I’ve talked about the Bunco Group of enterprising ladies who had for some long time met in our Library as we didn’t have the money to pay for the Community Center. Now we seem to have an active group, meeting at the Community Center, that keeps a minimum of three tables full of players, without an Elvira.

The previous group met on March 3 with a full group of three tables with Pat Ekstrom and Sally Ragusin hostessing the event in the memory of our Irish forefathers. Carrying off the prize for most games was Biddie Hileman with a visitor from Colorado, Beverly Agy not only capturing the most Buncos’ prize but also the Floating Bunco. Hope you return to see us, Beverly, to defend your status. And our normally high winner of all prizes, Evelyn Lewis had to settle this time for the Booby Prize. Oh, well, better luck next time, Evelyn.

Hostesses next time for Tuesday, April 7, 2015 will be Biddie Hileman and Sally Jones, and you can just imagine the surprise up their sleeves that they have planned. Do contact Shirley Gordon at the Library for further information or for reservations. She will be more than happy to explain everything to you.

Tuesday, March 17 was St. Patrick’s Day, the Patron Saint of Ireland; or at least one of them. Patrick has been been known throughout the years of the alarming feat of driving the snakes from Ireland; however, according to reports and surveys from various geologists, there were no snakes there. But his Saint’s Day will always be celebrated here in the United States with parades and green beer and costumes. And if you’re ancestors cannot prove that they are Irish on that particular day, being of Swedish, or French or Slavic heritage, somehow everyone seems to have a small amount of Celtic blood in them. Erin go bragh!

Spring Break has arrived for many school kids; sadly, the last week was not just UGH but cold and nasty. Thankfully, last Friday and Saturday, the worm turned and we had beau-ti-ful weather; just hope it continues. I’m, as so many other residents, TIRED of cold and rainy days! It’s time for SPRING! Do hope that our Winter Texans who are still here enjoyed the past days of Warm respite. And hopefully, many more.

The 3rd Annual Arts & Crafts Festival, as sponsored by the Lions Club, took place on Saturday, March 14th on a delightfully warm day. But Friday the 13th was the day when the work was done to get everything in place for Saturday. Thankfully, there were several helpers including Michael Polaski and Sue Kubecka as well as Lynn Reeves, President of the local Lions Club as well as the Zone 12 Chrm of the Lions Club, and Joyce Jordan, Coordinator, and her wonderful husband John Jordan. They set up tables and chairs along previously marked areas, and scrubbed the tables for usage by the vendors. Additionally, on the outside, markers and stakes were set to accommodate those vendors who were set outside the Pavilion. Also helping with ice chests and cold drinks was Dell Weathersby, manager of our local bank.

Saturday meant the setup by the various vendors and there were so many with very unusual talents to exhibit: Ms. Julia with incredibly gorgeous jewelry; the turquoise made me cry; Mitch Edwards with stunningly created birdhouses along with very unusual lamps; Bob with unbelievable leather works; and one very unusual display of pens created from mesquite and other woods. And our local artist, Jennifer Goode O’Neill with stunningly displayed photographs of our local area; I was so lucky to purchase a very special one!

But the capping of everything were the bbq sandwiches cooked and sold by the Smokin’ Nuts under the direction of Donny Haynes; the meat is extraordinary and very tender and beautifully seasoned. And we are so very lucky to have the Smokin’ Nuts to participate in our many events.

And if you missed this exhibit of so many unusual and beautiful items, let alone the stunning and scrumptious bbq, well … hope you make it next year!

There were seven arrests: 2 on Warrants; 3 Family Violence; 1 Terroristic Threat; 1 Juvenile Arrest; and 1 Theft of 50-500 dollars. Chief Bermea praised the workers at Dick’s Food Store for their help in solving the theft.

During the month there were 103 traffic stops, resulting in 22 Citations and 81 Warnings.

Chief Bermea was happy to report that the Department has received a $14,000 grant from Homeland Security which was used to purchase two 100 watt car radios and one long-range hand-held radio. He expressed his thanks to the Seadrift Chamber of Commerce for their generosity in purchasing a $3,900 patrol car camera.

Mayor DeForest gave the Building Permit Report, noting that five permits had been approved, totaling $289,000.00 increase in property valuation to the City.

City Judge Janet Rosenboom reported 25 new cases for the month of February. Twenty-seven cases were closed, leaving 61 current cases. Total fines collected were $2,849.10. Mayor DeForest reported that application for the biennial Texas Dept. of Agriculture-Community Development Grant has been submitted. Should the City be awarded the $275,000 grant, it will be used for sewer/water upgrades.

The Mayor reminds Seadrift citizens that March 23 through 26 is the annual Spring Clean Up. Brush to be picked up must be stacked prior to March 23. Details are available at City Hall.

The next meeting of Seadrift City Council will be held Tuesday, April 7, 7:00 p.m. at City Hall. All Seadrift citizens are welcome to attend.
