We encourage everyone who wishes to be a part of honoring our wounded soldiers to join Warrior’s Weekend Volunteers at our meeting on Monday, February 8 at 6:00 p.m. at the Port O’Connor Baptist Fellowship Hall.

We will be finalizing plans for the first POC Muster to be held on March 5, as well as updating all as to how Warrior’s Weekend XX is shaping up for 2016. Please consider being a part of our volunteer group this year as we honor our warriors.

On February 8, 2016, Mrs. Grace Stone of Port O’Connor will be 100 years old. Grace is the mother of Susie Onishi and is active, along with Susie, in many community events.

We would like to honor Grace by sending her at least 100 birthday cards by that date. We are asking our readers to send her a card. Whether you know her personally or not, we think 100 years is certainly worth noting.

Jerome and Sharon Preslar of Port O’Connor will celebrate their 50th Golden Wedding Anniversary on February 12th. They were married on February 12, 1966 at Our lady of the Gulf Catholic Church.

Jerome and Sharon have two sons, Jerome (Lisa) and Ryan (Leslie) and two granddaughters, Lindsey and Makenna.

Seadrift City Council held its regular monthly meeting on January 5, 2016. A number of citizens were present to hear the Mayor’s “State of the City 2016” report as he told of the City’s challenges and successes (See page one.) and thanked the City staff for their dedicated service.

Monthly reports were given. Police Chief Leonard Bermea was pleased to report that for the first time Seadrift had its very own “Blue Santa” this Christmas. Enough toys were given that, in addition to local families, some others in the County were recipients. Additionally, 22 coats have been collected in the on-going coat drive, with four coats being distributed locally. The Department would be pleased to receive toys and coats from citizens for future delivery.

The Police Department received 343 calls for service in the month of December. The calls ranged from information to calls resulting in arrest. Forty-seven traffic stops were conducted, resulting in 37 warnings and 22 citations, ranging from speeding to public intoxication and other various violations. There were nine arrests made: terroristic threat; warrants; traffic; and family violence.

Mayor DeForest gave the Building Permit report, noting that 2015 was the biggest year for permits since he has been mayor. There were 18 building/construction permits, resulting in a property valuation of $1,101,395.00. There were 25 placement/manufactured housing/portables permit issued at a valuation of $318,234.00. Repair/remodel permits totaled 12; valuation $105,943.00 and there were 14 placement/RV permits issued. Demolition/move-out permits totaled four, decreasing the tax valuation by $11,910.00. The total increase to the City for the 2015 year was $1,513,662.00.

Municipal Court reported 18 cases closed last month and 22 new cases, making a total of 102 current cases. Three weed/public nuisance letters were sent out. The amount of fines collected for the City was $1,442.36.

In the Animal Control report, Councilman Brigham reported that six dogs were picked up and impounded to Port Lavaca; eight dogs were picked up and returned to owners with warnings; one dog was returned to owner with tickets, 15 verbal/writing warnings were issued; there were two dog bite call outs (cleared) and new homes were found for two dogs. Also, two animals were hit by cars. Four cats were trapped and impounded and 15 wild animals were trapped.

In other business, Council voted for improvements to be made on water lines in the Callender area, abiding by its commitment made to the annexed area.

They also voted to amend the Capital Improvement Project Plan to reflect the water/sewer improvements that will be required within the next five years by TCEQ. Preliminary engineering was authorized to begin.

Council formally set the upcoming Municipal Election Day as May 7, 2016, with early voting beginning April 25.

Seadrift City Council meets the first Tuesday of each month, 7:00 p.m. at Seadrift City Hall. All citizens are welcome to attend.
