See the Christmas Star

On Dec. 21, people will have the opportunity to experience the same awe as the three wise men when they looked to the sky and saw the “Christmas Star,” or the “Star of Bethlehem,” shining brightly.
In an event that has not occurred in almost 800 years, Jupiter and Saturn will appear to almost collide in a phenomenon scientists refer to as a “conjunction,” making them look like an incredibly bright “double planet.”

The rare celestial event will be observable anywhere on Earth where skies are clear. The planets will appear low in the western sky for about an hour after sunset as viewed from the northern hemisphere, and though they’ll be closest on December 21, 2020, you can look each evening that week.

Stargazers merely have to look toward the southwest portion of the sky starting about 45 minutes after sunset on Dec. 21, and the star will be visible at night for an entire week
It’s a reminder of God’s greatest gift, where He revealed Himself in the form of His Son so His servants would know they are the recipients of the deepest love imaginable..

Last year a gardening program was started as a partnership between Port O’Connor Elementary and Emilee Deforest, Extension Agent in Calhoun County. The gardening program was a great success and has continued this school year. Fifth grade students learn responsibility by planting seeds, monitoring the health of plants, and the daily care (watering, feeding, trimming, weeding and fertilizing) of the plants. In addition, students have also learned the very important skill of working together as a team.

Our first Farmer’s Market, held on November 19th, was very successful. Students interacted with the public and sold their vegetables. We sincerely appreciate those from the community who stopped by to support our fifth grade students.

Thank You!!!

To all the participants, helpers, elves and captains we can never thank you enough. This year, the 18th, was by far the best yet. Many hundreds of children will receive a spectacular Christmas because of you and your special kindness.

It was a rainy, blustery and cold day this year but all the toys and all the boats made it to POC and unloaded a massive amount of new toys. Four giant trailer loads of toys and a full long-bed trailer full of bicycles and trikes. It was truly an impressive sight to see.

There are really too many people to thank individually so I offer my most heartfelt gratitude to all of you. You did good my friends. You did real good. May God bless you all and grant you a wonderful Christmas of your own and a very happy and prosperous New Year.

Angels really do exist.

Boat Parade – Best Overall

The evening of December 5th, the Port O’Connor Chamber of Commerce hosted the annual Port O Connor Lighted Boat Parade. The Lighted Boat Parade in addition with the Toy Run marks the beginning of the Christmas season for many in Port O Connor.

Twenty three boats formed the esprit de corps this year. . . Captains and elves crafted a nautical display of lights, laughter, and cheer as they navigated the ICW. A huge Thank You to all that participated, including the Coast Guard crew who graciously led the boats through the ICW.

Designation of awards this year was exceptionally difficult. All entries displayed extraordinary creativity. Recipients of this year’s awards are listed as follows.

Most Spirited- Bayou Pirates
Most Unique- Chris Wolf
