Last year a gardening program was started as a partnership between Port O’Connor Elementary and Emilee Deforest, Extension Agent in Calhoun County. The gardening program was a great success and has continued this school year. Fifth grade students learn responsibility by planting seeds, monitoring the health of plants, and the daily care (watering, feeding, trimming, weeding and fertilizing) of the plants. In addition, students have also learned the very important skill of working together as a team.

Our first Farmer’s Market, held on November 19th, was very successful. Students interacted with the public and sold their vegetables. We sincerely appreciate those from the community who stopped by to support our fifth grade students.
