don’t even go up to a hang out spot or knock on their friend’s door to see what they are doing anymore.

It’s not like I’m a Luddite, I grew up in the era where the microchip made great strides and still love what it has done for Humanity, however I do feel kids are missing out in a ‘playing in the mud’ purity that quickly fades about the time you hit high school.

Perhaps it is as said, that hitting middle age has me looking more forward than back, perhaps it is this year of ridiculous unrest and division, perhaps it is that no one grew out of the fun of experiencing childhood like we used to but rather than the shape of the world has changed around us and the children themselves, sometimes for the better, but at others, at the loss of lessons that cannot be replaced.

As their October “Book of The Month”, POC’s Book Club, “Hooked On Books”, chose The Nightingale by Kristen Hannah, a novel about the German Occupation of France during WWII. The Club held their meeting on October 13, 2020 at 2:00 PM at the home of Terri McGuire. To complement the setting, and emphasize the importance of the French Resistance during the War, the Hostesses: Terri McGuire, Charlotte Fitzgerald, Agnes Hannes, and Mary Nell McGee; chose a French theme, and held the meeting in the McGuire boat barn, because it resembled a “hideout”.

Guests were greeted at the front door by a Wine-Cork wreath, and postings of “Bonjour”, “Vive la France”, & “Le Menu” (in French). They entered the “hide-out” to French music, and found tables decorated with hot pink and black Eiffel Tower tablecloths, Eiffel tower centerpieces, and French phrases on the table tops. French words were also placed about. Guests were invited to add a “French touch” to their ensemble. (Beret, scarf at the throat, boa, etc.)

After the vote on Books for the Club’s 2021 season, Guests were treated to French tidbits wrapped with navy blue napkins “in the style of” a knapsack, and garnished with a fleur-de-lis. The “knapsacks” contained oer’douvres of croissants, olives, charcuterie of ham and cheese, a French tarte, a merengue cookie, and grapes, of course!!!! Drinks were Perrier, La Croix, and eau-water.

After the fine French Cuisine, Charlotte led a fun game of French words, utilizing the French phrases on the tables, ones that had been adapted into English, those in the book, and even a few German words!! Examples- Please R.S.V.P.-“oui o non”; “Merci”; and “Au revoir”. Terri then led an interesting study of the The Nightingale, using the personalities of the book’s characters, lessons learned, and how they still affect our lives today. All who attended enjoyed our “Afternoon in France”, and extended our compliments and appreciation to the Hostesses!! Merci Beaucoup!!

The Club’s next meeting will be held on November 10, 2020, at 2:00 PM, and our “Book of the Month” is “Trials of the Earth” by Mary Hamilton. If you would like to join “Hooked On Books”, please email your contact information to alanehaardt@yahoo.com. All are welcome!!

Saturday, October 10, was a big day for patriotism!

Port Lavaca had an incredible display of flag-waving patriots in an assortment of vehicles, a tractor, and horses! None other than County Judge Richard Meyer and County Sheriff Bobby Vickery led the parade on horseback! Our U.S. Representative Michael Cloud joined the parade as well!

Our thanks to Amy and David Mauer for bringing this parade together! Their desire was to ‘“give something positive to the community and show support to our first responders and our veterans.”

COME JOIN IN WHAT’S GOING ON IN YOUR COMMUNITY

I hope all are enjoying these beautiful Fall mornings we have been receiving. This community has been so blessed and spared so many issues in the past few years. Hurricane Harvey did not hit us head on, as it did Rockport and their area. I think with so many virus cases in other areas, we seemed to escape the worst of it.

Hurricane season is coming to a close and with the northers to push them away from us, hopefully we have survived another year from those, All seems good in Port O’Connor.

My goodness, I have received calls from so many newcomers saying, I just bought property in Port O’Connor, and asking about different issues, or saying I just moved here last week or even today, wanting information about our community.

It seems to me, with our growing population, people would be getting involved in what’s happening in the community. A few are, but not nearly enough, This community has always worked together; that is a key factor of what makes Port O’Connor what it is. This takes dedication and love of this place to keep its laid-back attitude and love for life attitude. People come to visit, see what a wonderful life we have and say “I like it here; I’m going to retire and move here.” But unless more people get involved, we are going to loose our piece of paradise.

The Chamber meets the 2nd Monday of each month -6:30 pm- Port O’Connor Community Center– Everyone Invited, Looking forward to meeting new comers,.Let’s all join together in keeping what we have.

A note of joy in this crazy 2020!
