Calhoun Air Center held it’s annual Kid’s Day on May 2nd. Kid’s Day is a field trip in which local sixth graders visit Calhoun County Airport. The students and volunteers look forward to this event each year, approximately 350 students from Travis Middle School and Seadrift School learned about aviation and aeronautics.

There were a number of aircraft which the students learned about; a Cessna 172 Skyhawk, Cirrus SR22, AirTractor, Beechcraft Premier, Eurocopter EC120, and a Redbird TD2 Flight Simulator. Each were set up as an individual station. The Calhoun County Fire Department was also in attendance.

The pilots at each station addressed issues such as; the differences between an airplane and helicopter, fuel management, aerodynamics, wind components, wind velocity, crop dusting and even air racing!

The students were also given information about how to join the AOPA AV8RS program which was set to instill the love of flying as a lifelong passion, while providing the resources and tools necessary for participants to advance in the world of aviation as far as their desire, skills, and hard work may take them. The program offers members knowledge about the latest aviation technologies, events, scholarship opportunities, and more.

“Our event at the Calhoun County Airport never fails to delight me with the level of interest the kids have for aviation,” said Dianna Stanger, Calhoun Airport Manager. “It is a very satisfying day for each of our volunteers and participants.”
