Ruled by the Calendar by Capt. Stephen Boriskie

I have always been ruled by the calendar. Flipping the page gives me hope of the next opportunity to come. Another year of angling opportunities and a renewed sense of duck flight anticipation gets my blood pumping as the new year is upon us.

My January calendar is almost full with trips for both duck hunting and fishing and I couldn’t be more excited. Changes in the air temperatures are more frequent now as blast after blast of cold arctic fronts are in the forecast. This will drop our water levels more and more and force the fish to bunch up making it easier to find them. New arrivals of ducks are certain with the passing of these fronts as they continue to migrate from frozen Northern ponds and waterways to head South in search of the luscious grasses that adorn our shallow waters. The birds are later in the season now in physical development and are as healthy as they get with their full plume making it more exciting to down that trophy duck for your wall collection and table fare.

This is a favorite time of the year for the guides because of the weather changes forcing an easier find on the fish with fewer areas for them to thrive. The other thing though is it’s a time even for us to slip into the water and have a chance at that large trout that has eluded us in the warmer months. Remember these big girls, talking trout here, eat maybe once a day so have the right gear and lure selection and go methodical on your wade taking your time to survey the water looking for jumping mullet or herds of finger mullet. Then dedicate the time to work that area hard making more casts to the same location because often times your trophy sow trout gives the bait one look then once more on your next cast daring it to get close to her territory before she blasts out at the prey and slams it into oblivion.

Gearing up during January is key to your comfort and success in the marsh for water fowling as well as for being in the boat bait fishing or out amongst the fish wade fishing. You can always remove layers of clothing but if you don’t bring them with you can find yourself in dire straights as the water temps drop and the wind inevitably increases during your adventure.

Calhoun County Fairgrounds – March 7, 2020

In 2018 the Coast Guard counted 4,145 boat accidents in the United States that involved 633 deaths, 2,511 injuries and approximately $46 million of property damage nationwide.  Vessels in the State of Texas were involved in 204 of those accidents, which resulted in 38 fatalities, 123 injured people and $1,800,266.47 of property damage.

When boater education data was known, 74% of deaths occurred on boats where the operator did not receive boating safety instruction, compared to 18% of the deaths that occurred on vessels where the boat operator had received a nationally approved boating safety certification.  Calhoun County residents identified boating safety as an area that they wanted the Calhoun County Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service to focus on.  As a result of the input from the community the Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service/Texas Sea Grant Boating Safety Series will have a classroom and hands-on Boaters Education Course on March 7, 2020 from 8:30am – 4:00 pm at the Calhoun County Agriculture Building in Port Lavaca.  Successful completion of this course will provide the participant with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) Boaters Education Certification.

The TPWD Boaters Education Certification is required for anyone born on or after September 1, 1993 who operates any vessel over 15 horsepower, wind-blown vessel over 14 feet and all personal watercraft.  Participants should dress for the weather on the day of the class.  Expect to be outside for 2-3 hours.  The cost of the course is $20 which is due at the door.  Participants must register for the class at https://tpwd.elementlms.com/course/boater-education-classroom-course-965/.  Lunch will be provided courtesy of Coastal Bend Marine.

The Boating Safety Series courses are designed to provide a hands-on boating education to the public. The goal is prevention of boating and water related accidents.  If you have any questions, please contact Capt. RJ Shelly at the Calhoun County Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service office (361) 552-9747.

On Dec. 10, 2019, the “Hooked On Books” Book Club held its annual Christmas Party, and 28 lovely ladies braved the chilly temperatures to attend. The group was treated to a delicious meal of chicken spaghetti with various salads, side dishes, and a huge array of scrumptious desserts. After a brief discussion of December’s Book, “The Tattoist of Auschwitz”, the ladies participated in a lively and highly competitive “Chinese Christmas Gift Exchange”, with lots of good natured “stealing” of gifts, lots of laughter and visiting, and an abundance of Christmas Spirit and Good Cheer!! -Alane Haardt

Strong Marriages by Erny McDonough

Some of you remember that Pastor Joane and I were married in the Chapel. It was a Monday evening so we would miss the least amount of church activities. We honey-mooned at a bed and breakfast in Palacios and began what has been many blissful years together! Some of you did not begin your relationship by showing your future bride your “profit and LOSS” sheet, as I did. So often I have seen couples coming for marriage counseling who do not know their expectations of marriage and that makes it almost impossible for someone to fulfill those expectations.

Today I was talking with a counselor, who told me that she and her husband had been married 34 years and everyone who knew them can hardly believe it! “He is yang and I am ying! We like very few things alike. We agree on almost no food or places to eat. But the one thing that has held us together is that we both know commitment! I made a commitment to him and to God and he did the same and we are committed to keeping those commitments!”

How is your marriage? Does the question bring a smile to your face because it is one relationship in your life that is strong and uncomplicated? Is your marriage just another area of tension in your life? If your answer is the second, then you know firsthand how a stressful relationship can undermine your effectiveness and your well-being. Conversely, a well-connected relationship adds so much life and stamina that the impact is astounding.

The passionate love story in the Bible is found in the writings of Solomon. The Son of Songs depicts a deeply connected relationship. One of its foundational strengths is evident in this statement “This is my beloved, this is my friend!” The key is passion paired with the sustaining power of friendship and admiration. Together, let us explore some attitudes that contribute to a strong and well-connected relationship.

We are in this together! So much security comes from knowing you are each other’s high priority. This knowledge brings secure connection and confidence, in spite of the many demands of ordinary life. Communicate this by remaining available, keeping each other in the loop, and expressing positive regard toward each other. We all have so many things to accomplish that often we must divide to conquer. That is why it is so vital that verbally and non-verbally we express this mutual message: “I have got your back!”

I like who you are! Each one conveys admiration and respect to the other – both privately and publicly. Communicate love and respect, especially when you see things differently, and even when you do not agree. When inevitable tensions arise, discussion happens without judgment. It is okay to agree to disagree, but refuse to become disagreeable! Admiration is not false when you base it on the other’s incredible value in God’s eyes and in yours!

We connect spiritually! Find a common way to express your faith and grow spiritually. Even those who believe they have no faith have a strong one! There is no template for what it should look like because it is unique to each couple. Even though each of you has a preferred way of approaching God, it is important to develop a way of expressing your faith as a couple. The older one gets, the more spirituality will be important to them. Begin at the beginning of your relationship to have a place and a pathway to expressing your faith. Look for approaches that are meaningful to both of you and that bring a sense of fulfillment into the relationship.

We enjoy doing stuff together! Common interests and shared activities promote closeness, even if you feel like “yang and ying!” Bonds form when you have fun and laugh often. Do allow your busy life to dictate your every activity. While raising children, it is very easy to allow their activities to take prescidence over time together as husband and wife, but resist the business and carve out time for each other. Insist on making space for enjoyable times for just the two of you. Your shared activities can be as diverse as the universe. The possibilities are infinite.

I will be here forever! Your message of unyielding commitment brings security as you remind each other, “I am not going anywhere!” Confidence blooms when you know that at the end of the day, no matter what the day has brought, when the lights are off and everyone has gone home – and even when your dreams cease to exist and you have had to move one – you will still be together! Always remember, the longer you live together, the older you are getting! It will seem at times that nothing is the same as it was and that may be true, but the commitment should carry you through.

Strong, unwavering bonds are essential to your effectiveness in life and in the joys of marriage. A clear resolve to make it work goes a long way toward making the marriage strong and life-giving for the duration.
