A meeting was held at 7:00 p.m. on March 3, 2011 in City Hall by individuals interested in supporting and working with a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of Seadrift as a City in December 2012. This was the first meeting to see what interest there was in beginning to lay the ground work for this celebration. In attendance were Jerry Amason, Joyce Amason, Jack LaBarge, Elmer DeForest, Tanya DeForest, Patrick Henley, Odis Lambright, Kathleen Lambright, Donald Miller, Janie Waghorne and Laurie Weaver.  Several in attendance mentioned other individuals that were interested in attending but were unable to do so. Numerous discussions were held regarding various historical aspects, anecdotal stories and etc. No decisions were made as to officers and leaders at this meeting.  Another meeting is scheduled for April 12, 2011 at 7pm in City Hall.  Everyone interested in becoming a part of this effort in whatever capacity should plan to attend.

Local realtor Russell Cain was recently honored by the Port Lavaca Chamber of Commerce for his many contributions to Port Lavaca and the county. He serves or has served in many organizations, most often in a leadership position. Among them are: Memorial Medical Center, Calhoun County Economic Development Board, American Cancer Society, Gulf Bend Center, Memorial Medical Hospital Foundation, Bluebonnet Youth Ranch, Port Lavaca Main Street Committee, Hatch Bend Country Club, Rotary, Al Amin Shrine Temple, and La Salle Water Board.
His previous honors include Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year in 1992, VFW Citizen of the Year, Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award, American Business Women’s Association Man of the Year, and selection by the Chamber of Commerce as one of the 25 Most Influential Citizens of Calhoun County in the 20th Century.
Russell Cain is active in Grace Episcopal Church. He is a real estate broker and the owner of Coldwell Banker/Russell Cain. A resident of Port Lavaca for over 50 years, he is a business graduate of Texas A&I in Kingsville. An avid golfer, he has been chairman of many fund raising golf tournaments. He can always be counted on to help with projects which aid the area and its residents.

A $1,000 donation was made by The Seadrift Seafood Processing, Inc., Hiep and Van Nguyen, to The Friends of the Seadrift Library for the renovation of the new library in Seadrift. Pictured are FOSL President Janie Waghorne, and Van Nguyen.

Seadrift – James A. Weaver Jr., 87, of Seadrift, went home to be with the Lord on March 1, 2011. He was born July 14, 1923, in Calhoun County, to the late James Andrew Weaver and Nora Belle Strawn Weaver.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Seadrift and a lifetime member of the V.F.W.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Weaver of Seadrift; son, James A. Weaver III; numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and two step-great-great-grandchildren.
Including his parents,  he was preceded in death by his brothers, Duff, George, Archie and Kenneth; and sisters, Mildred Hodges, Eunie Anderson, Iva Ray Harvell, Beatrice Guerra and Leona Reed.
Funeral service was held March 4 at First Baptist Church Seadrift, Brother Dennis Wittnebert officiating. Interment followed at Seadrift Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Jerry Weaver, Bobbie O’Briant, Gable O’Briant, Buddy Cross, Leonard O’Briant and Terry Maddux. Honorary pallbearers were Kenneth Wooldridge and Ted Gill.
Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of South Texas or First Baptist Church Seadrift Building Fund.

February 14:  Seadrift Volunteer Fire Department responded to a one-vehicle accident on the Old Seadrift Highway.
February 23: Seadrift VFD and Port O’Connor VFD responded to a multiple structure fire and resulting grass fire off of Carabajal Road. Port Lavaca Fire Department, Magnolia Beach VFD, and Olivia/Port Alto VFD also responded.
February 27:  Seadrift VFD and Port O’Connor VFD responded to a grass fire off of Lee Road. Port Lavaca FD also responded.
February 28:  Seadrift VFD and Port O’Connor VFD responded to a grass fire at Falcon Point Ranch. Port Lavaca FD also responded.
February 28:  Seadrift VFD and Port O’Connor VFD responded to assist Port Lavaca FD with a grass fire off of Caloma Road.
