The fifth grade students at Seadrift School have been studying five different types of alternative energy – solar, wind, water, geothermal, and biofuels. During their study of wind energy, the students were posed the problem: Can wind energy lift a paperclip? The students constructed a windmill and tested its ability to do this job. The students learned that as the air moved, it rotated the blades of the windmill and lifted the paperclip. Wind energy was transformed into mechanical energy and work was accomplished.
