Letters to the Dolphin

The year 2017 ends my spring and fall fishing stays at Port O’Connor. For thirty plus years my family and I have enjoyed the great recreation and fellowship this town and area has provided. I still may get to slip down for a week … we will just see.

I have spent almost every birthday at POC for many years, celebrating the occasion with family and friends. I have to say that fishing at POC has provided me the most memorable sporting occasions of my life.

An album filled with fish and friends/family photos is over 4” thick. I plan on taking it with me as I age and I will be laughing and remembering these great times, places and people.

I want to thank the residents and business people of POC for the warm treatment and helpfulness we were always afforded. In our earliest days, Bill Tigrett and his able assistants always most helpful and had great accommodations. Alvin’s store and Bobby’s bait shop are remembered. Our RV stays were most enjoyably spent at the Beacon 44 RV Park with Doug and Mary Jo Walker. They ran a first class park and are examples of fine Americans who work very hard to make real successes of their businesses. Froggy’s bait shop was our launch point and always had service with a smile. The boat repair shops and the local hardware store always kept us up and running. Cathy’s and the other local restaurants provided many good meals and pleasant surroundings. I would be remiss not to mention Clark’s Restaurant, which in earlier times accommodated many family celebrations with outstanding food and service. Mr. Clark’s collection of Marlin fishing photos were the best I have ever seen. We stored the boat, 1 20’ Proline, with Ms. Kathleen on her side, with various storage businesses and individuals…always with ease and fair treatment.

As a former Navy Officer, I tip my hat to the hard working US Coast Guard personnel stationed in POC. Thanks for being there, guys!

To the patriotic spirit shown by the residents during the 4th of July events, the Warrior’s Weekend events, and Veteran’s Day celebrations, I also say, “Thank you”.

Ending then, I wish everyone in POC the very best for the present and the future. Thanks for the memories. Absolutely wonderful being a small part of Port O’Connor.

This year’s Vacation Bible School (VBS) is creating a lot of excitement. The VBS will be held Monday, June 18 through June 22. The theme this year is “Game On, Gearing Up for Life’s Big Game”.

The church van will be picking up children about 8:15 a.m. each morning and returning them about noon each day. The children will enjoy the exciting stories and the sons, “Game On”, “Each and Every Day”, “We Have Hope”, “Joy”, and ”What Great Love”. The Worship Rally video each day is very exciting and keeps everyone anticipating the next day. Everyone will enjoy the mission stories and the exciting activities, refreshments, and the Bible stories.

Children in grades 3 to 6 are invited to Children’s Summer Camp at Palacious June 11-14. The church van will take the children to Palacios at 8:00 a.m., June 11. We need an adult lady to go as sponsor.

See you in church Sunday!

Chapel Happenings by Erny McDonough

It is so exciting to be living in God’s blessings! We are seeing new faces and reacquainting ourselves with friends of past years as they are returning to the Chapel. There are many things happening so quickly that we often are finding ourselves checking our calendars twice!

It was such an honor to have Captain Robert’s family here with him for Sunday, April 22, when one of his twin sons came thanking us for our prayers, so he now is known as the “Miracle Man” at Sponh Hospital in Corpus Christi. What a dramatic testimony of the love and grace of God, Who literally brought him back from the jaws of death to total recovery! In the words of a song we sang here, “To God be the glory for the things He has done!”

Pastor Joane is teaching “Battle Plan for Prayer” on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. and the students are very excited about what they are learning. We are having students drive in from Port Lavaca and Victoria to be a part of these classes and you can get in on them too by just driving to the Chapel. Everyone is welcomed and refreshments are served.

Our men hosted a breakfast on Saturday morning, May 5, here at the Chapel and it was well attended. The men enjoyed it so much that they have asked that we try to have them on a monthly basis, so plan to be here at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 9, for a special morning with great food and good fellowship.

What a great service we had with Melissa Beaty, who is headed overseas as a missionary. Many of you will remember that Melissa was only 6 or 7 when she moved from Port O’Connor with her pastor parents. It was a delight to see her passion for the work of the Lord and her dedication of the rest of her life to work in a nation that is hostile to the ministry of Jesus Christ. We are glad to provide her with financial support to help her take the message of the Good News to people who have never heard about the Lord.

Thank you for making my 29th Birthday Again such an enjoyable evening. We were able to share it with Pastor James of our Cuero church. There was food, cake and ice cream, plus cards and many well wishes. Chapel friends, you know how to make a man feel special! Thanks!

Mother’s Day was so special that we are thinking above maybe two or three Mother’s Day celebrations next year! Each mom present was presented with a special gift and Pastor Joane brought a very timely message to help moms with their huge task.
We are in full swing with our Taco Breakfast for the Troops. Since its inception, the Chapel has provided breakfast tacos for our Warrior’s Weekend. We have been collecting our supplies and are ready for the Egg Cracking Party at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 18. This is hosted by Mrs. Carol and is not only a “whole lot of cracking going on,” but fun, food and fellowship along with it. You are welcome to come by.

And Saturday, May 19, we will be gathering at the Community Center at 3:30 a.m. to get the tacos ready to be served by 7:00 a.m. We invite you to come by and help cook the sausage, egg tacos, to roll them, or help serve. Just show up and we will find something special for you to accomplish.

Could you believe that we are hosting Missionary Liz Munoz on May 20? She is a missionary to our service members in Japan and is coming to the Chapel to speak at both the 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. services. She and her family will be coming in on Friday to get a feel for the great work that we do as a community to honor our Warriors. This will be the first time she will experience what Port O’Connor does to honor those who give their lives for us. Come and enjoy this special time with us.

Memorial Day celebration will be led by Pastor Jesse, who has retired as a Master Sergeant from the Army. He will be leading our remembrance for those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom in the 11:00 a.m. service on May 27. It will be a very moving service and everyone is welcomed to attend, especially all our  veterans who truly understand the meaning of this holiday.

I could keep on going, but the Chapel is moving forward at a rapid pace and you are invited to be a part of all our activities. We are an interdenominational congregation who love people and want to share the love of Jesus with everyone we can meet! You will always find a warm welcome at the Chapel and are urged to, “Come, grow with us”!
