Living For Sundays by Erny McDonough

We have all faced awful days. Thankfully, most of them are not consecutive! How devastated would we be if we had three awful days in a row? That is exactly what happened to Jesus’ disciples during what we call “Passion Week” or “Holy Week”. For three and a half years, they had believed Jesus was going to overthrow the Roman government, but during that special week, they saw those dreams shattered. But, always remember what happened the first day of the next week!

Thursday, the day Jesus told them, “One of you will betray me.” It happened as they were celebrating the anniversary of their deliverance from 400 years of slavery – they were leaving Egypt and heading toward the Promised land. But before the meal was complete, Jesus began telling them that all would desert Him before the day was done. Jesus was not going to be the Ruler they expected; He was going to be executed by the hated Romans. And Jesus was right – later that very evening, Jesus was arrested and sentenced to die!

We all experience crises. Circumstances often pile up against us. Some deal with our employment, or maybe it is a serious illness. It could be relational – rejection by our spouse, or parents, or our children. Often it seems like much more than we can handle, and we think, “Tomorrow has to be better!”

Friday, the day Jesus said to all, “It is finished!” Thursday was bad, but Friday’s despair was much worse. Helplessly, the Disciples watched their Master hang in agony suspended by the nails in His hands and feet. All their eggs had been in this one basket! They had left all to follow Jesus, and now He was gone – dead!

Taking up arms against the Romans would now be senseless! Attempting to destroy the oppressors would serve no purpose! Who was going to lead them to victory – Jesus was dead! Who would rule the new kingdom – Jesus was placed in the garden cave! Their “would be” king was buried in a borrowed tomb, not even owning one of His own! Once more, evil had triumphed over good, and they were now forced to continue living and dying in captivity!

Saturday, the day Jesus was silent! Totally unknown was the future of these followers of Jesus, Who they believed to be the Christ! Do we go back to fishing? Do we return to our old lives? We thought we had a new lifestyle under the promises of Jesus – we do not want to go back, but what do we do?

Sometimes we wonder when we will find another job and if it will pay our grocery bills. We often can not feel the direction of the Lord in a mate selection or in direction for our lives. Are our children going to grow up to be good citizens? Is there going to be another “Carla” this summer? Is the car going to make it another year? We feel like we are in limbo! What are we going to do next?

Sunday, the early morning light showed Jesus’ tomb empty! Where have they moved His body? Where will we place His tombstone? We thought last Thursday, Friday, and Saturday was bad, and now the week is starting like the last week ended!

But, I believe it may have been some of the angels who announced His birth that stood by His empty tomb and reported, “Why would the living be among the dead? He is risen!” God was in control all along – the Disciples just did not know it. Death has been defeated, and Jesus was fully alive!

We can not blame the Disciples for being defeated during the most devastating three days of their lives, because they truly did not know the full meaning of Sunday! There will be times when Jesus’ disciples continue to experience crises. But these can no longer defeat them. Now we know that He Lives! Our risen Lord goes with us. In the worst situations, God has everything under His loving control. No longer do we live in uncertain limbo. We have a clear life mission – to help share the Good News of Jesus and God’s Kingdom through words and deeds. We live on “this side of Resurrection”!

Living for Sunday does not mean that we are to deny our circumstances and pretend everything is fine. We will continue experiencing stresses, despair, and times when the future is a big question mark. But, we never have to be defeated because we can see our circumstances from the perspective of Easter Sunday! God is in control of our lives and will accomplish His purpose in our lives as we allow Him!

This is why we Christians celebrate every Sunday – we treat every First Day of the Week as if it is the end of the “last three days of last week”! This is why Christians come to church on Sunday – to celebrate that circumstances do not control our lives, because we know “Sunday is on its way”! Jesus, Who triumphantly conquered death, hell, and the grave, still has the answers for our every-day lives. He continues to lead us and take care of us as He did for the Disciples in the three and a half years before Resurrection Sunday! Therefore, whether we are experiencing a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, let us live every day like it is Sunday!

Bunco: Judy Overton and Kelly Gee Cooper will be hostessing the May Bunco meeting on Tuesday, May 6th. Since the Community Center may still be occupied by the Oil Spill Response Team, Bunco will be held in the hostess room of Clark’s Inn. The fun begins at 7:00 p.m. Ladies, come join us!

My husband and I were gone for a long trip during the month of March; we were so happy to return to POC; yet returning, everything seemed so different.  But then again, that was a first impression.

H-100: I’d written about this very unusual organization as conceived by Jim Hooper, “Hoop”, of Hurricane Junction, the aim of it is to be available to step in occasionally when a resident needs additional help, to contribute to our Volunteer Fire Department and other service organizations and facilities here, to possibly help a student begin higher education that earlier seemed inaccessible.  This organization of concerned members keeps growing; and one family has entered their 4-legged friend too.  For further information and how to be of assistance, contact Hoop; he’ll be happy to be of assistance.

Have you noticed the replacement for the Port Motel on Commerce Street between 14th & 15th?  Currently, the contractor is in the process of completion of 5 townhouses, all painted in a Southern Florida-Caribbean colors.

Friday, April 25th marks the Friends of the Library of POC’s Spaghetti Dinner. Planned to be held at the Community Center, the location will change to our Elementary School if our Center is still occupied. This dinner is being staged as a chance for the Friends to explain to our community-at-large the plans and possible design of the planned Library-Learning Center.  Beginning promptly at 6:00 p.m. for dinner service, all residents are invited to come and enjoy a luscious Italian Pasta dinner.  It will be served with a choice of a hearty meat sauce or a vegetarian sauce on lightly seasoned pasta al dente and a crispy green salad with Italian Garden vinaigrette and crunchy rolls.  Dessert to follow with a choice of beverages.  After the serving of food, a program is planned to introduce members of the Friends of the Library and other important guests with a video to be played featuring plans for our new Library-Learning Center. Donations will be happily accepted, and all funds will go into the building fund for our Library.

Despite the unwelcome oil to our waters, we’ve been told that most of the volunteers will be gone prior to the 1st of May when the sand sculptors arrive to prepare for Warriors’ Weekend.  I’m looking forward once again to reacquainting with Gloria Fric, the Dragon Lady, who designs the sculptures and works with all the artists.  And the weekend honoring so many returning veterans will begin on Friday, May 16, 2014.  Further information available in the Dolphin Talk.

One of the hassles of not being 20 or 30 years of age any more is the distinct possibility of injury to a leg or ankle.  Having been blessed with injuries to both legs, when the weather appears to change with a barometer drop, my knees hurt! And I struggle to walk in the morning with my four-legged friend.  HOWEVER, I’ve discovered that rubbing the aching knees with WD-40 helps; it doesn’t completely alleviate the pain, but it sure helps.  Oh, and WD-40 is also great for removing the bugs from the windshield!  Not that the two uses are completely compatible!

I welcome any correspondence from any organization regarding their current happenings for information to add to this column.  Also welcome any remarks from our readers, good or otherwise.  I enjoy so much writing this column of happenings, hope you all enjoy reading it!

Republican Club Hosts Justice Eva Guzman by Rita Miller

Pictured at the Calhoun County Republican Club March meeting, left to right: Russell Cain, Calhoun County Republican Party Chairman; Rita Poimbeauf, President of the Republican Club; and Justice of the Texas Supreme Court, Eva Guzman.

Near the door at the Calhoun County Republican Club meeting, I nervously awaited the arrival of Justice Eva Guzman and her husband, Houston Police Sergeant Antonio Ray Guzman. Although the club has had wonderful speakers who hold roles of importance in our government, we had never been graced with the presence of a Texas Supreme Court Justice before. I had conjured up all kinds of things to worry about.

Soon, the attractive couple entered quietly with genuine smiles and met the members of our club with an air of easy confidence. Gone were my concerns because the Justice before us who could have been stuffy, arrogant or aloof was instead warm, gracious and witty.

She talked only a bit about herself and instead spoke of her family and especially of her admiration for her parents who immigrated from Mexico to make a good life for them and the family they planned to have. Justice Guzman was raised along with six siblings with her parents’ strong family values of faith, family and freedom. It was natural that she grew up Republican and she exuded the wisdom and tenacity as a young attorney that drew notice from Governor Perry who appointed her to fill an unexpired term on the Texas Supreme Court in 2009. It was not long before she had to run for election to hold her place on the court and that was a very foreign idea to her. She looked around at our group and smiled fondly as she recalled aloud how Republican Women groups embraced her and helped her through her first campaign. Then I knew why she traveled over two hours after work to meet with our small group – she respects us for what we do. The feeling is mutual.

In business matters, President Rita Poimbeauf announced that the Calhoun County Republican Club raised funds to award three scholarships to deserving students of Calhoun County.

Seadrift Police Make More Meth Arrests

While patrolling during the very early morning hours, Seadrift Police Officer James Walther and Reserve Officer Lewis Warren noticed a suspicious vehicle driving fast down neighborhood streets. When the officers turned to get closer to the vehicle they also noticed that it was trying to loose the officer on the neighborhood streets.

As the Seadrift Police unit would turn to get closer to the suspect vehicle, the vehicle would continue to turn trying to loose the officer, and in what would become a game of cat and mouse, was making the officers even more suspicious of the vehicle, as officers would drive on a block parallel to the suspect vehicle, the suspect vehicle would turn until it disappeared.

Officers almost immediately found the vehicle hiding behind a large bush in a driveway where it was known to officers to not belong. As the family inside the home were not acquaintances, officers immediately turned on their spot lights, approached the vehicle and ordered two suspects out and to the front of their patrol unit. The officers noticed that the suspect vehicle was the same vehicle seen at a known drug house earlier and started to question the suspects. When officers asked for identification, the driver gave a false name and date of birth, Officers soon discovered the true identity of the driver and the passenger was found to not have a driver license but did have an out-of-state ID.

A search of the suspect vehicle found a large quantity of white crystal substance that field tested to be methamphetamine. Other drugs were also found.
Both suspects were arrested and transported to Calhoun County jail by Seadrift officers, The suspects vehicle was impounded and towed.

This is the fourth drug arrest of the year and the 14th drug arrest since last year, and several vehicles have been impounded. If you have drugs in your vehicle, you are going to lose it! And if you have drugs in your home and you have children there, not only will you be arrested, but Texas Child Protective Services will be notified. You have a responsibility, not only to your children, but also to the community, to see that your children are in a safe environment.

If you have information on illegal activities in the community, feel free to talk to me anytime as all information is confidential.
