Calhoun Air Center is honored to receive the 2012 WOAW Certified Women Friendly Flight Training Facility seal by Women of Aviation Worldwide (WOAW). This is the second year the flight school has been awarded the seal.

Calhoun County Airport manager, Dianna Stanger, commented, “Calhoun Air Center is proud that Women of Aviation Worldwide has recognized the efforts at our airports. It is extremely gratifying to be recognized on a worldwide level.”

To receive a WOAW Certified Women Friendly Flight Training Facility seal, flight training facilities must meet the following criteria: support community outreach programs towards girls and women and be actively involved in promoting aviation to women.

Mireille Goyer, Women of Aviation Worldwide’s founder, commented, “By becoming an active participant of Women Of Aviation Worldwide Week, Calhoun Air Center has shown its commitment to encouraging women to consider aviation as a hobby or a career. This is a very special seal that Calhoun Air Center earned through its positive actions.”

Calhoun Air Center is one of eight flight schools in the world to receive the award. The locations awarded the seal are flight training facilities known to seek and value female customers’ business.

The Jamisons and Duke

NASA’s youngest astronaut to walk on the moon during Apollo 16, Charlie Duke gave the main address at the Texas Outdoor Writers Conference in New Braunfels, Texas recently. His talk described his experience as yesterday though many folks were very young or possibly before some were born.

But those of us (and there were many) were glued to the television and remember when he talked from Mission Control to Apollo 11 as they were about to become the first landing on the moon. His immortal words when he heard “Houston, The Eagle Has Landed” (on the moon), Charlie said, “Congratulations, you have a bunch of guys (mission control) down here about to turn blue”!

That simply meant Charlie (the astronaut manning the control communications to the space craft from mission control called Capsule Communicator (or Cap COM), spoke to Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. It was because they all had held their breath for the difficult landing. Few people realized the lunar module in which they were riding, had severe complications with some instrumentation problems. Then Armstrong manually took over the controls for a perfect landing with only seconds of fuel to spare.

Since Apollo 11, there were several more flights to the moon. They were Apollo 12, Apollo 13 (aborted in mid flight due to an explosion), Apollo 14, Apollo 15, Apollo 16 and finally Apollo 17. That essentially ended space flight to the moon and the Apollo program. However, many years since science continues to study a myriad of scientific findings resulting from recovered lunar artifacts.

Duke continued with the space program with the birth of the Shuttle flights. They were launched to study our planet and indeed, the universe. Those many flights, dangerous as they all were, brought back studies that will fill books for years to come.

Of course, a lot of folks say we spent a lot of money on the moon and in the vacuum of space. In reality, there was never a cent spent anywhere in space. It was all spent right here in the good old U.S.A! Countless jobs were created by the space program and knowledge of our place in the sun is still being discovered as a result.

One of the big reasons Charlie Duke was invited to speak to the Texas Outdoors Writers Association is because he himself is a writer and outdoorsman. He published his own documentary book named “Moon Walker” some years ago and has had several editions since of the excellent account of his life and Apollo 16. His book is written in a clever down-home dialect that only a southerner from South Carolina could use.

The book includes his feelings, points of anxiety, and exhilaration of his mission accomplished. Though his modesty is reflected to a great degree, he frankly discusses in his book some of the technological challenges. He even discusses questions during his countless public appearances of personal difficulties including every thing from being away from his family to how he managed to go to the bathroom. After all, it’s what people want to know!

Nowadays, Charlie Duke and his lovely wife Dotty enjoy life as a typically retired couple in a beautiful area of Texas. Their two sons are off on their own successful lives and as always, share with the world profound pride.

The Dukes are no stranger to Liberty County, Texas. They spent many days near Dayton with friends and fellow astronauts. The major points were being with their kids here and joining with others and their kids doing what families like to do. Fishing, hunting and maybe even setting a trot line or two in the mighty Trinity River is what it’s all about.

General Duke and his wife are busy with their own personal ministry while touring the speaking circuit discussing their commitments to lives in the military, science, experiences of unimaginable excitement in space and indeed, how it relates to each of us and especially how it all relates to the Almighty. After all, it is a small ‘world’, isn’t it?

Dolphin Demise

Archived in the category: General Info
Posted by Joyce Rhyne on 22 Mar 12 - 0 Comments

Six dead dolphins were found washed ashore on Powderhorn Ranch beach last week. The largest appeared to be about eight feet, and the smallest about three and a half. It is believed they washed ashore the latter part of February.

Diane Wilson of Seadrift contacted the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network to report the find. This agency is the only one in the state authorized to deal with beached marine mammals, dead or alive.

The regional coordinator of the Network, Corpus Christi branch, could not say what might have caused these deaths. Stranding season (the time of the year when remains of marine mammals are more likely to wash up on shore) runs from December to April. This follows birthing season, so there is a natural mortality from premature births and early deaths of baby dolphins.

Persons finding a marine mammal in distress or a marine mammal carcass should call the Network at 1-800-9-MAMMAL.

Victoria Business and Education Coalition

Victoria Business and Education Coalition is a nonprofit organization that address collaboration between businesses and schools to help address student drop out, academics, and leadership skills needed to make the community a better place to live. Areas that we focus on that help is the SureBET Mentor Program – we have mentor labs in a variety of schools that help students improve in many areas of academic needs, overall support from the mentor, and encouragement to stay in school. All the mentors are volunteers from the area that assist these students. They are business leaders, retired citizens, grandparents, etc. We have seen 97% of our students in elementary improve by being involved in the program and about 84% have improved in our intermediate schools. We want to continue to offer more students this program so that they can be successful.

Business Cents – is another helpful program designed to teach high school students on how to be successful in a job interview. We address five areas of interviewing; resume writing, business etiquette, interviewing skills, dressing for success, and money management. We have business leaders from many of the industrial plants, banks, and other types of business speak to the students. These relationships help students hear directly from the business community what they expect from them when they reach out to their companies for a job.

Youth Leadership Conference – is a wonderful conference that is offered to students going into 7th grade. This conference is offered to all students in Victoria and surrounding counties. We have 100 students scheduled to participate this year at Victoria College. Each day we have guest speakers talk to students about what it takes to be a good leader and how to obtain those skills. We also have many great fun activities like rock climbing wall, water sports, and much more. All the students will have a day of math and science activities. Sci-Tech from Dallas will come down and do a lot of great experiments with the students. Pioneer Natural Resources is the major sponsor of the organization and will also discuss leadership qualities.

Sweet Success is a fund raiser to help us be able to offer more mentor labs and to expand our other programs. This is going to be a fun event. We are having a baking contest with four categories; cakes, pies, cookie/brownies, and cupcakes. The entry fee is $20 to participate. We hope to have many amateur participants from areas surrounding Victoria to show off their talent. We will also have a cake walk and cupcake booth for little ones to be able to decorate their very own cake. We hope to bring out a lot of talent and have a lot of fun for all the families. This is a wonderful family event! To attend the event it will cost $10 per adult $5 under 12 years of age.
