Wendy; the winner of the 2021 Pumpkin Patch Contest; and Chris Kelly

Chris and Wendy Kelly of Seadrift have committed themselves to fund-raising events to help our youth in Calhoun County. Each event takes time, effort, and fortitude to see it through, and that’s no understatement!

The three events this year sponsored by the Kelley’s 501-C3 Charity entitled “Castaway Youth Charities, Inc.” were a BBQ cook-off, the “Pumpkin Patch”, and the “Spooky Patch.” The BBQ cook-off that took place in February included a redfish fishing tournament. The cook-off had 57 contestants! That’s a lot for a small town like Seadrift! The “Pumpkin Patch” is held the weekend before Halloween and the “Spooky Patch” is on the last weekend of October.

Many local youth-oriented organizations in our county receive donations from Castaway Youth Charities: church youth groups, the Boy Scouts, the FFA, and 4-H. Chris Kelly, owner of Castaway Lodge, Inc. commented that “We were trained that along with business success comes responsibility to the community.”

Chris Kelly came to Seadrift in 1993. Originally from Waxahachie, Texas, Chris had a background in the real estate business and was a hunting guide in the Houston area. Wendy came to Seadrift in 1998. Chris and Wendy were married in 2005 and built their lodge in 2006.

Encountering Angels

Driving through the small town of Seadrift, you may not expect to encounter “angels”. I can assure you, they are present!

My sister is battling cancer and like most cancer patients, has good days and bad days. On one of her “bad” days this fall, she came outside and found that her outdoor space had been transformed into a beautiful autumn scene. It brought her so much joy and gave her the boost she needed that day. There was no clue of who this amazing “Fall Fairy” or “Autumn Angel” could be. The surprises continued to come, always anonymously. Each surprise brought happiness to my sister and to our family and we truly felt the love.

Today was a hard day for my sister but was turned around after finding the angel came once again. This time, the angel (or angels) put up lights, a Christmas tree, and reindeer. The look on my sister’s face was priceless and the feelings she felt were indescribable. It gave her hope.

My sister and our family would truly love to thank this person or persons. Since we don’t know the identity, we have tried to pay it forward as a way to show our thankfulness. I believe that one day this “angel” will be revealed. Until then, I encourage everyone to be an angel for someone. And if you are driving through Seadrift, keep your eyes open. You may just see an angel in action.

Fishing with her dad, Dave Pope, Karen Parker, caught a nice keeper redfish the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Since they were thinking about turkey and dressing they decided to release the fish to fight another day. Dave said, “we taught Karen to fish when she was two years old. It was great to see her still getting excited about baiting her hook, casting and reeling in her own fish.”

On November 6th, a stunned Kemp sea turtle was found on Port O’Connor’s King Fisher beach. The sea turtle looked deceased, but happily, she was alive and just stunned by the cooler temperatures. She was rescued and transported to Rockport for testing, fluids and rehabilitation. She is doing great and on track to be released back to the wild soon. Special Thanks to Kelley Kowal, Brigid Berger, Chris Skeie, David Kowal, Bobby Smith and Texas Parks and Wildlife who all had a hand in this turtle’s rescue. If you ever find a sea turtle, dead or alive, please call 1-866-Turtle5 (1-866-887-8535) to report.
