We understand how hard our teachers have been working to educate our children, especially these past few weeks when they have not had the benefit of a physical classroom. We certainly appreciate their dedication and care for our children.

Congratulations go out to those who have been named Teachers of the Year and those who received the Dedication to Education Award in Calhoun County schools.
We were not able to get the names of all the recipients, but in our local area they are:

Monica Peters – Teacher of the Year at Port O’Connor School
Billie Derosio – Teacher of the Year at Seadrift School
Carol Rosenboom – Dedication to Education Award at Port O’Connor School
Margarita Rappelus – Dedication to Education Award at Seadrift School

new-fire-truck
POCVFD would like to say thank you to everyone who has donated and supported us. Through your donations and support we were able to purchase this multi purpose rescue truck. Once we finish setting everything up it will serve as a rescue truck with water that we can respond to wrecks and many other types of calls, with all of the equipment needed. What I believe to be the department’s favorite part about the truck is the built in cascade system. In the past when fighting house fires etc., once our air packs were empty we had to rely on other departments to refill them, or we had to take them to Port Lavaca to refill. With this truck we can new refill our own bottles. Not only does this help with fire fighting, it also helps us with training. Whereas before we were limited on the amount of training we could do due to the limited number of bottles we had and the possibility of needing them in the event of an emergency. Now we can train and become more proficient with their use. We just wanted to show the community what your support has allowed us to purchase. Thank you.

Spring Cleaning and Island Gardening Rehab

Greetings from the island everyone. I hope that you are all doing well and enjoyed a happy and beautiful day with your mom on Mother’s Day, whether in person or on a heavenly note. God blessed us with enduring and loving moms, and we all should feel so very blessed to have them. I love you, Mom.

Well, I have faith that the Covid crisis that has been endured over the past several months is becoming better, and the return to normalcy is upon us. In all honesty, given my solitary and off-grid lifestyle for over 14 years now, I have felt very minimal homesteading effect from all of this. Not being able to physically spend time with Mom, to hug her and hold her hand and take her places, THESE are the things that have hurt me and my family the very most these past few months. But this too shall pass, and I know that we will soon be able to spend physical time with her. Everyone please stay safe and healthy.

I’ve been trying to do some Spring cleaning, repairs and trash haul-off around the island house. It’s amazing the amount of junk/stuff that can be accumulated around a place. With the help of my future neighbors, Britton & Susan, (their place is gonna look great), the eight 25’+ palm trees in my yard, and one in their yard, have all been trimmed and look wonderful. Yay!! It had been nearly two years since they were trimmed, and they certainly needed it. I just try to do one cleanup and repair task at a time, burning what I can and hauling the larger metal items off. Slowly but surely.

My tomato plants are looking pretty good so far, I’m having to keep them watered at least several times a week since the island has had very little rainfall. And even though I love having the abundance of colorful migrating birds on the island this Spring, they sure are pecking the heck out of my tomatoes that are beginning to ripen. Research says that the birds are not actually wanting to eat the tomatoes, but instead are wanting the water out of them. So I’m gonna try setting up two bird baths, one at each main garden spot, in hopes that this helps the problem. I sure hope it does.

Another thing I’m in the process of preparing to do before next Spring planting season, is to rejuvenate all of my raised beds and containers’ soil. Up until a few years ago, I could rely on every Spring tons of sargassum (seaweed), washing ashore on the island beach. I would haul 15-20 baskets of the seaweed back to the house, rinse it off with fresh water, and then add other carbon and nitrogen materials to it and compost it down to add to all of my garden soil, making a wonderful organic fertilizer. But for the past four years, only a very small amount of seaweed has washed ashore, nowhere near the amount that I need. So now I’ve had to purchase several hundred pounds of dry and liquid kelp and fish meal, crab and lobster shell, composted chicken manure, worm castings (poop), fish bone meal and other assorted organic amendments to help rejuvenate the soil and bring back the needed nutrients. I call this endeavor my “stimulus money garden project”. It will all be worth it to grow that delicious 3+ pound tomato!

I’m also gonna build 10 additional raised bed frames 3’x3’x12” deep, and place them on top of my existing raised beds, giving me a full 20” of organic soil for the vegetable roots to grow. I’m thinking that this additional depth, along with the much improved soil additives and conditions, will make for great gardening.

Well that’s it from the island for now, everyone stay healthy and have a great day.

. I also want to wish my sister, Sherry, a very Happy Birthday!! You are truly the backbone to keeping our family going. I love you, Sis.

Hi, everyone; my goodness, I’m sure you, as everyone else, are ready to get life back to a somewhat normal agenda. This virus has certainly changed the way we live; it’s a very trying time. Such a sad time when we can’t hug our family and friends or even visit with them. I do not know about you, but I have always taken these things for granted. Such a relief to see some little things returning to a some what normal way of life.

I do not know of much to write. The Memorial Day Kid’s Fishing Tournament, along with the Kite Contest has been cancelled and will be held over Labor Day weekend. Also, as of now, not sure about the July 4th Fireworks Display, this will be decided at the May Chamber of Commerce meeting. Please do not hesitate calling the Chamber for any information you may need. We are here for you. Any business member can contact the Chamber with any Specials, any Updates, Flyer or Information of their businesses. Just email the Chamber at info@portoconnorchamber. Your information will gladly be passed on to our email list.

If you have not driven by King Fisher Beach, you will be surprised when you do. King Fisher Beach is totally transformed. The dredge company has been pumping sand for a couple weeks, I feel by the time this paper is published, the work will be finished.

Wishing all to stay safe and concerned with the present issues. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram–also call us 361-983-2898.

Hopefully, things are getting a little better for everyone since the Governor’s decision to lessen the restrictions on us. Hopefully the folks who need and/or want to get back to work will be able to do so. After all, one check sent out by the government will not sustain a person for long.

Since all the previously scheduled events we usually enjoy this time of year have been cancelled or postponed we don’t have as much to report this month. But we do hope you will find some things of interest for you to enjoy in this limited issue. Remember you are always welcome to submit any articles, letters or photos to us for consideration. We want to hear from you.

Thank you for reading Dolphin Talk.

Attention, 2020 Graduates:

The 2020 Graduates must be really disappointed this year. The big day they’ve been working for and waiting for will not be celebrated, at least not in the usual tradition. We would be happy to receive graduation announcements and photos from high school and college graduates in our area. We want to recognize them in this publication in our next issue. Please send your information and photo to us by June 10th to be included in our June 19th issue.
