Brazil
Charles and Julie Champlin

Wrapped in God’s care, armed with fortitude, and sent out with a lot of prayer, missionaries Charles and Julie Champlin live in Boa Vista, Brazil. Boa Vista is in north central Brazil. Charles and Julie work with the Wai-wai people. A lot of their work has been with Bible translation and reaching into the hearts and lives of the people around them.

Seadrift’s First Baptist Church hosted Charles and Julie at their Sunday evening service on September 24th. People in the congregation listened attentively as Charles and Julie took turns explaining the work that has been done in Brazil. They have been in Brazil for 26 years! As Julie stated, “When God calls you to a people group to share the Gospel, He gives you a love for them.”

Charles and Julie have four grown children. The youngest, Heidi Corporon, is the wife of Seadrift’s First Baptist Pastor Aaron Corporon. -Tanya DeForest

Letter to the Editor:

As a winner of several Boat Parade awards in years past, it has come to my attention that I have been the subject of salacious accusations in the POC social media and local watering holes. Such allegations suggest that such winnings were the result of having relations with one of the judges. This letter is to implore those story tellers to put down their Ranch Water and join me in entering a boat in this year’s Boat Parade!

Let’s all support those individuals who work hard to make the annual Toy Run and Boat Parade a great success. Having a record turnout for both of those events will greatly aid these individuals in achieving their primary goal: To collect as many new toys as possible so that they can then be distributed by the Angel Tree Program to needy children all along the Texas coast. Please consider participating in the Toy Run, entering a boat in the parade, and contributing new toys to the Angel Tree Program.

Hope to see you at the captain’s meeting!

Dolphin Talk,

On the night of Sept. 15, I watched out of my window some oddball weather. It was lightening in the north heavy, then it moved across the eastern sky to the south. At times it looked like the sky in the east was on fire.
Very odd weather.

Editor’s Note:

Dry Thunderstorms can occur when there is little moisture near the surface. In such cases, the rain evaporates before reaching the ground, resulting in no rainfall.
However, lightning can still occur within the storm clouds, generating visible flashes of light without accompanying rain or audible thunder
.
Thankfully, since this writing, we have received some much-needed rain.

OCTOBER CLAY SHOOT CANCELED! Unfortunately, there was not enough support for our second annual Clay Shoot fundraiser and it had to be canceled. This was very disappointing because we are getting close to reaching our second goal of $75,000.00 for the update on the main community center building.

The flooring and counter tops will be going in soon in the building, so we can begin to see some results from all the hard work that has gone into raising this money.

Work on the Pavilion cannot begin until late November when outside activities will be over for the year. Once that begins, it should go quickly providing weather cooperates. January and February aren’t usually known for bright, sunshiny days! Maybe we will be lucky in 2024.

Please consider supporting the Facelift Project on this very important community asset. Be a part of insuring that these buildings will last long into the future. Donations can be made at First National Bank in POC or on PayPal. -Diane Cooley

We can finally really tell that fall is here! And we have been blessed with some much needed rain! Cooler days and rain; who could ask for more?

So many activities are taking place at FBC this month and next. Come and be part of them. There is always room for more smiling faces. It is almost time to turn in the Samaritan’s Purse Christmas shoe boxes for distribution to underprivileged children around the world. We work on filling them all year with small gifts, school supplies and toiletries, etc. Our goal this year is to fill 200 boxes. If you would like to be part of this very important ministry, we will meet each Wednesday , for the next 4 weeks, at 9:00 a.m. in the sanctuary building to work on them.

Our men’s and women’s Bible studies are both in full swing now. The men meet at 7:00 p.m. on each Tuesday in the Fellowship Hall and just started studying the book of Titus. They welcome new participants any time. The ladies are half way through their study on worshipping God on Tuesdays at 4:00 p.m. They also welcome anyone who would like to join them.

TEAM KIDS is attracting new first through fifth graders each week. This past Wednesday evening was the second monthly family dinner. The second Wednesday of every month FBC welcomes the families of our children for food and fellowship. The children like to show off some of what they learn each week and enjoy dinner with their families. If you have or know of a child in this age group, call the church for details of how to enroll them.

If you haven’t already marked your calendars for POC Community Thanksgiving, now is the time. Sunday ,November 12, 2023, will be here before you know it! This year it will be held at FBC at 6:00 p.m. This is such a special time for our community’s citizens, weekenders and visitors. Don’t miss it.

Remember that we have a full week of activities for young and not so young. Sundays at 10:00 a.m. is Sunday School. At 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. we have church services. Tuesdays are Bible Studies for men and women. Wednesdays, FBC hosts all youth from first grade through fifth for TEAM KIDS and sixth through twelfth grade for Youth Activities. Thursday is the new time for Prayer Meetings at 6:00 p.m. FBC is waiting to welcome all who want to take part in any of these functions. If you can’t attend, watch the Sunday Services on the FBC Facebook page. Call the church at 361-983-2727 if you need more information

Fish Out of Water by Thomas Spychalski…

It’s spooky season again, but this year I’m thinking that the scariest thing is how many people I know that are really struggling, how many are a missed paycheck away from some really horrible outcomes, how many cannot meet basic needs, how many are right now facing a horror story worse than any ghost, goblin, or vampire.

I have loved this stupid weird holiday since I was a little kid.

My birthday was just a bit before it (the 19th), so the decorations going up meant that my birthday was close as well and then after dressing up like some creepy creature or another and stomping around the neighborhood getting all the free candy a pillow case could carry.

Today I feel the monsters are the everyday struggles, the feeling of terror or dread that even as bad as it is now, it could be much, much worse if a couple more things fell out of place.

These are the monsters of adults, none of your clanking chains or chilly fingers.

If your health has any issues, that too can be scarier than what is at the top of the stairs in the dark, and medical procedures like a colonoscopy or a scan can seem more like torture than anything in the latest ‘Saw’ film.

Maybe that is why I and others love Halloween so much, it is a safe space to be scared and also scary in, a way to feel the emotions and adrenaline of the darker side of things without actually being in any real danger.

It shows us facing fears in a way that is more entertaining than terrifying, and of course safe because there is no safety switch for the adult monsters.

However, we can learn to fight those monsters like the protagonists fight the forces of darkness in all those old films.

We can use knowledge like the torches used on Frankenstein’s Monster, using the information to light the path ahead of us, we can wear rings of positivity and kindness like rings of garlic against psychic vampires, or we can grab hold of the Mummy’s bandages and unravel our hang ups and problems if we dare.

Far be it from me to argue with a man with a history as important as Franklin D Roosevelt, but I think there are things to fear besides fear itself, while still taking on what he meant.

Real world consequences abound if we are not aware and actively campaigning against those adult monsters, but we should not fear them but perhaps embrace them as part of ourselves.

A wonderful woman who I have much respect for recently told me to embrace my demons, give them a hug and make them a part of me proper, like a long lost son finding his real family again.

This I feel was not only the purpose of Roosevelt’s famous quote as well as all the horror stories as old as time…to not only fight your monsters but also to ride and embrace the fear they represent because it is only by conquering them all we can get to the part of the story where the monsters are gone and the sun shines again.
