Chapel Happenings by Erny McDonough

An old friend once told me that when one is reaching maturity, “the days go slowly, but the years go quickly!” and we are finding this to be very true! The last Sunday of February, the Reverend George Kutach preached here and he and his wife, Linda, lead our praise time. It was very refreshing to allow our team to have a respite! In the evening of February 25, we had our Annual Meeting of the Members, and Pastor Jesse, Bro. Kenneth, and Sister Kim were returned unanimously on the first nominating ballot. A great spirit of unity, as usual, was seen once again! The reports showed that the Lord is continuing to bless the Chapel and our many efforts for the Lord through this community.

Pastor Joane led a delegation of our ladies to a special Connect meeting in Houston the first weekend in March. They returned with a glowing report of friendships renewed and the Holy Spirit’s special moving upon the hearts of the ladies present. They are looking forward to the Connect meeting in Kerrville in September.
Pastor Jesse ministered for us as did an out-of-town guest, the Reverend Bob Jones. Rev. Jones and his wife have worked in many offices, but most recently as educators at a university in Phoenix.

We had two volunteer teams help us during Spring Break. There were about a dozen students from Texas A&M Corpus Christi who helped paint the exterior of the Cuero Church. Thanks for that special labor of love. Here in Port O’Connor, we had five men from Denton, who came and replaced the siding on our Youth Room and the Church Office. Wow! Not only did their work make a visible difference, but it truly strengthened our building. Thanks for giving up your Spring Break to minister to us!

On March 16, 1964, I was first credentialed as a minister of the Gospel. Yes, I was still in diapers – almost! But I can truly say that if I had to do it all over again, I would surely make that same choice. Preaching has never been a vocation for me – it has always been a calling! I truly appreciate those pastors who took a chance on a kid and allowed me the opportunity of following what I know is my calling. AND, thanks to my older sister and mother who did most of the driving for me to go preach!
There are some special events planned for later this month. On Palm Sunday,  our Kids will receive our special Benevolence Offering and will sing in our “Jelly Bean Choir”. Last month was so much fun and the kids enjoyed it so much (so did we parents and grandparents) we are planning to do it regularly on the last Sunday morning of each month. Kids, come be a part of what is happening at the Chapel!

Our Annual Chili Cook-Off will be held at the close of service March 25. Contestants should bring their entries to church with them on something that will keep them warm. At the close of the morning service, we will gather with some “honest” judges who will help the Pastor win one of these contests for the first time. If you can be an “honest” judge, please contact Pastor Erny for instructions! We have a lot of fun and get to enjoy some great chili.

On Wednesday, March 28, we are beginning a Revival effort with the Jonathan Thacker Family from Russellville, Arkansas. The Reverend Thacker will be joined by his wife and their two children. Revival survices will be held on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings at 7:00 p.m. and then during our special Easter Services at 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Everyone is welcomed to come for some great singing, preaching, and we believe there will be a great move of God with a special anointing to touch each life present. Make plans to make each of these services and we believe you will be greatly blessed.

We will be gathering at the front beach for the Annual Sunrise Service on Sunday, April 1st. Please bring your chairs and come ready to sing praises to our Risen Lord! Again, we are expecting a record crowd. The Chapel will be providing hot coffee and Cathy’s Restaurant will fix those delicious cinnamon rolls that we enjoy once a year. Come with your neighbor and make a new friend at our Sunrise Services!

Fisherman’s Chapel is an interdenominational congregation whose goal is to see everyone make Heaven their eternal home. You will find a warm welcome here. “Come, grow with us!”

Spring is springing up everywhere! I love seeing leaves on the trees and blooms in the flowerbeds. I also love seeing visitors in town and activity around our community. POC Service Club is excited about their Spring plans and really wants you to be a part.

A time honored tradition in POC is the Spring Garage Sale which will be Saturday, April 7th at 8AM at the Community Center Pavilion. If you have never been to one of our garage sales, you simply don’t know what you are missing. If you have then you are asking ‘what time can I arrive?’ No matter what your taste or need, there is truly something for everyone, and all the proceeds go right back into projects for our community. The Bake Sale will start in the morning and the $ BAG Sale will be at 12:00 Noon.
We are still accepting donations of quality used clothing, household goods and décor. Your donation could help fund a scholarship or community activity. So, call Donna Vuichard at 361-237-0476 and she will assist you in setting up donations times and places. We can only succeed with your help and donations plus you will feel good about reusing what no longer works for you.

The POC Community Service Club invites you and your family to the 1st annual POC All American Family Fun Day on Saturday April 14th from 9-3 at Kingfisher Beachfront in POC. This day of fun is meant for building family memories and having special times together. Retro games and competitions such as three legged races and ring toss will be set up near the pavilion on Kingfisher Beach. The Friends of the Port O’Connor Library will have a Book Nook for reading and a book giveaway. Ribbons and medals will be awarded to families who win as they participate together.

POC Service Club will be serving ice cream, Speedy Stop has graciously donated water, Jeremy and Holly Dyes of ‘Twice the Ice’ have donated ice for this event and many club members have donated supplies, equipment and time.

Bring a picnic, your chairs and sunscreen and make a day of it. Please be aware that children will need an adult present as they participate in this fun day. If you have questions or need more information, please contact Kelly Gee at gollygeetx@alumni.ou.edu.

There are several other activities and fun events happening in POC this Spring. The POC Crawfish Festival is the last weekend of April and Warriors Weekend is just around the corner. If you have not found your niche in our little community, come let us help you look for just the right fit.

The POC Service Club meets the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month and welcomes women of all ages and stages to be a part. It’s a great place to meet new friends and be of service to others.

So, until next time, be safe, live simply, love openly, forgive generously and remember this quote from the amazing philanthropist and actor Danny Thomas who said “Success in life has nothing to do with what you gain or accomplish for yourself. It comes from what you do for others.” We would love to have you be a part of our success.

Crawfish Festival Coming Soon!

crawfish-logoExciting plans are coming together for this year’s 6th Annual Crawfish Fest & Cookoff, to be held on April 28th.  If you are not familiar with the Crawfish Fest, it is the Port O’Connor Chamber of Commerce’s ONLY annual fundraiser. Right now we are working on getting our sponsors for the event, as they play a major role in ensuring that we make a profit!  Our goal is to raise $30,000 this year, and in order to meet this goal, we are asking for sponsorships from local businesses and individuals that play an important role in our community. By giving to this annual event, you will be helping our mission, as well as allowing us to promote you or your business at our event. We are expecting over 2000 people at the event, and what better way to help get your business name out there!!

Profits from this fundraiser allow the Chamber funds to continue having our other annual events, such as the Memorial Days Kids Fishing Tournament and Kite Flying Contest, Fireworks display in July, Trunk or Treat, Lighted Boat Parade, and the Annual Christmas Party.  In the past years, we have raised enough funds to set aside for other projects as well, such as the new pavilion at King Fisher Park. We are considering some other projects at this time, and would love to hear any ideas you, as the community, might have as well.

If you would like to be a sponsor, or know of someone that would, you can see our sponsorship levels and form on our website, at www.portoconnorchamber.com. Feel free to call or email myself, Darla Parker at 713-857-0482, darla611@aol.com and I will be happy to get one to you!  Make sure to mark your calendars for the Crawfish Fest to be held on Saturday, April 28th!
