Michelle Marlin, Lydia Strakos, Shaney Bradford join the Board of the Friends of the Port O’Connor Library.

On Saturday, June 23, the Friends of the Port O’Connor Library held its Annual Membership Meeting. New board members voted in were Shaney Bradford, POC resident Michelle Marlin and retired Calhoun County HS principal Lydia Stakos. The Friends wish to thank Vera Wiatt, Joe Wiatt and Linda Orrick for their service to the organization and are grateful to them for their continued support as active members.

The Friends membership last year was at an all time high with 165 members. New and renewing memberships are coming in daily. Membership benefits include the quarterly newsletter and the opportunity to serve on Friends committees and projects. With the new library building nearing completion, the Friends are looking forward to shifting their focus and providing more membership benefits as well as community programs and events in the new library’s multipurpose room. To join or renew go to the Friends website. www.FriendsofPortOConnorLibrary.org

Building Update: The Friends have recently been blessed by the Tocker Foundation as they have not only awarded a substantial grant for new library furnishings, but have dedicated a library designer to provide recommendations for the interior layout and items to be purchased. “We want to make this building as functional and pleasing as possible for our community” notes Ursula Price, President. “We are extremely fortunate to have the Tocker Foundation’s expertise in guiding our decisions.” Funds are still needed to purchase items for the library. Donations can be made on the Friends website where you can also find a link to the Friends Amazon Wishlist and the link to order your commemorative brick. Order soon to ensure the brick is in place for the Grand Opening Celebration. The target for the Grand Opening is by year’s end. Contact us: LibraryFriendsPOC@gmail.com or find us on Facebook.

Congressman Michael Cloud, District 27, being sworn into office

Congressman Michael Cloud, District 27, being sworn into office

Congressman Michael Cloud voted July 11 in favor of H.R. 200, a bipartisan bill which includes the “Modernizing Recreational Fisheries Management Act of 2017” and passed by a margin of 222-193.

H.R. 200 reauthorized our nation’s primary marine fisheries law and included – for the first time in history – the priorities of the recreational fisheries sector and saltwater anglers.

The Act modernizes fishery management methods by:
• Reducing one-size-fits-all federal authority over fisheries
• Allowing regional councils, such as the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council, the flexibility to incorporate modern management tools and take a science-based approach to fishery stock rebuilding
• Requiring greater transparency and more public input in Fishery Management Plans
• Affording recreational anglers reasonable access to public marine resources

The issue is of particular importance to Rep. Cloud’s 27th Congressional District, given the widespread popularity of recreational fishing in the region.

“This is a truly historic day for anglers in this country as the priorities of recreational fishing are finally being recognized in our nation’s marine fisheries laws,” said Mark Ray, chairman of CCA Texas. “The provisions of the Modern Fish Act contained in H.R. 200 will provide both for the continued conservation of our marine resources and for the ability of Texas’ saltwater anglers to access those healthy resources. We greatly appreciate the support of Rep. Cloud on this vital fisheries management reform and we now look forward to working with our senators to ensure that the Modern Fish Act takes the next step and becomes law.”

On his first full day in office, Rep. Cloud also met with several fellow congressmen and with a group of District 27 residents, as well as working toward hiring staff for his congressional office.
