Kassidy Curry and Elise Pope who went wade fishing in Port O’Connor during spring break. They are holding a nice stringer of 20” trout caught on plastic shrimp tails. This was their first wade fishing trip and based on their enthusiasm and the amount of fun they had it probably won’t be their last. Who knows, maybe they will be future fishing guides! Kassidy and Elise are granddaughters of Nati and Dave Pope.

Keep Fit at Lake Texana and Other Texas State Parks

EDNA – We invite you to take a look at Texas State Parks to help you achieve your New Year’s fitness resolutions in an affordable “keep fit” setting.
Most Texas State Parks are available to the public seven days a week, year round and allow visitors to pursue physical fitness activities outdoors. This outdoor environment also provides a relaxing atmosphere for achieving wellness in body, mind, and spirit and an ability to soak up fresh air.

To take advantage of the many benefits of exercising outside, a Texas State Park Pass is available and allows the pass-holder and guests in the same vehicle to enjoy unlimited visits to all 94 state parks and enter without paying the daily entrance fee for an entire year. A single Texas State Park Pass costs $70. An additional pass may be issued at the time of purchase for an additional $15.  Texas State Parks Passes can be purchased on site at any Texas State Park.

“The State Park Pass offers the perfect opportunity for a family or group of friends to embrace health and fitness every day in a natural environment,” says Kelley Morris, park superintendent of Lake Texana State Park. “This is a great time of year to help folks get motivated to get back outdoors and embark on or improve upon that healthy lifestyle.”

In addition to camping, Lake Texana State Park offers many fitness opportunities such as family-friendly trails for walking, running, biking, and hiking.

In a recent study conducted with visitors to 70 of Texas State Parks, hiking was identified as the No. 1 amenity and sought-after attraction.  Lake Texana State Park will be conducting a survey of park visitors and local parties with the hope of gathering information that might spark an interest for a future fitness trail.

Lake Texana is located 6.5 miles east of Edna on State Highway 111, halfway between Houston and Corpus Christi.

Fishermen Legacy Project

Photo from the Seadrift Legacy Project web site.

This year Seadrift will celebrate its colorful one hundred year history with the 2012 Seadrift Centennial. Our community’s history is also the history of the local commercial fishermen. As a way to honor those men and women and keep their stories alive for Seadrifters and Texans in general, the Seadrift Legacy Project was proposed by an all-volunteer group of local citizens.

The Seadrift Legacy Project is a video oral history and on-line media educational website that shares the stories of Seadrift fishermen/women – in their own words. This year, in the project’s first phase and with a budget of $8,000, fifteen Seadrift fishermen were filmed and interviewed. In addition, Rebecca Byrd Bretz, featured portrait artist in Austin, Texas, volunteered to paint, at no cost, portraits of these fifteen fishermen. The paintings will hang in Seadrift City Hall during its 2012 Centennial year. Eventually, all of the Seadrift fishermen will be filmed in subsequent phases of the Legacy Project.

We are very pleased to announce that on October 15, 2011, an all-volunteer group of local citizens, friends of Seadrift, and artists and musicians from across Texas hosted the “First Annual Seadrift Fishermen Celebration” at the Pavilion on San Antonio Bay and raised over $5,000 for this project. We are only $3,000 short from making the Legacy Project a reality. We are reaching out to you, as a friend of Seadrift, for help. Any donation, large or small, will be greatly appreciated and all proceeds go directly to this wonderful project. Please give to this worthy cause by going to our website at www.seadriftfishermencelebration.org and making a donation on Pay Pal, or by writing a check to the “Fishermen Fund” and mailing it to: Seadrift Legacy Project w/o Donna Sue Williams, PO Box 211, Seadrift, Texas 77983.

We believe you will be as enthusiastic as we are about this project to honor our commercial fishermen. Information on the Legacy Project, photos from the October 15, 2011 event, and a wonderful section on Seadrift area boats and fishermen can be viewed at our website: www.seadriftfishermencelebration.org .

Thank you so much for your support of the Seadrift fishermen during our Centennial celebration.
Sincerely,
Donna Sue Williams, Janie Waghorne, Diane Wilson, Laurie Weaver, Sabrina Weaver
