God continues to bless the Church in every way. Bro. George Yarbrough and his wife Barbara travel back and fort to Goliad, Texas each weekend to bring the Church a Spirit filled message each Sunday. The Church appreciates their devotion and faithfulness while the Church “Pastor Search Committee” continues their God led duty to find a new pastor.

Several of our Church members and friends will be departing this Monday, September 26, for four days at Camp Zephyr’s Senior Adult Retreat. Camp Zephyr is located in Sandia, Texas on Lake Corpus Christi and has a beautiful campus and great motel housing and meeting facilities. Those attending will hear outstanding Bible teaching by Dr. Jimmy Arnold, preaching by David Parks, who ministers at the “Cowboy Church” and devotions by Bro. George Yarbrough. Sue and Marcos Gohlke will provide a great musical program.

This coming Wednesday, September 28, is “See You at the Pole” day in schools all around the world. Our children will gather around their school flag pole before school and pray. They will pray for their school, their classmates, teachers, our Nation and leaders and our Service men and women. This is totally a student-led event, but if you wish, you may join them in the background. Pray for our children as they honor God this next Wednesday morning.

The Church had a fantastic “Ice Cream Social” recently. Bro. George led in a devotion and following that, the Church honored all those who had birthdays in July, August, and September. Fellowship Hall was filled with members and friends who enjoyed ice cream, cake, cookies, sandwiches, and assorted “finger foods”. It’s great to have fun and fellowship with friends.

The Church is looking forward to the visit of Sam Craig on Sunday, October 16. Sam will be singing and preaching on Sunday morning.

Our Church Choir will travel to Palacios on Monday, October 17, to sing at the Senior Adult Retreat at Palacios Baptist Encampment. They will enjoy dinner with the senior adults.

The Church is preparing for “High Attendance Day” at the “Great Day in the Morning” services on Sunday, October 30. At this annual event, our Sunday School goal is 100. Immediately after the morning service, there will be “Dinner on the Ground” in Fellowship Hall with a wonderful meal and super desserts. Everyone is invited to participate and enjoy the inspiration and fellowship.

Herb & Adell Reeves of Port O’Connor & Katy, Texas were honored for their 50th Years of Marriage and Ministry with a reception hosted by their children , Steve and Stacy Reeves of Katy,and Scott and Heather Reeves of Austin, as well as their grandchildren, John and Sarah Reeves of Katy, and Ella and Tessa Reeves of Austin. The beautiful vow renewal ceremony and reception were held in the Williams House on the west campus of Second Baptist Church of Houston on Saturday, August 27th from 2-4P.M. and was attended by a large number of family and friends with over 300 signing the guestbook. Special guests were present from their wedding party, Shirley Wade Thomas, Alice Reeves Blakey, Karen Fourmigue Reeves, and Randy Jennings. Also guests coming from out of state to share in this beautiful time, Elaine Tribble Glenn (La.), Gary and Rita Brown (New Mexico), and Nina Harris from St. Louis, Mo..During the vow renewal service, the couple shared the vows they had written themselves. Grandchildren John and Sarah Reeves sang Allan Jackson’s “If I had It to do all Over”. Son Steve sang “My Tribute”. Daughters-in-law Stacy and Heather Reeves and granddaughters Ella and Tessa Reeves shared a scripture reading from I Corinthians 13, and son Scott welcomed the guests and said a prayer of blessing and a closing prayer of dedication.

The couple was attended during the Vow Renewal Service by their two sons, and daughters-in-law, and their 4 grandchildren. Honorary Attendants were those from their original wedding party, as well as Denise Arnold, their grandson John’s sweetheart.

Friend Janice Daniels provided piano music for the Vow Renewal Service, and friends Jewell Goree, Patsy Dean, Jimmie Box, and Robbin Crowell provided soft piano music for the reception.

Herb & Adell were married on August 26, 1961 in Calvary Baptist Church in Corpus Christi, Texas. Herb & Adell met in Corpus Christi when Herb entered the University of Corpus Christi (now A & M at Corpus Christi) as a young Ministerial Student. After graduating from UCC in 1965, they moved to North Texas to where he entered Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, and he graduated in 1969 with a Master of Divinity Degree. Herb served as a minister to Texas Baptist Churches in Kenedy, Mineral Wells, Iola, and the Houston, and Katy areas. For the past twenty years he has been a Corporate Chaplain . Adell is retired from Katy ISD.

The couple thanks their children and grandchildren, and all of their extended family, and dear friends for their love, and for this very special celebration.

They have been coming to Port O’Connor for over 40 years, since 1969, first with Preston and Hazel Reeves (of San Antonio-Herb’s parents). Then after Preston’s death in 1990, and Hazel’s in May of 1994, they inherited (Reeves Boggy Lookout) on West Taylor. They continue to enjoy Boggy Lookout with their children and grandchildren. Herb has just recently decided to Semi- Retire, and hopes to spend a lot more time in Port O’Connor. They call it” their Little Hawaii of the Texas Coast”. They have found Port O’Connor to be filled with caring loving residents, and love being a small part of this great community!!!

The next Bunco Party will be Tuesday evening, October 4h at 7:00 p.m. in the back room of the Community Center. Call Shirley Gordon at the Library for further information, 983-4365. This is an amazing group of fascinating women that play Bunco each month; ages ranging from 20’s to ___! We all have a great deal of fun, and even enjoy playing! Our hostesses will be Joyce Jordan, Mary Ann Claiborne and Shirley Gordon; with that trio, there should be an excellent display of goodies!

The Service Club and the POC History Book Committee are searching for a picture of the ranch house on the LaSalle Ranch preferably back in the 40’s. If anyone has a photo in their possession and will lend it to be copied, please contact either Sue Kubecka, 798-0560 or Janet Johnson, 983-4733.

Though fishing tournaments seem to have occurred every weekend this Summer, the best is yet to come. And that is the Grand Slam Memorial Tournament in honor of Chris Ragusin. It will be held on the 7th and 8th of October. Do mark that weekend on your calendar. Planned are several auctions and a superb dinner following the weigh in on Saturday! You won’t be disappointed!

The Sports Association met on Sept. 19th and almost had a full house of interested people re the aims of this organization. Hopefully, this turnout will continue and really grow larger to work with this group. I’ve heard that one of the items for the agenda should be consideration of a swimming pool for the community. Granted it will require constant maintenance but should it not be thought of?

Lions Club are having once again an Ice Cream Social with bingo playing to follow. What a delightful way to combat our very warm Summer evenings! The day is Saturday, September 24th, the place is the Luncheon Room of our school, and it begins at 7:00 p.m., which gives you time to prepare dinner. Or if you don’t have the time, there’s plenty of ice cream available. And just melting a little waiting for you to get there!

Do hope that many of you readers were able to stop by and wish Joyce Rhyne a very happy birthday on Monday, the 19th. Believe me, she deserves the well wishes.

AND DON’T FORGET: THE SERVICE CLUB’S GARAGE SALE ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15th! I can almost guarantee that you will find that little something you’ve been seeking. If not, you’ll find something else quite as special. And do come and check out the baked goods; this group of women are known throughout the County as being exceptional bakers. Are your mouths watering, yet?

Unfortunately, I’ve been suffering from a bad headache for a week; this really meant that “NO WAY” was I gonna think about cooking! So, Henry got to remake his acquaintance with Art’s BBQ; the food is still as good as ever though we do miss the old building!

Over a previous weekend, the POC cowboys were at work; moving cattle from the Island to a trailer parked at the Fishing Center. Though I’m from California and knew a few cowboys on the local ranches, I do get an extreme kick out of watching the cattle being moved by a boat! Just hope I got a decent picture! Talking about items for pix, have you checked out lately the enormous piles of oyster shells across from Clark’s? Guess that means that us residents really enjoy our oysters!

Do put the following date on your calendars! Saturday, October 29th is the date of the annual Halloween celebration at the school – the parade of costumed kids begins somewhat early, but the most fun is seeing the kids in their costumes walking around before the parade. Do come and cheer your favorite kid or class!
