On Friday, May 11, Port O’Connor MUD had the 30-cubic yard roll-off bin at 16th and Harrison for MUD customers to dump large household items. The bin opened at 8:00 a.m. and was completely filled at noon and it was necessary to close the bin. Twenty-two MUD customers took advantage of the bin at that time.

The next WM bin will be at 16th and Harrison on Saturday, July 14 and will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or until completely filled. Remember, this is for home owner customers only, not for commercial disposal.

BUNCO: Hey, Bunco is gonna be Tuesday, June 5th, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the back meeting room of the Community Center, and we will be in for a fun evening with some delicious foods. We welcome all interested women on that evening; if you are new to our area, this is a good way to meet others. And if playing Bunco is something you’ve never had time for, well, you will certainly enjoy yourself, so come check us out. You could go home a winner too! Call Shirley Gordon at the Library for further information, 983-4365.

The Service Club and its POC History Book Committee are still searching for a picture of the ranch house on the LaSalle Ranch preferably back in the 40’s. If anyone has a photo in their possession or knows of someone who does, and will lend it to be copied, please contact either Chairman, Sue Kubecka, 798-0560 or our President, Janet Johnson, 983-4737. Additionally, we are currently concentrating on the decade of the 40’s and the changes that evolved in this community as brought by the Second World War. Please give either Sue Kubecka or Janet Johnson a call if you were here during that period and could share your experiences with us. We look forward to speaking with you. HOWEVER, if you wish to have a page in the book with a history of your family, we really need your help in writing your history; please contact either Sue or Janet concerning this.

Unfortunately, we missed the 6th Wounded Warriors Weekend as we were in Biloxi and then on to Florida to celebrate our grandson’s entry into Nuclear Studies with the Navy in Chicago. However, I understand more and more members of the military took part in this celebration. But how can we continue to forget and dishonor those who served our Nation in Viet Nam during the 60’s?

Before we left I went down to the Community Center to speak with the “Dragon Lady”, the incredible sculptress who designs and sculpts those stunning displays. Did you see her gratitude block to our residents for the assistance she and her fellow artists have been given by those of us in POC? It was amazing!

I’m exiting once again my year of working with the students at our School and can never thank the incredible and caring teaching staff and Mrs. Strakos for permitting me several hours of total enjoyment with the kids. Just hope I was of some help!

Our thanks to the POC Service Club for purchasing the flags and erecting them along the highway of 185 to 1289. Our definite thanks to the husbands whom I saw putting them up. Also thanks to the members of the Service Club to once again providing desserts for the Saturday Night BBQ dinner. I heard of one member who returned on Friday from being out of town to bake 3 cakes. Devotion? Or just community dedication?

Just saw the listing of Fishing Tournaments for this year! Wow! Lucky me, though, I have a front row seat of the participants and visitors of POCO! With my camera too!

Understand that the widening of 1289 will be starting soon from 238 to 185 with the construction of a new bridge and the entrances at Monkey Slough. Guess we’ll have to find a new route to Port Lavaca for shopping. But maybe our PL correspondent can provide more info!

Notice all the boats out on Mother’s Day? Guess the Mothers all wanted a well deserved day to themselves. Just hope the guys planned on cooking their fish or would stop at Jocelyn’s or Cathy’s on their way home. And Jocelyn’s makes an incredible Reuben Sandwich!

Hey, POC Service Club members: Don’t forget that there will be only one meeting in June: on Thursday, June 7th at 10:00 a.m. See you there!

The Reading Program will be starting soon at the Library; do check our paper for more info re dates! Or call Shirley!

See that Hoop at Hurricane Junction is once again hosting the entrants for another Fishing Tournament. He has planned some super activities for the fishermen and accompaniments during Cula Roja in July!

This is now the middle of May and visitors are coming into the RV parks to spend a month or two. We welcome you to our neighborhood, but please treat ours like yours. We have an excellent Library, 3 boat ramps and a beautiful front beach to picnic on.

Why is it that moving is one of my least desired chores. Particularly for someone who has lived in 3 states in 5 months during 1 year! It seems there is always another box or container to unpack or another drawer to redo at least 1 month later!!!!

Memorial Day May 28

Remember on Memorial Day
A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life wrote a blank check payable to
“The United States of America” for an amount “up to and including his life.”

A boy went to war in 1914 and left his bike chained to a small tree.
He never made it home, and his family left the bike by the tree
in his memory. This is that tree today.

What an OUTSTANDING celebration Port O’Connor had for our “Warriors” this past weekend! A salute and a BIG THANKS to all the volunteers who worked many, many hours putting everything together. To my knowledge, not a single thing was overlooked, everything was professionally done. Behind the scenes many people assembled bags of fishing gear, baked cookies and placed them in bags to be placed on every Warrior’s bedtime pillow, Men and women were installing display flags, and men were ready in their fishing boats awaiting the Warriors. Volunteers labored professionally hour after hour on the “Sand Castles” at the Community Center. The Sheriff’s deputies and Sheriff Browning himself were there at the arrival of the Warriors. The list goes on and on of all the preparations and work volunteered by many. I was pleased to see the many signs posted “This is a Non-Alcoholic Event”. School busses were everywhere, loaded with excited students, thousands of flags were flying and if you missed this Post O’Connor event, you missed a BIG ONE! As people waited for the 14 bus loads of Warriors to arrive at Froggie’s Bait Dock, they were offered free bottles of water and free donuts and rolls, served by the many volunteers. You did not have to walk from your parked car several blocks away; there was a Golf Cart (courtesy of Calhoun Golf Car Association) ready to pick you up and take you to the arrival area. Now that’s class!

The Church experienced wonderful inspirational services this past Sunday morning and evening. Brother Donnie Martin delivered a fine message and Brother Raymond Grant led the congregational singing and gave a super children’s sermon.

Vacation Bible School is only three weeks away. The school begins on Monday, June 11 and continues through Thursday, June 14. VBS starts at 9:00 a.m. and is over at noon each day. The church van will be picking up children each day and taking them home at noon. This year’s theme is “Amazing Wonders – Aviation”. Children Pre-School through Grade 6 are invited to participate. Each day the children will attend attend a worship rally, have Bible study, learn new music, make crafts, have recreation and snacks, and learn about missions. They will encounter God’s awesome power! On Thursday of that week, the children will be treated to an “all you can eat hot dog lunch”. On Thursday evening, June 14, at 6:00 p.m., the children will have a Graduation Ceremony in front of their parents and they will demonstrate what went on during the week. Refreshments will be served.

Children’s Summer Camp will be June 18-21 at Palacios Baptist Encampment. Children in Grade 3 through Grade 6 will depart Port O’Connor on Monday, June 18 and return on Thursday, June 21. This is a great Christian camp and the children will have a wonderful time swimming, playing games, attending concerts and finding new friends before returning home.

Youth Camp this year begins June 25 and the youth will return to Port O’Connor on Friday, June 29. The camp is at Camp Zephyr on the shore of Lake Corpus Christi. Several of our Port O’Connor youth are registered to attend this great camp.

Our Church Revival begins on Sunday, September 16 and continues through Wednesday, September 19. Brother Shannon Talley, Pastor of First Baptist Church of McAllen, will be preaching both services Sunday and at 7:00 p.m. each evening. Our Church men are meeting each Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. for coffee and prayer, praying for God to send a great revival to Port O’Connor! The ladies of the church have their Revival Prayer Meeting at 6:00 p.m. each Tuesday evening. Both prayer meetings are held in Fellowship Hall.

Don’t forget to vote and pray for our Nation daily.

See you in church Sunday!
