Port O’Connor Chamber Chat by LaJune Pitonyak

As everyone knows January and February are the slowest months in Port O’Connor, although there’s much more going on than when the first “Dolphin Talk” made its appearance in February, 1996. There had been the Port Lavaca Wave and Victoria Advocate, our choices of getting local news and information. Then there were three local ladies, Joyce Rhyne, Margaret Jennings and Charlotte Graham, who worked together to establish Port O’Connor’s first ever paper. If not for these ladies, we probably would not have this fantastic piece of history. Can’t believe I’ve written an article for every issue. It’s been an honor to have been part of this history. ‘Thank YOU” Joyce for keeping this going, even though it used to be twice a month. But with less help you had to cut to once a month. Each paper takes hours and hours of work.

The 2019 Chamber membership applications will be mailed on March 1st. Please look over the new application and dues, as it has been updated. You may mail back or go online fill out and pay online.

If you are not a member, we ask you to become one and get involved in working within our community and projects.

Things are getting organized for the “ Crawfish Festival”, scheduled for April 27th. If you would like to volunteer a few hours, please contact the Chamber. All help is appreciated.

Our next meeting will be held March 11th at 6:30 p.m. at the Port O’Connor Community Center.

We had a wonderful turn-out for the most recent Port O’Connor Community Service Club meeting, but there is always room for more and ladies of all ages are welcome to join us!  The Service Club meets twice monthly at the POC Community Center and new members are always welcome.  Meetings are at 10 a.m. on the 1st & 3rd Thursdays each month (except for May through August plus December, when we meet only on the 1st Thursday).
The Service Club is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the Port O’Connor community by providing support and funds for programs and events for the betterment of this community.  If you are looking for a way to give back to the Port O’Connor community, come join us!

Along with many other organizations and businesses in Port O’Connor, the Service Club is grateful to have been able to provide support to our local Coast Guard station personnel with a donation of fifty-six $20 gift cards and a whole lot of frozen casseroles!
Highlights of some upcoming projects include:

February 14 –The annual Sweetheart Banquet sponsored by the First Baptist Church with support provided by Service Club members.
April 6 – our semi-annual community-wide Garage & Bake Sale.  The sale will run from 8 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. and will be closed from 11:30 a.m. to 12 noon when final sales will be handled; then the “BAG SALE” will re-open at noon and run until 1 p.m.

To donate gently used and “in good condition” items please contact either Susie DuBoise (818-203-2612) or Donna Vuichard (361-237-0476).  Note any furniture donations need to be inspected first, so please contact Susie or Donna to make arrangements.  These garage sales are the Service Club’s primary fund-raising events that make it possible for us to fund many other community projects, as well as a scholarship fund for local students.  As always, we appreciate the support received from our local community!

hooked-on-booksPOC’s “Hooked On Books” Book Club celebrated their February meeting with delicious Valentines themed food & beverages at the POC Library on Tuesday, February 11, 2019. The 24 ladies in attendance enjoyed visiting and discussing the book, “Vera Kera’s Family”, authored by POC’s own Agnes Hannes.  Agnes shared the details of the eight years it took to write the book, the extensive research into the Kera family history, and shared articles and photographs of the Kera family, then fielded questions from the audience. Everyone agreed that the book was an excellent read, and a great time was had by all!! The Club’s next meeting is March 12, 2019 at the POC Library, and March’s Book is “Where The Crawdad’s Sing” by Delia Owens. All are welcome!!  Photo: Nan Burnett, Agnes Hannes, Mary Ann Claiborne
