Following the opening of the meeting on Thursday, October 6th by President, Janet Johnson, another new member was introduced to the membership: Mary Covarrubias, who is no stranger to this area as she has been the Secretary for the Elementary School for a number of years. Welcome to retirement, Mary, but don’t get too comfortable!

And then an extremely productive meeting occurred. First, a huge acknowledgment and thank you to Ginny Lichac for the design, construction and placing of signs for our upcoming Garage Sale. The signs are being seen throughout the area and will inform all residents of this important money raising affair.

And, next, Lydia Strakos, Chairman of the biannual garage sales, announced that the Fall Sale would occur on Saturday, October 15th. The Sale will be held in the Pavilion at the Community Center with an opening time of 8:00 a.m. that morning. Arrangements for transportation of the stored items have been made by Lydia, which will take place late on Thursday afternoon. Work days for sorting and emptying the boxes of items should begin that afternoon and will continue on Friday in preparation for the 8:00 a.m. opening of the Sale on Saturday morning. And members were all alerted to select the items they intend to prepare for the Bake Sale as they will be contacted by Chairman, Sally Ragusin.

The biannual Garage Sale and accompanying Bake Sale are one of our major money-making projects that are used to fund annual scholarships for our local high school graduates and donations to many causes as well as the annual Christmas Luncheon to acknowledge our Senior residents. Therefore, each member has been contacted to not only prepare their special items for the Bake Sale but to be up at the Community Center on Friday and Saturday to help set up.

Information from Marie Hawes was placed before the membership concerning the possibility of HEB building a small pantry store in our area. Ms. Hawes stated that interested residents should contact HEB via their customer service number: 1-800-432-3113. This number is also available on the web site of HEB, which can be seen by entering heb.com on Google or Yahoo. By a telecon with the Customer Service Department of HEB in San Antonio, it will convey to that office an interest of the residents. This will not guarantee the building of a Pantry store, but it will possibly show a need of one in Port O’Connor and the surrounding area.

The next meeting of the Service Club will be Thursday, October 20th at 10:00 a.m. in the Community Center. Items on the Agenda will be the annual Christmas Luncheon with information concerning decorations and the menu items for the Luncheon and review of the successfully completed Garage and Bake Sale.

NEW AT THE LIBRARY: A way to go online and learn to become proficient in many of the computer programs now being used in various businesses and professions and just for you. Our main library in Port Lavaca is now making available to all residents classes online in the following software programs: Computer & Internet Basics, E-mail Basics, Social Media (Facebook, etc.), OpenOffice, Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Outlook. All you have to do is to visit our Library, sign up at the desk and then go online. What a painless and non-stressful way to learn!

Richard North Patterson is a favorite author; I’ve been fortunate enough to have available to read most of his books. He has spoken of writing several psychological dramas in the past; his next to last book, THE SPIRE was one of that genre, and he acknowledged that he was happy? to return to that style. But an earlier book, EXILE is really ‘off the beaten path’ for him.

Mr. Patterson’s background is law, somewhat political in nature, and a previous series is set in a political family. EXILE entraps the reader with the current state of affairs in Israel and Palestine; features the dailies of a murder trial, but gives the reader the opportunity to learn the “Why” behind the defense. The author gives an excellent source of information used for writing the book; in addition to actually seeing the places in the West Bank featured and discussed so well. Although I have read and re-read the information and people-contacts used in writing this book, I still wonder what prompted Mr. Patterson to spend the time, energy and money involved to produce it. He claims he has no previously conceived bias towards one side or the other, but I definitely do with learning throughout many years of the events leading to the formation of the State of Israel. Much information began with the purchase of land as funded by the
American, Rothschild for settlement in their homeland by Jews of many nations and backgrounds. The greeting, “Next year in Jerusalem” by one Jew to another is not just words, but a fervent wish.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and have made a list of the books the author used in writing it; just hope I will be able to get them from either the County or possibly the State Libraries. (As my space here is definitely limited, Henry would have a small conniption if I started bringing home large hardback books to keep, so they must be borrowed. He occasionally looks at my small collection of cookbooks and shakes his head, warning me that we’ll have a flat tire when we put the Air Stream on the road again, if I don’t eliminate some.) Do read this book; although published in 2006, it is still extremely current. The plot packs more than a few surprises and the major characters are those you would enjoy meeting, although somewhat carefully!

A fun book, at least for me, is Sophie Kinsella’s CONFESSION OF A SHOPAHOLIC. I’ve read two of her books previously, and thoroughly enjoyed them. She seems to write scenes that one reads with a suppressed giggle, and as most people really like to laugh, her books can make the day seem brighter.

The Youth of First Baptist Church, Seadrift, are selling pecans and other items to raise money for summer camp. If you are planning on baking or making candy for the holidays, this is a good opportunity to purchase pecans, walnuts, cashews and peanuts. Also available are candied nuts and pistachios, which make great Christmas gifts. Orders must be placed by October 19 and will arrive in time for Thanksgiving.

Matthew and Kathie Bates of Lake Hills, Texas and Michael and Bridget Raby of Port O’Connor are happy to announce the marriage of their children, Shawna Anne Bates to Nicholas Grant Raby.

The couple were united in marriage at 5:00 p.m., October 8, 2011 at the Historic Church at Brackenridge Park in Edna, Texas.

The bride is a 2001 graduate of Calhoun High School. She graduated in 2004 from the Cosmetology School in Victoria. She is the owner of Shearly Marvelous hair salon in Victoria.

The groom is a 1997 graduate of Calhoun High School. He is employed by Texas Parks & Wildlife in Port O’Connor.
