“Makin’ Memories” – Capt. Cody Spencer, Bay Flats Lodge

If you have made it a point to not go to the coast recently for a fishing trip simply due to the blistering summertime heat, then you should start making plans to do so in September. The later weeks of September generally signify the first real relief from high temperatures as Texas begins receiving some of the year’s first notable frontal passages from the north. It’s at this time in the year when the temperatures will begin to slowly drop allowing for milder conditions all along our coastal regions. The waters shall begin their greening process, and some of the season’s initial flights of ducks will start arriving from the upper states. The beginning of autumn will soon be upon us, and we all need to be ready.

Coastal bend anglers have an advantage over others in that they are presented with some of the finest fishing waters in Texas due to our location. And because we have such good fishing, anglers should spend just as much time as they can out on the water this month. It’s true that it is rather easy to get caught up in spending unnecessary time determining whether its best to be spending the day wading the shallows of a protected shoreline, venturing into the back-country for red fish, or drifting open-bay shell pads. But, don’t let the choices overwhelm you, as another beautiful thing about the month of September is that you don’t have to make a choice between doing any of these things on any one particular day. You can spend most your days this month doing all of them.

Higher tides generally become more common later this month, so anglers should start looking to the various back lakes on Matagorda Island, and to the shell reefs of San Antonio Bay, to start producing some of the finest trout action of the year. As for the reds, many will begin searching for them in Guadalupe Bay, looking for sand pockets and pushes (wakes) rather than tails. It’ll probably be best for you to maintain your standard summertime routine of starting early in the morning and starting out in some really shallow water.

For the artificial enthusiasts out there, some of the best top water action usually begins during the last two weeks of September, so make an effort to begin each day tossing smaller top water baits like the Skitter Walk Junior or the Super Spook Junior. But, if “Tops” don’t work, then “Tails” might. In this case, offer any of an assortment of plastic baits rigged on either 1/8 or 1/16-ounce jig-heads. Absent of any unexpected tropical weather, area bay waters should be in good shape this month, so try some of the more brilliant tail colors until you find one they like. Have fun out there, and be safe!

Local Boys getting it done right before school started back up.

Local Boys getting it done right before school started back up.

September is a great time of year for all outdoor enthusiasts. Football, Friday Night Lights, Saturday, Fishing or Hunting, Sunday, typically a day of rest or another chance to get another outdoor excursion for the memory books. Dove season for the northern two zones reported spotty at best. We are still waiting on our opener. Our Reports ranged from Argentina barrel melt down to the Sahara Desert shot a few. Our County Dove Season opens during Early Teal which makes things interesting if you are a hard charger and want to bag both species during a fun filled day of wing shooting. The Saltwater Lodge has its own private fields that can accommodate small groups and we also have plenty of connections for larger groups. We suggest you call to get an up to date report on the wing shooting we have to offer. The good news is if the doves aren’t flying we can always go fishing. Oh, Don’t Forget Gator Season opens also during Teal Season. You can really burn the candle at both ends.

Speaking of fishing, we are always working hard to fill your freezer with fillets. The tide has been very high as of late. This has a tendency to scatter back bay fish, typically reds. The Local Guides know this pattern well and with a young deck hand you will move from spot to spot quicker than breaking the Captain’s back pulling up the anchor himself. When the tides recede the reds will concentrate and school up making it a little easier to catch them in one spot.

The high tides have been making flounder gigging a little bit of a challenge. The walkers prefer the low tide. The high tide let’s the boats get to where the walkers dominate, plus they can cover more ground. The other night I went with Tommy on Capt. Pat Lester’s rig. We hammered six really quick on our way to a quick limit. It didn’t happen.

Capt. Cady went walking and they limited out much quicker than we did. On FB, Capt Graham and Powell posted quick walking limits. So even with high tides, walking is still affective, you just have to be creative and find those sandy shallow areas. The same goes for shell reefs. We hope everyone gets to enjoy the flounder run. The Lodge has plenty of experienced Flounder Guides who can show you a great time in a boat or walking the shallow sand flats.

Trout fishing has still been steady in all the mid coast bays. The real treat is getting into the surf. The 1st and 2nd gut have plenty of trout in them. It seems the 1st gut closest to the beach has been the preferable place to catch in the slot Redfish. In the surf or Bays, Artificials or Live Bait (Shrimp or Croaker) are producing best for the Texas Slam limits. The newly arriving cold fronts will be turning everything on. Literally and figuratively. Now is the time to Book at Saltwater Lodge so we can fine tune your Bucket List requests.

There is plenty to do this fall. We are setting up to have another banner year in the outdoors.

Just a heads up to the readers, We are expanding our marketing plan which means limited availability. Since hunting season is only a short time, I am suggesting you get your deposits in to the Lodge to lock your dates into place. We are gearing up for Cast and Blast Combos. Weekends are booking up fast with our Professional Guides this year. We hope to hear from you soon.

The Booking Hotline is: 361-785-3825, Ask for Scott the Outdoor Specialist. He is the Man with the Outdoor Plan.

Wishing you bloody clothes, feathers in your face and the odor of a wet dog in your nose.

Airboat Redfishing & Back Water BayFishing Action

It’s Redfish Rodeo time and the Capt’s of Castaway Lodge have been coming out of the shoot taking the buzzer to 8 seconds on every ride. Explosive action on schools of Redfish solid and bursting the slot to 32” have come to hand on both artificial lures and live bait. Talk about kicking Septebmer off right! Light Northerly winds and blown up tides seem to be the ticket. Tides have at times had the water in the parking lot at the boat ramp here in Seadrift. Capt. Donnie Heath stumbled into his career best Redfish at 32” on topwater scouting ahead of trips with Capt. Nathan Beabout working up solid numbers on soft plastics including pumpkin/chart and chicken on a chain colors. Trout numbers looked good on hardware with guests of Brian P. but day 2 was a Redfish meltdown that started off a great run over the big weekend. Capt. James Cunningham hit me by text early telling me they were “surrounded” by Redfish and guests were having a ball. Capt. Chris Cady had several days by airboat and that was a lot of fun for guests of Yaw’s Construction and JM Green.

We’re looking for stable water levels when fishing takes off at this pace and that has a lot to do with where the fish are going to be day to day. Saturday’s extreme success met a slower action on Sunday with Capt. James Cunnigham reporting early that the tide had come up what seemed like two feet overnight. Sure enough that made for some challenges with the fish changing locations and pushing into farther reaching shallows. Wendi Haffelder fishing with her husband and Capt. Donnie Heath struggled to find numbers but she managed a solid 31” Redfish and that just made the day. Capt. James located the fish at the mouth of a bayou and he said “we caught one fish on the first stop and then hit a wall until the last stop when we found them packed up tight and managed full limits. Capt. Chris Cady working by airboat on the big tide reported lots of near 20” Redfish coming to hand. He said “we must have caught 80 almost 20’s” with guests of JM Green taking solid numbers and lots of action.

Flounder Gigging

We’ve got a around 55 nights of Flounder Gigging left before the season closes November 1 for the Winter break. Every day approaching November will take us closer and closer to the Fall run and we’ve got the team to put you in the middle of the action. Combine a bayfishing trip with an evening of Flounder Gigging for a great combination trip and experience the best of the Texas mid-coast.

Teal & Alligator

We’ve got the usual reports on Teal with solid numbers that have been here and gone and then more have shown up. Reports seem to indicate birds holding North of us and we’re just starting to get Hummingbirds here at the lodge. Yep, they tend to correlate and migrate at similar times. Alligator have been cruising around on the freshwater inflows and we’re set for a big time with lots of hunters getting ready to get wet and muddy.

New Sportsmen’s Complex
Guests have been marveling over all the new facilities and just enjoying the heck out of their visits here to the lodge. We continue to dial in all the processes and the biggest movement has been in the game cleaning facility.

The Fishing Is Always Best When YOU Can Get Away!!

“The Way I See It” is an attempt by the columnist to enlighten readers on a subject as he views it, and does not necessarily reflect the views of this publication.
Understanding Hillary

We are less than 2 months away from the most important election in our lifetime, probably since 1860. There is much polarizing rhetoric, disinformation, and out-right lies being circulated by both strong supporters and paid propagandists. I strongly recommend that everyone take the time to read Dinesh D’Souza’s
Hillary’s America to get an in depth study of Hillary Clinton and also Gary Byrne’s Crisis of Character. Both are available from the County Library.

Hillary’s America explains the history of the Democrat Party, the effects of the “Progressives” on both parties, how the young Marxist Saul Alinsky used his experience studying the gangs of Chicago to create his brand of “Community Organizing” for power and profit, and how his followers like Hillary Rodham and Barack Obama have used his “Rules for Radicals” to fundamentally change the Democrat Party and American politics. It explains that the new “Democrat” political dynamic is “politics as war”. The constant divisiveness and infighting is intentional to shift attention from what is really happening. They promise a ‘Utopian Socialism’ but radicalize the socialists and youthful idealists into so many directions that the only thing ever really accomplished is UnConstitutional growth of govt and usurpation of power by the Federal Govt and political “Insiders”. These “Insiders” network together to push a Globalist Agenda to be administered by the “Intellectual & Political Elite”, namely themselves, for their power and profit. And I mean truly “obscene profits” based not on any economic production, but only on political and financial manipulation. The Clinton Foundation and Obama’s “Green Energy Projects” are examples of shifting huge amounts of Govt money to Crony Capitalists that produce nothing of use or value to the Tax Payers. But they provide huge political pay-offs and “contributions” to the politicians involved.

Also they give themselves “socialist control” over business, trade, immigration, energy, and property rights, but take no responsibility for the failures. It has become a kind of “inverted fascism”; govt control, not to increase production & efficiency, but to create waste, failures, and chaos. And the “Solution” is always more Govt control, more bureaucracy & regulation, and spend more Govt money we don’t have. And always borrow more money “into existence” to support the Welfare State that buys votes as it destroys people, families, and communities. This also destroys the value of dollars in circulation, savings, and investments.

Crisis of Character was written by a Secret Service Uniform Division agent that served in the White House, and focuses on the Clinton’s behavior. This is a “must read” for those that get their info from the Mainstream Media, and a confirmation of the worst suspicions of those that have distrusted the Clintons. The real Hillary Clinton reveals herself to the “servants” in the White House, and it is not the same as the polished professional image shown on TV. Read the book for all the details.

As we approach the election, more and more frightening information is coming out about Hillary’s past, the Clinton Foundation, her conduct as Sec State – selling influence and supporting our enemies like the Muslim Brotherhood, lack of obtaining any goals, and her constant lying. “The Smartest Woman in the World” is best remembered for her lack of memory in Congressional Investigations and FBI questioning, plus her, “At this point, what difference does it make?” She wants to be President, acts like it is her due, but can not or will not obey the simplest regulations on handling Classified Material. She “does not recall” any of the Security briefings, but signed the “Nondisclosure Form” saying she had, and she understood rules and the penalties for failure. In recent FBI interrogation she answered “could not recall” to 39 (or more) important questions. Her supporters excuse this for the possible brain damage she suffered as a result of a concussion 4 years ago. If she is that “brain damaged”, she should not be in any ‘Office of Responsibility’ much less President.

The evidence points to the fact that Hillary Clinton “willfully, knowingly, and intentionally” used an unsecured Email server for State Dept official business because she did not want her correspondence subject to Freedom of Information Requests. This demonstrates criminal intent. She often sent Classified Information on this unsecured server, even when marked (C). Some of this info was so Classified that it can not even be revealed to Congress! Hillary lied about sending any Official Emails. When proven she did, she lied about not ever sending Classified Emails. When proven she did, she lied about not ever sending emails that were marked Classified. When proven she did, she now says she didn’t know what (C) meant, and did not get the Security briefings. She is in clear violation of laws that require the offender to be punished by fine and prison, and be banned from ever holding any Public Office. Clearly there are only two possibilities: she is psychotic or brain damaged to the point of legal incompetence, or she is Guilty of all of the above. Either way, she should not be President and it is possibly criminal for anyone to even suggest that she be elected President.

I believe that her arrogance and psychosis has reached the point of “Legal Incompetence”. Perhaps it would be cruel to put her in prison, even if she greatly deserves it; but she definitely needs to be removed from public life, and be closely supervised by mental health professionals. Plus there is now growing evidence that she has serious physical problems that may be contributing to her mental lapses and irresponsibility.

The Clinton Foundation should be investigated under RICO laws. Clinton Cash by Peter Schweizer is another book that every voter should read, also available through the library. That ‘charitable foundation’ is a huge ‘money laundering operation’ that has taken in hundreds of millions of cash and billions in “pledges” from around the world. Many from people and organizations with “issues” before the State Dept. It has been widely described as “Pay to Play” in the media. Millions, even billions of dollars in fines could be recoverable and applied to the Federal Debt. And dozens of people should be prosecuted or turn States evidence. It truly is a ‘Racketeer Influenced and Criminal Organization’, and run ‘at Tax Payer expense’.
