Agnes Valigura Sept. 17, 1922- Feb. 7, 2014

The Port O Connor Community Service Club is proud to announce the 2014 Agnes Valigura Memorial Scholarship. This onetime $1,000 scholarship will be awarded from proceeds from our 2014 garage sale funds in honor and memory of the incredible and unselfish life of our friend and club member Agnes Marion Munsch Valigura.

Agnes lived joyfully to the age of 91, proud to say she was Port O’Connor born and bred. She attended school in the old wooden school building before it burned down. She grew up in “the Port O’Connor that was,” she used to say. She was vitally active in our community and would always be the smiling face and willing hand at any event. She held offices and committee positions for the Service Club, was part of the Altar Guild at St. Joseph’s, was a lifelong Chamber member, made oral and pictorial contribution to the history project currently under development, worked in local businesses and was our Postmaster for many years. It seems only fitting to honor her in such a way.

Port O’Connor students interested in this scholarship need to complete the application available from the CHS counselors’ office and write a letter to the Port O’Connor Community Service Club detailing their academic achievements, educational goals and college plans and giving a short explanation of why they deserve this special scholarship. The Service Club Scholarship committee is excited to honor Agnes in this way, and pleased to help a local graduate achieve their future dreams.

Agnes would be so pleased.

Calhoun County Republican Club (CCRC) is pleased to present Justice Eva Guzman of the Supreme Court of Texas as guest speaker on Monday, April 7, 2014. Justice Guzman was appointed to her position in 2009 by Governor Rick Perry and has since been recognized by many law and community organizations for her service on and off the bench. She was named one of the “101 Most Influential Latino Leaders” by Latino Leaders magazine, a national publication; two law-enforcement organizations, P.O.L.I.C.E., Inc. and Houston Police Officers Union, have selected Justice Guzman as “Appellate Judge of the Year”; Texas Executive Women presented Justice Guzman with a “Woman on the Move” award in recognition of her professional and civic accomplishments; the Hispanic National Bar Association honored Justice Guzman as “Latina Judge of the Year”; and The Mexican American Bar Association of Texas Foundation also has recognized Justice Guzman for her many contributions and awarded her its “2009 Judge of the Year award”.

Before taking the bench, Justice Guzman enjoyed a successful 10-year career in private law practice. She holds a B.B.A. from the University of Houston and a law degree from South Texas College of Law. Though born in Chicago, Justice Guzman grew up in Houston and has been a resident for more than 35 years. She and her husband, Houston Police Sergeant Tony Guzman, have one daughter, Melanie Alexis.

The public is invited to attend the CCRC meeting on April 7, 2014, at the Grace Episcopal Church, 213 E. Austin, Port Lavaca. Dinner will be served at 5:00 pm at a cost of $7.00 and reservations are recommended by calling 552-6080. The meeting begins at 6:00 pm.

Chris Cobler, editor of the Victoria Advocate and a board member of the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas, spoke at the Calhoun County Republican Club on March 3, 2014. Cobler spoke of the value of the Freedom of Information Act and its enforcement, and fielded questions about the Victoria Advocate. (Pictured with CCRC President Rita Poimbeauf)
