For several years, the late Henry Barber, Director of Calhoun County Emergency Medical Services, dreamed of and worked toward establishing an EMS station in the Seadrift/Port O’Connor area. That dream has finally come true, and on March 1, 2018 County officials and members of our local communities celebrated with an official Ribbon Cutting of the Calhoun County EMS South Station.

Located at 6084 St. Hwy. 185 E., the EMS station has been in operation since December and has already proven its value to local residents. According to CCEMS Director Dustin Jenkins, response time to Port O’Connor has been reduced from 24 minutes to 8 minutes. These extra minutes could mean the difference between life and death.

Director Jenkins says they have had good cooperation with the local Volunteer EMS teams. The volunteers are usually first on the scene, working to stabilize the afflicted person. The County EMS team responds to each emergency with their advanced medical equipment and highly trained EMTs. They transport the patient to a Port Lavaca or Victoria hospital for treatment. In some cases, a medi-vac helicopter is summoned.
