Cold and Christmas Is In The Air
Greetings from the island everyone. I hope that all of you are doing well and getting ready for Christmas with friends and family. It certainly seems as though the holiday season sneaks upon us at a faster pace each and every year. I think age might have something to do with that.
Well, it’s not officially winter time just yet, but the weather conditions lately make it feel that way, especially the early morning thick-as-soup fog. I’m sitting out on the porch right now having my coffee, and I literally cannot see past the lagoon into Matagorda Bay, about a hundred yards away. I’ve already heard the unmistakable sound of two outboards running aground on the sandbars just off the shoreline. Luckily for them the tide will be incoming the rest of the day, and they should be able to push off. The fog is extremely difficult to navigate on the water, and it’s amazing how easy it is to get turned around and disoriented.
I’ve had a handful of nights on the island where the temps have been in the upper 30’s so far, with the hard north winds making it feel much colder. This is the time of year, each and every year, where I make sure that I am stocked up on full propane tanks for my little heater upstairs at night, my stove and my hot water heater. When stuck inside during the day, I just turn on a few burners on the stove top, and that heats up the small kitchen area just fine. That, along with multiple cups of coffee and hot chocolate, makes for a comfortable day when it is cold and blustery outside. I really don’t see how Santa handles that coldness up in the sky on his delivery nights. Brrrrr. .

I’ve been seeing a few ducks flying along the shoreline lately; it’s that time of year that they show up and stay a few months. I believe that most of them are Redhead ducks, and there have been times that the water along the bay shoreline was completely black from being covered by these ducks. I’m not a duck hunter, but I enjoy when some of the fellow islanders will drop off a few to me, and I’ll make a nice meal of flour fried seasoned duck breasts and gravy. I always make sure that my Indian Runner pet ducks don’t see what I’m doing, they might not take too kindly to that.
Lastly, for those that have been asking, I am completely over and back to my normal healthy self from the Covid issue. I had two positive tests and finally a much anticipated negative test result last week. . . yay! Thank the Lord and Twin Fountains Clinic for helping me through this ordeal.
