Letters to the Dolphin

The year 2017 ends my spring and fall fishing stays at Port O’Connor. For thirty plus years my family and I have enjoyed the great recreation and fellowship this town and area has provided. I still may get to slip down for a week … we will just see.

I have spent almost every birthday at POC for many years, celebrating the occasion with family and friends. I have to say that fishing at POC has provided me the most memorable sporting occasions of my life.

An album filled with fish and friends/family photos is over 4” thick. I plan on taking it with me as I age and I will be laughing and remembering these great times, places and people.

I want to thank the residents and business people of POC for the warm treatment and helpfulness we were always afforded. In our earliest days, Bill Tigrett and his able assistants always most helpful and had great accommodations. Alvin’s store and Bobby’s bait shop are remembered. Our RV stays were most enjoyably spent at the Beacon 44 RV Park with Doug and Mary Jo Walker. They ran a first class park and are examples of fine Americans who work very hard to make real successes of their businesses. Froggy’s bait shop was our launch point and always had service with a smile. The boat repair shops and the local hardware store always kept us up and running. Cathy’s and the other local restaurants provided many good meals and pleasant surroundings. I would be remiss not to mention Clark’s Restaurant, which in earlier times accommodated many family celebrations with outstanding food and service. Mr. Clark’s collection of Marlin fishing photos were the best I have ever seen. We stored the boat, 1 20’ Proline, with Ms. Kathleen on her side, with various storage businesses and individuals…always with ease and fair treatment.

As a former Navy Officer, I tip my hat to the hard working US Coast Guard personnel stationed in POC. Thanks for being there, guys!

To the patriotic spirit shown by the residents during the 4th of July events, the Warrior’s Weekend events, and Veteran’s Day celebrations, I also say, “Thank you”.

Ending then, I wish everyone in POC the very best for the present and the future. Thanks for the memories. Absolutely wonderful being a small part of Port O’Connor.
