Update on Port O Connor burglaries! Sheriff Aleman reported this week (April 1) that two persons have been arrested and incarcerated awaiting judicial process. Several others have warrants issued for them by the Sheriff’s Department and will be arrested for the series of burglaries in Port O Connor. Sheriff Aleman sends thanks to the citizens for their patience while his department has been investigating the crimes culminating in the arrests and warrants. More information will be posted to the portoconnorwatch.com website as it becomes available.

The portoconnorwatch.com formation meeting on the 23rd of March was a great success with many citizens joining the Watch effort. The web site will be the basis for our communications with all members and soon be operational. Donations have been received to purchase street signs for the “Watch” program and will be erected soon all around the community. Membership in portoconnorwatch.com is free as are watch decals for your home to those who join. Membership applications may be picked up at the Dolphin Talk office, 2232 Monroe.

portoconnorwatch.com was developed out of concern for the recent crime spree in POC. Our well attended meetings have created a renewed awareness within the county government that our community cares deeply about maintaining Port O’Connor as a great, safe place to live, one that is free of burglaries, home break-ins and related criminal activity.

Join the effort of watching out, reporting and being kept informed of suspicious activity in your neighborhood. We all want more Sheriff Patrol Deputies for Port O Connor and support that effort, however the eyes and ears of law abiding citizens reporting to the Sheriff’s Department has been proven tremendously effective in crime prevention, detection and conviction. Join your neighbors and sign up to WATCH! Membership is completely free and includes access to a website that will post all current information regarding criminal activity in our community. Be informed and be a good neighbor.

CUT IT LOOSE by Sue Kubecka

As you travel down Monroe and approach the Elementary School, a small blue building catches your eye at the corner of 5th Street and Monroe. Adjoining the building is a sign denoting the usage of it, the “CUT IT LOOSE” Hair Salon. Exploring a little further and after making a very necessary telephone call, one reaches Julissa Lopez, the proprietor of the Salon. After making an appointment for a hair cut, the fun begins.

Upon entering the shop, one finds an interior with lively colored walls, a good sized area for washing and conditioning hair, two chairs for cutting and coloring and perming, and a comfortable area with not just many bottles of subtlety colored nail polish but a stand of handmade jewelry for sale.

Julissa is an expert when it comes to working with hair, both fine and curly. She is able to not just put scissors to the strands of hair, but to make it take on a life of its own that will enhance the subject. Her sense of color is impeccable and she is able to design the correct color to conform to the person’s complexion and makeup and make the overall image prettier. When it comes to wanting a style with more curls and body, Julissa is there to offer the perm. But fun for her is the aim of Cut Color Curl, and she accomplishes that with each appointment.

Julissa Lopez is a native of Port O’Connor, the daughter of Freda Ragusin and Gary Crone and the granddaughter of Billy and Margaret Ragusin. Julissa attended school here and then went to Port Lavaca to finish her schooling. Following high school and urged by a close friend, Julissa entered Beauty College in Victoria and graduating in 2001, found her calling; the ability to bring out the true beauty of a person. And, Julissa does not just cut hair for females, but for her many gentlemen clients as well.

After marrying Gabriel Lopez, the owner of Deadwood Customs, a home remodeling, and repairing company that features the ability to design for those services, Julissa worked at various shops in Port Lavaca before Lyric, a beautiful and sparkling 5 year old joined them. And later, Daphne, a very unusual, curly black Shizu made her appearance. Daphne is also the mascot of the Elementary School and hangs out there daily.

Cut It Loose is currently being operated on a “call for appointment” basis, but Julissa is planning that in September, when Lyric will be in school for more hours, to have the shop opened from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. As for now, just call Julissa at 361 550-1100 for an appointment; you won’t be disappointed.

Seadrift City Council Meets

Seadrift City Council held its regular monthly meeting on April 2, with Mayor Pro-Tem Robert Chatham presiding. Reports were heard from the Police, Building Inspector, Municipal Court and Planning Commission.

Police Chief Leonard Bermea reported 230 calls for service were received during March. There were four arrests: two for warrants, one disorderly conduct, and one Driving with Invalid License. Officers made 97 traffic stops resulting in 12 citations and 75 warnings. Chief Bermea introduced Sgt. James Walther and Officer Justin Klare to the Council and citizens in attendance.

Building Inspector Boyd Staloch said March was a slow month, with only five permits issued, valued at about $50,000.

Municipal Court Judge Madrigal, who was sworn in on March 4, introduced himself to the audience and remarked that he has found Seadrift a most friendly community. He reported that 16 court cases had been closed; there were seven new cases, bringing the number of current cases to 68.

Speaking for the Planning Commission, Cindy Alford asked the Council if they could provide better defined rules and regulations for RVs. Ms. Alford, a local real estate agent, said that she and other agents have not been able to provide satisfactory information to prospective property buyers on this subject. She requested a public workshop be held to clarify the RV rules. Council agreed that such a workshop will be set up soon.

A representative from Axis Demolition delivered final EPA paperwork to the Council and was paid for the recent clean up of the Harbor. 1,300 old tires were removed from City Harbor and delivered to Bay City and Corpus Christi for recycling.

Sig and Roxanne Wolf, who own a Harbor lease, addressed the Council and assembled citizens concerning his Second Street Lighthouse Project. He has just received the permit for seawall and bulkhead work that he applied for in September of 2012. He answered many questions that have been addressed to him concerning this project, showing photos and illustrations to demonstrate the planned improvements.

The final item on the agenda was authorizing a change order for 70 additional feet of 6” water line and repair of 30 additional shell leaks to the North ground water storage tank. Council approved this $3,915.00 and the third payment of $48,296.07 to Falcon Lease Operating Co. for this ground storage water tank project, which is approximately two-thirds complete.

The next regular meeting of Seadrift City Council will be held Tuesday, May 7 at 7:00 p.m. at Seadrift City Hall. All Seadrift citizens and interested persons are welcomed to attend.

Election for three Council positions will be held on May 11. Early voting at City Hall will be from April 29 though May 7.
