Thank You!

I would like to thank each of you for the honor bestowed upon me as Citizen of the Year 2022.

There are others more deserving but I thank you.

I have been around for a long time here and have always tried to contribute to making POC the best it could be. We were the best kept secret for a long time.
That was when Service Club met at the Library (small room where fire department is now) with our enriched flour, Crisco and a pinch of salt; where we made pie crust. Bought apples and peaches by the crate. Peeled by hand. Cut up in our biggest pot added sugar, cinnamon and cooked. Cut pie crust in circles and filled with apple or peach. Fried in big fryer. Could never have enough to sell for our annual Fried Pie Fund Raiser.

What a difference a year makes. No more the best kept secret. We have to be happy and share!! Everyone needs to be able to share the blessings and love we have here. We have a very special knit community. I am thankful to have been a part of it before Stoffer and Pepperidge Farm, even Martha Stewart.

Enjoy every day here. Keep working. You have made POC a better place to live. Love you all.

God is good.

Mary Nell McGee

Can anyone say, “One Hundred, Six years young?” Yes, Port O’Connor has a special resident and star in Mrs. Grace Stone. She turned 106 on February 8! There were too many parties for her to attend them all and far too many cakes for her to much more than just take a taste of each. How many special Birthday Cards? We have not heard the final count, but we are certain that it will take her a while to read and then she will reread them again and again! Her daughter, Susie Onishi, will help her remember who each person is that sent a card and together then will be appreciative on all our grand gestures! Grace has most certainly seen more changes in America than any of us will. Grace could write our history books on the roaring ‘20s, our two world wars, the conflicts we have had and continue having, the many presidents, and of course the movie stars – those who brilliantly shone and those who only flickered! If you get an opportunity to go for a visit, get her talking about historical matters and bring note paper – you will be greatly enriched! Mrs. Grace, we love you and look forward to helping you celebrate many more birthdays!

Pastor Joane and I surely did appreciate the invitation to attend the First Baptist’s 25th Valentine Banquet. We remember at the first one, which was held in the Church’s fellowship hall and had such great food and fellowship. The one this year was especially special for us in that the food was excellent, the singer was superb, but the highlight for us was the awarding of the Citizen of the Year Award to our dear friend Mary Nell McGee. Mary Nell is truly a person of genuine servanthood. She not only has been a blessing to her church family, but this Port O’Connor Community has been enhanced by her many talents. Congratulations, Mary Nell!

Pastor Joane has been super busy with all the Ladies Activities recently. There were ladies who came from Florida to help her with her Birthday Celebration. She was a part of a conference designed for Lady Pastors in Houston and was an important part of their discussions. She has led in raising funds for missionaries’ Heart Fund – monies set for those going into the Mission Field to help them set up their households. It was in the form of a Fun Run, which was held at the Front Beach. She will be a part of our area Valentine’s Banquet at Grace Community Church. And, if that was not enough events, she helped celebrate our older daughter, Crystal’s, our younger son, Ray’s, our oldest granddaughter Ariel’s, and another granddaughter Lydia’s birthdays all this month! Did I say busy? And she attended one of her grandson’s, Shephard, hockey game in San Antonio!

While involved in all the mentioned activities, Pastor Joane continues teaching our Bible Study at 10:00 a.m. each Sunday morning, and preaching many of the services, including the 11:00 a.m. morning service, the 6:00 p.m. Sunday evening service, and the 7:00 p.m. Wednesday mid-week service. Busy, yes, but both blessed and constantly being a blessing! She is heavily involved in counseling as well. So, if you are searching for Pastor Joane, check her office first!

Captain Robert will be returning to Port O’Connor to conduct another Captain’s Class at the Chapel. It will begin on Friday, March 4, and end on Friday, March 11. Everyone who wishes to receive their “captain’s license” need to make contact with the Sea Academy as soon as possible. They can be reached at 361/785-6184. Captain Robert began coming to the Chapel in 2000 (25 years) and has helped many, both men and women, receive their licenses to help them with a life-style or simply to teach them safety that has been instrumental in saving several lives.

Fisherman’s Chapel is an interdenominational congregation whose main goal is to assist all of us in our journey from here to eternity. One will always find a warm welcome and all are urged to, “Come, grow with us!”

Happenings at First Baptist Church by Diane Cooley

This has been another busy month at First Baptist Church POC. The 25th Sweetheart Banquet has come and gone. It was a wonderful evening enjoyed by everyone who came, plus a number of our ill and homebound citizens who had meals delivered by Jim Cooley and Pat Eckstrom. Thank you to both of them for taking up this special deed. Lots of work went into making the evening a success Thank you to all who contributed their time and energy this year. There are too many names to list singly, but many POC Community Service Club members played a big part in the preparations. What a wonderful group of ladies and their husbands. Certainly, I can add FBC church members to the list. There was lots of decorating, cooking and laughing going on for the three days before the banquet. It is hoped that all who attended felt all the love that went into making it a memorable event.

FBC Team Kids held on Wednesdays at 5:30 continues going strong. Each week FBC church van picks up a full load and others are brought by their parents. They come to eat and learn about the Bible. If you know a child in Kindergarten through fifth grade that would like to be part of this, call the church at 361-983-2727.
If you are old fashioned like me and still like to pay for some things by check, are you finally used to writing 2022 on the date line? If so, that means the year is speeding by. February is half over. Where have all those days gone and what were we doing? What does this have to do with FBC, you wonder? Since the year is moving along so quickly, we need to start thinking about Easter on April 17, and the Kingfisher Beach Sunrise Community Church Service. It is always attended by several hundred people and is wonderful way to start that special day off. On Easter Eve, FBC has an egg hunt for toddlers through fifth graders on the church grounds. Make plans to reserve your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors and have them in POC for this wonderful weekend. If you need an Easter basket, free ones will be available at the church. After the hunt, Punch and cookies will be served in the FBC Fellowship Hall.

Several events go on at FBC each week. Come and be a part of it all. We are waiting to welcome you.
