Port O’Connor Fishing Report By Capt. Bob Hill
We’ve really had a wild ride with the weather lately. Back on Labor Day the wind was the big thing. Then came about a week of really nice weather with cooler temperatures and mild breezes followed by more wind and heat. Now for the last few days we’ve actually had rain! Much needed soaking rain. Now the forecasters are telling us to expect a frontal system to cross the Coastal Bend late this week. By the time this issue is available we should be seeing the end of the front and the start of several days of favorable weather.
When things settle down we are seeing some real signs of fall fishing on the rise. The trout are showing in better numbers in the bays. Most have been small but look for that to change for the better as the water cools.
Reds are on the shorelines and in the lakes. I think we should start to see much better fishing in the lakes as the tides get higher and the water temps drop. The topwater bite for trout and reds is pretty good right now for waders working the south shorelines of the bays.
The jetties have been good some days and not so good some days. We’ve had some relatively calm days and that’s when the fishing has been peaking. Reds are showing in all sizes. Drum have been fairly plentiful. A few sheepshead, trout and even snapper have been mixed in. Capt. Bill Cunningham even caught a big ling last week. If you get about a hundred yards away from the rocks the sharks are pretty thick. Of course all the kids want to catch a shark.

Fishing with an Old Friend
Earl Grigsby Jr., retired Marine and an old friend that I haven’t seen in almost 40 years, came to visit Wednesday night. His neighbor, Terry, came with him.
We fished and caught up on old times Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
It was great to see him and to have enough time to “really” visit with each other.
