Seadrift – Leroy Key, 84, of Seadrift passed away March 6, 2014. He was born December 14, 1929 in Port Lavaca to the late Robert E. and Myrtle Ann Key. He worked for Brown and Root and was also a Shrimper. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Seadrift and served in the US Air Force.

Back in the day Leroy was known for his athletic prowess on the football field and was called The Southwest Terror of the backfield. He played at Port Lavaca High School, Victoria Jr. College where he set 7 records and for the United States Air Force at Scott AFB, Illinois.

He was a lover of country, bluegrass and gospel music and played four different instruments; the guitar, banjo, dobro and violin. He played for many charitable events, stage shows, nursing homes and his church.

He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman and shared that love with his sons and grandchildren. He was also a jack of all trades and could build most anything including cabins and boats to contraptions of all kinds. A lot of those traits were passed on to his sons and grandsons.

He loved his family and was very proud of their accomplishments. He will be missed.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Key of Seadrift; sons, Bobby Key (Ethelene) of Seadrift, Martin Key (Donna) of Katy; sisters, Marjorie Yeats, Evelyn Bonnet, Ethel Matulik, Esther Boyd; grandchildren, Sheree Key Henderson (Alan), Theresa Key Loveall (Andy), Robert “Preston” Key Jr. (Roxanne), Dennis Key (Brianne), Randy Key (Corei), Brandon Key (Brenna); great-grandchildren, Quentin, Tristan, DeeDee, Krislyn, Nicole, Jaxson, Kate, Elijah and one baby boy on the way and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services were held Monday, March 10, 2014 at the Assembly of God in Seadrift with Pastor Tim Smith officiating. Interment followed in Seadrift Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Brandon Key, Randy Key, Dennis Key, Preston Key, Alan Henderson and Andy Loveall.

Honorary Pallbearers are Gordon Beatty, Jerry Amason, Larry Key, Kenneth Kemp, Marcus Blevins and Billy Bullman.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
