Oxymoron by Erny McDonough

Most of us remember from our High School English classes what an “oxymoron” is. According to our English grammar, an oxymoron is “a figure of speech in which seemingly contradictory terms appear side by side”. If one would browse the internet, they would find over 100 examples of oxymorons. Allow me to list a few examples: “alone together”; “Civil War”; “found missing”; “good grief” (actually I have preached on this topic); “growing smaller”; “minor miracle”; and “only choice”.

In that list, however, I found one other oxymoron that I truly can not understand. It is “devout atheist”. My Webster’s Dictionary defines “devout” as “worshipping, attending to religious duties”. I have never been an atheist, nor have I ever met a true atheist – one who truly did not believe there was a God – but I have never put “devout” and “atheist” together either.

Recently, there was an article in Time magazine which reported that a “non-belief system” is growing in America. In fact, it is reported that atheist churches are taking hold in the Bible Belt of America. The report stated that there is a growing popularity of meeting places for nonbelievers, such as Houston Oasis. “Houston Oasis is one of the fastest growing, so-called ‘atheist churches’ in the U.S.” I understand that the founder has stated that he was inspired by the Reverend John Olsteen, the late pastor of “The Oasis of Love” (better known as Lakewood Church) for the church’s name.

But an oxymoron is not intended to promote nonsense. It is made of “seemingly contradictory terms”. Oxymorons help to illuminate deeper truths, and this helps me see what I believe “atheist churches” illustrate.

I strongly believe that what draws people to church is the extent to which followers of Christ demonstrate His love and unity. The real drawing power is not in what happens inside the four walls of the sanctuary, but what takes place in the public square. People of all spiritual persuasions (or of no such persuasion) will be drawn to the expression of community. Local churches are intended to be inviting representations of the true Church, which is the living body of Christ by true believers. Therefore, what I see is that we should not be surprised when we witness non-believers, even atheists, attempting to emulate what a real church is, as long as they can remove the claim of God’s existence or the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

Responding to such hunger for community is one of the most compelling tools for evangelism. From small group settings to public outreaches, the Church must engage people of all ages and ethnic groups to have a personal encounter with Jesus Christ through involvement in a loving community. As a follower of Jesus, we do not have to reach some academic level to share the Gospel. We can reach out with kindness and concern to the people who surround us in our neighborhoods, at our jobs, and in the stores in which we shop!

But, my question is: what about those “churches” that still have Christ’s name above their entrances, who have become only “community”, and have left the Lord outside? We see them on television. They have a very lively band and excellent singing group. They have a very positive “sermon” that makes everyone feel good about themselves and their neighbors (the “I’m okay – You’re okay” messages). They have the social programs that make them loving and caring to a hurting world. But, Jesus has been left outside! There is little or no mention of sin and they seem to believe that somehow everyone is going to “a better place” when their time on earth has ended.

I have said many times, if being good and doing good is enough for God to reward us with Heaven, then I do not want to go to Heaven! WHY? Because, a God Who would require the incarnation, the sinless life on a fallen earth, and the inhuman death of crucifixion of His Only Son – Who would treat His Only Son with such “cruelty” – I would not want to see how He would treat me! I have never seen the glories of Heaven and lived in eternity like the Incarnate Jesus. I have lived on the earth and endured a few of its temptations and failed miserably, unlike Jesus who faced every temptation known to mankind and remained sinless. I have never begun to desire to be treated to a crucifixion, although I deserve it, but Jesus gladly went to the cross in my place! The Creator willingly became a part of this world’s creatures so He could become the perfect sacrifice for my sinful nature. He has proven His infallibility, and I prove often my many faults! So, if “good” is enough, then why did Jesus have to die for me?

Those groups who enjoy community, as I do; who are attempting a wholesome lifestyle, as I am; and who want the friendships and brotherhood that “Church” offers – but want to do it without God – I do not believe they qualify for being called a “Church”! Call them the Lions’ Club, the Women’s Service Club, the CCA, the NRA, or any other name they wish to identify themselves with, but please do not allow them to fool themselves into thinking they are a part of “The Church”! The Church is the body of Jesus Christ! It has been purchased by the precious blood of Jesus Christ! It is those who have been called out of a world of sin and who have dedicated their lives to the Lordship of Jesus Christ! There is no other way to Eternal Life with God except through God’s grace provided me through my faith in the work of Jesus Christ on Calvary’s Cross. And, the benefits of being a part of the “True Church” are “out of this world”!

I applaud all those who are looking for community, friendships, and brotherhood in the Church, but I challenge those in the Church to be diligent about making sure those who come find the reason for our community, friendships, and brotherhood – Jesus Christ! Be sure that when one finds a True Church, they will know the difference in the genuine and the substitute. Come to Church! Get involved! And see what a difference you can make in this world in which we live!

What a fantastic time we had at the Fall Senior Adult Camp at Camp Zephyr. Our Church was well represented by twelve attending. This included Kenneth and Grady Jean Clark, Doyle Adams, Alice Pittman, Donnie and Shirley Martin, Mary Nell McGee, Rupert and Irene Sorrow and Tommy and Brenda Smith. It is difficult to say what was the most impressive at the Camp. The music was “out of this world” with solos by Donnie Martin and piano solos by Shirley Martin, quartets, duets by Marcos and Sue Gohlke and many, many others. The preaching by Cowboy Church Pastor David Parks was great. The devotions by George Yarbrough were very thought provoking and, as usual, the Bible Teaching on “Ezra” by Dr. Jimmy Arnold was exceedingly professional and a real “eye opener”. The food at each meal was delicious along with the home baked goods for refreshments at the breaks. I would have to give this year’s Fall Senior Adult Camp an “A Plus”. The cost for a motel room, all meals and a money-back guarantee is $100.00 per person. The next Senior Adult Camp is the Spring 2015 Camp, which is March 2-5, 2015. Make your plans now to attend. If you need additional information, call Donnie Martin at 983-2727 or Doyle Adams at 983-4866.

Last Sunday’s services were well attended and Bro. Martin’s morning service was one that really reached down into your heart. Bro. Raymond Grant’s children’s sermon was well received by children and adults alike. Before Bro. Martin’s sermon, the Adult Choir sang “Steppin’ On The Clouds”.

The evening service was great as many of those who attended the Senior Adult Retreat gave testimonies of their experiences.

The recent Church “Birthday Bash” celebrating with those who had birthdays in July, August and September, was another Big Success. We had home-made ice cream and cakes and all were delicious and all you could eat.

The Church is now in the midst of “Operation Christmas Child”, the 2014 Christmas Shoe Box Campaign. Empty shoe boxes are available in the church foyer with an instruction pamphlet on how to pack your shoe box. Make a child happy somewhere in the world by packing a shoe box. The boxes will be picked up November 9, 2014. So don’t delay.

The Church Youth will have a “Trick or Treat” this year EXCEPT they will not ask for candy, but canned goods or food stuffs for the Thanksgiving and Christmas Baskets for Port O’Connor needy families. The collected food will be delivered to Fisherman’s Chapel for distribution.

See you in church Sunday!

What a great day to be serving Jesus! We know that Jesus is coming very soon and that what we are going to do for Him, we must be actively pursuing! We will only be eternally rewarded for the things we do now for the Lord’s Kingdom, so we are doing all we can to help build the things of God! We continue seeing visitors at the Chapel and are having great times of refreshing as we come to His House to praise the Lord and leave here to worship Him with how we live daily for Him and His causes.

Captain Robert had another great class with the Sea Academy. We do not have next year’s calendar worked out yet, but there will be (the Lord willing) classes in 2015. Not only are we training Boat Captains, but have the opportunity of meeting some really great men and women who want to work in the Port O’Connor area. Thanks, Captain Robert for your hard work!

Our Friday Night Youth leaders are continuing to work hard to provide an evening of fun, food, and fellowship for the youth of our community. We now are having kids come from other towns, like Seadrift, and they are very welcome! Now that we are about to enter the Holiday Season, Thanksgiving and Christmas, the Friday Night Youth schedule will vary, so keep watching or call before you come.

We have started a new emphasis at the Chapel and are calling it “Corporate Prayer”. We meet Sunday evenings at 5:00 p.m. for a special time of prayer in unique ways. This is not the normal “prayer meeting” where requests are listed and people go pray, which is great, but we target areas of concern and together pray for these needs. Come and try it.

We enjoyed a great services the first Sunday of this month as we hosted Reverend Jr. and Mrs. Bobbye Garcia. They are a young couple who have felt the call of the Lord to move to Hallettsville and start a church there. They have two children and have sold their home and bought another in Hallettsville, have changed their jobs and are now working out of Hallettsville, and are expending a lot of energy at establishing a new Church for God’s glory! We were glad to help them with a special offering, prayer, and pledge to help any other way we can.

We are already working on our Community Thanksgiving and Christmas Baskets. These baskets will go to needy families, not greedy ones! Our Annual Thanksgiving Service will be on November 23, at 6:00 p.m. Everyone should place that date on their calendar and be ready for a great community-wide service, which will conclude with a time of fellowship around the tables.

Fisherman’s Chapel is an interdenominational congregation that meets together to praise the Lord and learn how to “worship God” during their daily lives. One will always find a warm welcome at the Chapel and you are urged to, “Come, grow with us!”

National Pastor Appreciation Month Celebrated at Fishermen’s Chapel

Thank you seems so inadequate for all that Pastors Erny and Joane McDonough do for the church and our community. Sunday, October 12, they were honored with cards and flowers, hand drawn pictures from the children and a delicious potluck luncheon and lots of hugs and handshakes as the chapel said thanks, gracias, we appreciate you, you’re special to us, we love you and God Bless You to Erny and Joane. They mean so much to lots of people. Happy Pastors’ Appreciation Month to them and all those who serve our churches and chapels, synagogues and cathedrals. -Kelly Gee

In Remembrance of Nina Weaver

Nina Weaver 5/19/1941 - 5/25/2013

An effort is underway to raise funds to plant a live oak tree at Seadrift School as a living memorial honoring Mrs. Nina Weaver. Because of her love of trees, flowers, and especially her love for Seadrift School – both students and personnel – it seems fitting to honor her memory in this manner.

Nina Annette Sanders Weaver passed away on May 25, 2013 at the age of 72. She was born on May 19, 1941 in Seadrift, Texas to the late R.W. “Bill” and the late Goldie Mullins Sanders. Nina was a teacher and administrator for 40 years. She served as Seadrift School lead teacher/prekindergarten teacher for many years before moving to HJM Elementary School campus as assistant principal. From there Nina returned to Seadrift School as principal for three years before retiring in 2003. Nina was well loved by students, staff, parents, and community.

With this gesture of planting an oak tree, we will be acknowledging Mrs. Weaver’s years of dedication, love, and service to the Seadrift community and its school. If your life has been touched by this wonderful person, and you feel so moved, please leave a contribution at the school office with Robin Guice or Larena Kern, or you may mail your contributions to: William Hahn, 2023 FM 2235, Port Lavaca, TX 77979.

Obama Deportation Lawsuit

Most of us know that Barack Hussein Obama’s father was not a US citizen and never became one. In fact, a few years after Barry was born, his father was deported after abandoning mother and baby to go to Harvard. But that is just the beginning of Obama’s clouded “citizenship”. When his mother married Lolo Soetoro, he was adopted under Indonesian law and became an Indonesian citizen. There has been no paperwork shown that he ever restated US citizenship. There is much anecdotal evidence that he attended Occidental College as an Indonesian Student under a Fulbright Scholarship, but his records are “sealed”. By August 2012, his Campaign Fund had spent over $5 million with Perkins-Coie, a D.C. law firm to keep those records “sealed”. Using fraudulent documents is a serious crime, but has been ignored for Obama. WHY?

On March 1, 2012 the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department gave a press conference in which it was revealed, after 2,200 hours of investigation, that both Obama’s draft card and his birth certificate were poor amateur forgeries. Also his Social Security # does not pass E Verify.

1. That although there may or may not be a legitimate birth certificate for Obama somewhere, the one he supplied after years of hiding it at great legal cost (millions), is officially determined to be a poor amateur forgery.

2. That the Draft Card Obama has released is also a poor amateur forgery, and how it was forged from a 2008 postal stamp to fake a 1980 stamp.

3. That according to the Federal Government, Obama’s Social Security number is a fake.

4. That Obama used that same Fake Social Security number on his taxes and for the Selective Service database.

5. As Sheriff Arpaio has said, anyone else would be arrested for using forged documents in this case, but Obama has not.

6. Almost all news companies in America are censoring this evidence from the American people.

Larry Klayman of Freedom Watch, on Oct. 2, filed a “Petition to Commence Deportation Hearings against Barack Hussein Obama for his Removal from the United States” with the Dept. of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services. The Petition can be seen @: http://www.freedomwatchusa.org/pdf/141002-ObamaDeportationPetition.pdf It is 22 pages of evidence and applicable law, plus the legal request. The Petition presents evidence and alleges Obama may NOT have been born in the US, Departed the US, was adopted by an Indonesian and became an Indonesian, re-entered the US using fraudulent documents, never correctly applied to obtain US citizenship, and was still sometimes claiming Indonesian citizenship and using an Indonesian passport after age 18. Using a fraudulent document (birth certificate) even if a real one exists is still a crime.

The petition requests, “the Department must convene a hearing and conduct an investigation.”, and states 21 items that include specifics to be investigated, documents subpoenaed, and persons to testify. If this investigation is conducted, I believe it will prove that Barry Soetoro (Obama) has committed many crimes against US laws and probably is not eligible for any US citizenship, much less “Natural Born Citizen” to be President. He may not be deported, but certainly must face trials and imprisonment. I hope that this will force Congress and/or the Supreme Court to clarify the meaning of “natural born Citizen” and stop the chatter. Hopefully, they might even rule that 14th Amendment citizenship is only available to those born in the US “under the jurisdiction of US law” as stated, not those criminal invaders here in defiance of US law. Minor Federal activist judges have perverted US law and the history of law for political and ideological ends. Impeachment should be used much more often to enforce Constitutional Law.

I can only add that this administration is not only incompetent, but is actually hostile to our country and our economy. Why that is, I leave to the Readers to understand.
