R.V. Tips from T&A

Summer season is now official! By the calendar and by the TEMPERATURE!!!! This article is going to cover Air Conditioning in depth. We touched on this last month, so some statements may seem redundant. Air Conditioners are expensive, and vital to your comfort so we felt some statements would bear the repetition.

A/C’s, on R.V.’s are not like our home A/C’s. Use and maintenance care is critical to provide the best service from this appliance. Filters should be cleaned weekly, more often if you have more than two people in your R.V., and if you are in and out of your R.V. several times a day. Air flow is vital to the operation of your A.C. unit. However, this does not mean it will work without a filter! A/C’s need filtered air as free of dust, lint, dirt as possible. Clean the top unit every 6 months. With A.C. turned off, use water hose to spray away salt, sand and debris. Check the fan, Polymer fan blades can become brittle and break, a drop of silicone lubricant at the fan shaft connection will keep the shaft turning freely and help prevent seizing up.

Temperature setting is very important in our high humidity, high heat coastal area. Optimal temperature setting is 77o. After sunset, you can reduce this to 75o for cooler sleeping. The A/C fan should be ON continuously, not on Auto. Keeping the fan on constantly moves the air through your R.V., which helps to prevent “hot spots” and provides a constant air flow across the compressor to evaporate condensation, even when the compressor is cycled off. Doing this keeps the compressor from freezing. When possible, if you leave your R.V. during the week, set your temperature to 85o-90o and have fan on high, manual mode. The A.C. will keep the humidity level down, the interior will be cool enough to prevent heat build up. When you return, the R.V. will cool down quicker with less load on the A.C. unit. Keep window coverings in place, sky lights covered, roof vents covered/closed, and doors closed to assist your A.C. in best possible service for you.

Using other electrical appliances in your R.V. should be limited to allow the A.C. to draw all the amps needed for efficient operation. Your A. C. requires 15 amps in normal conditions. (Double this if you have 2 A.C’s, Triple if you have 3) During days with temps above 90o and humidity levels of 75-85 % it will draw 20amps. Your R.V. refrigerator draws 9 amps, the water heater on Elec. draws 15 amps.(We suggest LP operation of water heaters) The microwave draws 13 amps, coffee makers draw 6 amps. Lights, phone chargers, video games, T.V. etc., draw 3 amps. One Rule of R.V. operation: Do not use an appliance in your R.V. that cautions you to not use it on an extension cord. This includes outlets on the exterior of your R.V. Why? Your R.V. is an extension cord! Your R.V. is powered by a shore power cord, which is drawing 30 amps or 50 amps. Now, you can see how quickly this power cord can be overloaded. It is extremely important your A.C. is able to draw full power. Low power will cause A.C. failure. We want you to enjoy your time with R.V. to the fullest!

It was a beautiful weather day for the annual Kid’s Fishing Tournament on Memorial Weekend. There were almost 80 kids participating this year. Within only 3 hours Saturday morning from the pier and front beach they caught 198 fish. The categories were, Biggest, Smallest and Most. The ages ranged from 3 years old to 12 years old and there were lots of parents and grandparents present enjoying the excitement and laughter as well.
Those receiving trophies this year were: Cora Pohler, Emma Villareal, Hunter Lieker, Tucker Carlswell, Carrigan Pohler, Brigid Spears, Jenna Mutz, Abby Carlswell, and Ellie Plummer.
Thanks to all the bait donors and volunteers that helped put this together. Kathy Pullin, Mary Frances Bauer, Lonnie & Elizabeth Jackson, Kacie Skalak, and my wife Julia Klesel.

Nice Reds! -Capt. Jeff Larson

Nice Reds! -Capt. Jeff Larson

May was a Great Month, June is on track to finish Pretty Good and July should be hotter than ever. May finished strong with Trout, Reds in the Slot and Over. The Trophy Trout Hunters pursuing with tops and tails were able to beat some personal best. Mostly just solid keeper trout were caught. The over 25” trout caught were CPR’d . The Bait Fishermen finished May with stringers of solids as well. We are a week into June, I’m actually on my 1st wading croaker trip of the season. 2 artificial guys catching a couple while the other fisherman and myself are boxing Trout and Reds. The guy on tops just strung 2 17’s, we are making a day of it.

Yesterday out of the Boat, on mid bay reefs, for trout was a struggle. There is always the one guide that is dealt the hot hand but after calling all my buds. I didn’t feel so bad. Little wading with some Croaks gets the ol’ confidence back up.

June started with a heavy in coming tide that brought the Bull Reds and Jack’s into the Bay. We smashed on them for a week. Setting Big Fish Records and having a ton of fun, tore up a bunch of tackle but that’s part of it.

My good friend Baron Jones and new found Friend Aaron Broussard were able to catch the last little bit of the Bull Red Run. The hard in coming tide had drastically slowed down which made for the shoulda been here yesterday excuse. The Beast Reds were there but not on a feeding frenzy like the week before. We shot plenty of footage. We are just waiting on some hopefully great edited footage for his Video Endeavor. Baron did manage to get some awesome video of Skyler of Clark’s Bait Camp stepping out on the dock to let me know that he didn’t have any sardines that morning. All the Offshore Fishermen had bought a truck load earlier that morning. Who knew you could run out of sardines. He did however have some mullet and squid which did the trick for that morning. It wasn’t a Barn Burner Day but we sure made it seem like it was a slam dunk on the Video.

June is heating up. July will be hotter. The good news is Red Snapper season is in full swing. We actually have some time to get out on the rigs for some Snaps, on my days off.

July 4th will be here before you know it. So plan accordingly. Law Enforcement will be patrolling the waters to keep the public safe and ready to respond to calls for help. Also make sure all your safety equipment is up to date and in your boat. Whistle, Flares [make sure they are Not expired] life vests for each person and throw cushions. Always have your ID and fishing license. The Game Wardens can check via a Smart Phone, there has to be cell service, it’s easier and quicker for them if you just have the documents in hand.

Setting up to be a productive Summer. Don’t wait on booking your trip too long. A quick deposit will save your desired dates. If you don’t like the heat. Remember we charter flounder gigging trips also.

Call the Saltwater Lodge and speak with Billy at: 713 907 4796 . He will hook you up. Pun intended.

Wear Sunscreen, Put your Plugs In and Drink Plenty of water.

Sam Lack with his tagged Redfish Wins $25,000 Scholarship in Texas Star Tournament

Sam Lack with his tagged Redfish
Wins $25,000 Scholarship in Texas Star Tournament

Young angler Sam Lack of Houston, caught a fish coveted by thousands of anglers, a tagged redfish! Sam caught the fish while fishing from a boat slip in Port O’Connor with his dad, sister and cousins. The kids were having a blast catching hardheads on cut mullet when Sam hooked something a little bigger. While measuring the fish Sam told his dad “there’s something sticking out of that fish.” After giving it a gentle tug, dad got Sam to read the tag and they realized exactly what they had caught. To top it all off, it was dad’s birthday!

Sam will be taking home a $25,000 scholarship from Texas Ford Dealers, 23’ Haynie Bigfoot, Mercury outboard and Coastline trailer.

There are still three Ford truck and Haynie boat combos and another five Haynie boats waiting to be claimed by lucky anglers who catch one of fifty-seven remaining tagged redfish! Along with these, there are still FIFTY-NINE empty spots on the leaderboard just waiting to be claimed! So get registered, get out, and win yourself a new boat or your child a life changing size scholarship!
