March 16, 1964, was a cold, windy day when a scared, high school student walked into a room filled with older preachers to present himself as a candidate for an “Exhorter’s Permit”. The room was at the end of the Catoosa Football Field, where he had played Junior High and Senior High ball. The building was so close to the goal posts that it was not uncommon for a field goal to hit the church roof. He felt “the call to preach” since shortly after being saved at age 14 at that Catoosa Church, which was not his church home. Timber Ridge was where he attended. Now he faced a Superintendent, Presbyter, and several Committeemen who would judge him “worthy” or “still lacking”. He knew he had a lot to learn, but also had been preaching for “close to two years”. There was one very familiar face among those he faced: his Pastor Baker was there, and the lad was certain that he would speak well of him. After a very short opening statement, and answering only one question, the young man walked outside and sat on a cold, metal folding chair to await the decision. Time seemed to stand still as he waited the minute or two before he was called to stand before the Board and hear that they too believed that God had called him to preach and was granting the “Exhorter’s Permit” that he sought. He would have to promise to read “Bible Doctrines” by P.C. Nelson, pass the test, and begin immediately the prescribed reading courses to qualify him for “Licenses to Preach”. Exactly one year later, on March 16, 1965, that same high school student was granted his “Licenses to Preach” because he had fulfilled those requirements and more. I remember these events so well because I was that student. However, when I was “old enough”, I was ordained and after my formal education and a hitch with Uncle Sam, I entered full time ministry which has brought me to Port O’Connor. I trust I will never forget that God has called me, others have confirmed that calling, and now I must fulfill that calling!

Recently, 15 men and boys traveled to Smiley for a few days of Retreat. It was a very special event as each participant who spoke at the Chapel told of special memories they made while there. There were tales of rabbit hunts, raccoon kills, and of seeing wild hogs. There were horse shoe games, target and skeet shooting, and riding of a four-wheeler and golf cart. There was a lot of food eaten, some tent sleeping, and a special time of testimonies around the open camp fire. When we do it again, we will let other men know so they too can enjoy this special time.

The Chapel has been given a new baby grand piano by the Peters family. This piano graced the home of Dick and Ellen Peters in Huntsville. Before Ellen passed recently, the piano was given to the Chapel. To memorialize this special gift, a Dedicatory Service will be held on Sunday, March 23, during the 11:00 a.m. service. Members of the Peters family will be in attendance for the congregation to express their appreciation for this special gift. The Chapel recently donated their antique baby grand to a Victoria church. All are welcomed to attend this special activity at the Chapel.

Captain Robert will be teaching another Captain’s School at the Chapel beginning March 21. Those interested should contact Captain Robert at 361/816-3010 as soon as possible. The next class is scheduled to begin on May 2.

Get reading for the Chapel’s annual Chili Cook-Off. This year the event will be following the morning service on March 30. We will be honoring Pat Prather’s birthday during this event. We are currently searching for new judges, since for the past many, many years the judges have declared Pastor Erny’s chili was the proud owner of “last place”! I did figure out last year how to make sure that some of my chili did better – I entered two pots of chili, since only one could be judged “the worst chili”! Anyone who will help Pastor out of these bad past losses should contact him as soon as possible so he can interview them to see if they will truly help him out! It will be a fun event and everyone is welcomed to come and join in!

The Chapel Ladies will have a special “waffle breakfast” at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, March 22. This will be a time of inspiration and fellowship and every lady is invited to attend.

With all the events of this month, Friday Night Youth will meet only on March 14 and March 28. Julian, Alissa and Zach encourage all this community’s youth to come for an evening of fun, food, and fellowship. They meet from 7:00 until 10:00 p.m. at the Chapel.

Fisherman’s Chapel is an interdenominational congregation dedicated to service this community by spreading the Good News that Jesus is the answer for today and tomorrow! You will always find a warm welcome here, and are urged to, “Come, grow with us!”

Several of our church members with the Port O’Connor Lions Club, joined with many others for a fantastic Arts and Crafts Show this past weekend at the Community Center. This was a great show and attracted many people. The Lions Club is to be congratulated on this fine event.

Eight of our church members attended the Spring Retreat for Senior Adults at Camp Zephyr last week. This beautiful camp is located on the banks of Lake Corpus Christi, near Mathis, Texas. This four day retreat offers the finest in Bible Study by Dr. Jimmy Arnold, whose subject this year was “the Rapture of the Church”, “the Seven Years of Tribulation”, “the Millennial Reign of Christ” and “Eternity”. Wow! Dr. Arnold kept you on the edge of your seat! Special music was supplied by Marcos and Sue Gohlke. Our pastor, Donnie Martin and Shirley Martin sang a beautiful song. George Yarbrough inspired everyone with his devotions. Preaching was done by the pastor of The Cowboy Church. Everyone enjoyed the newly refinished motel rooms, and the food at each of the three daily meals was fabulous. The Fall Senior Retreat will be September 22-25 and everyone is invited to make reservations. The cost is $100 per person for all meals and lodging.

The New “Team Kids” and the Church Youth meet each Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. The “Team Kids” are made up of children in the first to fifth grades and they are enjoying “Jumping the Hurdles” program. The Youth, grades 6 through 12, meet separately. Renee Hawes and Candice Stryker are in charge of this outstanding program.

The Church is having a “Fund Drive” to purchase a Church Van to replace our 1998 Dodge van. Our van is doing it’s job, but is in need of a replacement. Contributions are welcomed!

See you in Church Sunday!

The Banner of His Love by Rev. Donnie L. Martin

“Years ago, in days when a country’s flag still stood for something, an Anglo-American was traveling abroad and had the misfortune to be seized by extremists who held him hostage under threat of death. An American and a British consul asked to see the prisoner as a prelude to negotiations. At a favorable moment the British consul stepped forward and threw the British flag over the prisoner, and the American did the same with the Stars and Stripes. ‘Now then,’ they said, ‘fire on those flags if you dare.’”1

Many years ago, as a teenager, I found myself captured by my sinful nature and its depravity. A ruthless and horrible taskmaster it was to me. All looked bleak, for I was under the sentence of death, “for the wages of sin is death…” (Rom. 6:23a). I was powerless in and of myself to effect my release, because I was “yet without strength” (Rom. 5:6a). All looked hopeless from where I stood; defeated, downcast, and powerless.

However, one day a man named Jesus, Who was of kingly stature and kindly demeanor, walked into my prison and wanted to see me. While the Accuser, who stood near by, accosted me, recounting my crimes and failures, suddenly Jesus stepped forward and threw over me the “Banner of the Cross,” for His “…banner over me was love” (Song of Solomon 2:4b). With victory in His voice, and defiance in His eyes, Jesus said to my captor, “Fire upon this banner at your own peril, for ‘there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus…’ (Rom. 8:1a). Oh what joy, what rejoicing was mine as I claimed those words by faith.

Now with unrestrained praise I sing:

There’s a royal banner given for display/ To the soldiers of the King;/ As an ensign fair we lift it up today,/ While as ransomed ones we sing./ Marching on, marching on,/ For Christ count everything but loss!/ And to crown Him King, we’ll toil and sing,/ ‘Neath the banner of the cross!2

Cooking With G… Chili

Posted by Joyce Rhyne on 20 Mar 14 - 0 Comments

Greetings fellow culinary enthusiasts! There is much discussion about how to make chili, which probably explains why there are so many “chili cook offs”. Being from South Texas, I am under the impression that “chili” should not include beans but I can tell you from experience that people like beans. I have spent countless hours roasting, pureeing, and pushing chili peppers through a sieve only to lose to someone with a can opener. With this recipe you probably won’t place in the next “chili cook off” but you will be a winner with your family and friends.

Brown 1 pound of 85/15 ground beef in a large pot over medium heat. Then add 2 cups of water, 1 can of chili style tomatoes, and 1 can of chili beans. Add salt, pepper, and chili powder to taste. If you want a thick chili, whisk in a slurry of 2 Tablespoons corn starch to 4 Tablespoons water.

Serve with cornbread. Jiffy is probably as good as homemade and it is cheap. Approximate cooking time for chili is 30 minutes and serves 4 to 6 people. If you put the Jiffy mix in a cast iron skillet, no one will know the difference.
