Yes, God Heals!

Dear Coastal Bend Readers,

In March of 2018, I was having a reaction to something I had eaten. Thinking heart attack, I went to Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room in Port Lavaca. To my surprise they said, “Well, Mr. Cain, no heart attack for you, but we found a tumor on your right kidney.”

God led me in there and then to the best possible place, MD Anderson in Houston, for many more tests, biopsies and x-rays. When I got back to Port Lavaca, the Swing Bed and Rehab Wing at MMC Port Lavaca was a very wonderful experience…the best care imaginable. Thank you, Dr. Richard Arroyo-Diaz of Memorial Medical Port Lavaca and Dr. John Papadopoulos of M. D. Anderson, for your care and concern throughout my illness.

My sincere thanks to all of our churches for your many prayers and thoughts, for the masses said. God asks for our praise and for us to tell others what he has done. Thank you again for everyone’s prayers. It seems God still has more work for me to do on this earth.

Letter to the Dolphin Talk

The Port O’Connor Improvement District is aware of an article published in the Victoria Advocate on June 30, 2018.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and as President of that organization, I feel it is important for the District’s customers to know that the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, or TCEQ, has not claimed that the District has delivered to customers unsafe water from its public drinking water system, or that it has improperly treated wastewater at its wastewater treatment facility.

The District takes its obligations to its customers seriously and owes it to those customers to set the record straight.

We have had numerous discussions with TCEQ promptly after its representatives conducted facility investigations beginning in February 2018. In correspondence TCEQ sent the Board in mid-May and in discussions between Board and TCEQ representatives, TCEQ has acknowledged that the Board is in the process of correcting the few items it has not already corrected following the inspection TCEQ conducted in March of this year.

The issue TCEQ has indicated through a spokesperson that is of primary concern relates to the size of certain of the District’s water supply lines. Prior to TCEQ’s inspection, the District had already been working with the Texas Water Development Board, through Project 21750, to use a contractor to replace certain small-diameter water supply lines with larger diameter lines. However, the Board has brought to the Water Development Board’s and to TCEQ’s attention the failures to comply with certain project specifications of a contractor it had hired in March 2016. Those performance issues have caused delays, but they have been corrected by TWDB Change Order No. 1. Therefore, the completion of the line replacement project will ensure that the District satisfies both TCEQ and the Water Development Board.

The District no longer relies on an outside contractor to operate the District’s water system, and therefore it performs those, and other, required tasks itself. For that reason, the District has ensured that it will provide TCEQ with monthly documentation that it flushes dead end water mains where those mains are installed with flush valves.

Finally, the District is in the process of demonstrating to TCEQ’s satisfaction that it verifies the accuracy of handheld chlorine disinfectant measuring equipment. As is the case with documentation of proper dead end main flushing, the District is able to be certain that it provides documentation of such verification.

The District takes seriously the responsibilities it owes its customers. It is important that we be able to ensure that our customers and the general public have a complete picture of the actions we take to satisfy all environmental, health and safety requirements. Actions speak louder than words, and our work with the TCEQ and Water Development Board will demonstrate those commitments.

Port O’Connor Improvement District

The Comfort of God’s Care by Donnie L. Martin

While there are numerous scriptures in God’s Word dealing with the Lord’s concern and care for His children, I’d like to offer the following few passages in illustration:

Ps. 36:7 “How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.”
Ps. 139:17 “How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! How great is the sum of them!”
Jer. 31:3b “…Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with loving-kindness have I drawn thee.”
Deut. 33:27a “The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms…”
1 Pet. 5:7 “Casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you.”

Almost everyone, with few exceptions, enjoy being cared for, and like to know that someone finds them special, in spite of their faults. That’s what’s so wonderful about caring parents. On the whole, parents love and care about their children despite their eccentricities or deformities they may possess.

The need to feel loved and cared for—this need to feel special to someone is no doubt a big factor in one’s desire to marry. It’s nice to know that someone out there loves us just the way we are.

But as nice as it is to know that other people care about us, it is even more wonderful to know that our heavenly Father cherishes us. He cares for us more than we can possibly know. This is the delightful truth running throughout Psalm 139. King David marvelled at God’s care shown to him throughout his life, and therefore gave the Lord praise with a grateful heart.

Dear friends, you may not feel very special, but it’s my hope today that you will simply accept the truth found in God’s Word which assures the Lord’s children, “…Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love” (Jer. 31:3b).

Warrior’s Weekend XII: Best Ever!

This past May 19th, 635 wounded heroes from the War on Terror descended on Port Lavaca and Port O’Connor for a weekend of fishing fun & relaxation. We are always amazed that they still love coming so much and know that as they are already asking if they can sign up again now. This year we had them come from all over the country again including Hawaii and of course, Puerto Rico. You know they love it if they are willing to travel that far by plane and charted bus for a 5-6 hour fishing trip. We told the young man, a Purple Heart recipient from Hawaii, that we all want to go fishing there and his words were, “Sir, it’s not about that”. We know and understand that, but they do love the fishing as well as all that goes along with it.

Although we do have returnees, there were many new attendees this year and we always try to emphasize that. Approximately 25% of the attendees were active duty personnel but all have served in a combat zone. Those are our requirements. The military bases involved included Ft. Hood, Ft. Bragg, Ft. Riley and Ft. Carson. The other attendees are medically retired. Our selection committee scans their paperwork to ensure they meet our guidelines and the military installations do the same for us.
For the first time ever, Warrior’s Weekend hosted pre-9/11 wounded heroes at our big event and the ones who participated, loved it. So did the younger ones love being around and fishing with them.

Once again, Port Lavaca and Port O’Connor served as great hosts for our heroes. If you either attended the event or even drove by during the event, you saw a small army of volunteers making sure the desires and needs of our guests were seen to. It does take quite an effort to put the event on and our volunteers are up to the task. The Garrison Command Sergeant Major from Ft. Hood told us that in his 34 years in the Army, he has never seen or certainly been a part of anything like Warrior’s Weekend. That says a lot about the work our volunteers put into the event, including our boat captains. We never seem to thank them enough and I’d like to take this opportunity to do so again. This does not happen without you.

Also, our donors are great. This weekend costs a great deal to put on as you can well imagine. We just had our first fund raiser for next year this past weekend and so are off and running for Warrior’s Weekend XIII. It is unreal how the time flies. Our first fundraiser of 2019 will be at the Port Lavaca Muster on February 2nd. This was extremely successful this year and if you’d like to be a the part of a fun filled evening, please contact us about a sponsor table. We believe we will sell out again at the VFW in Port Lavaca.

As you celebrate your freedom this 4th of July, please remember that it is these heroes and they that went before them that provide that freedom. We should never forget that. So, thanks again to all, especially the fine folks of Calhoun County and mark your calendars for May 17-19, 2019 to host the heroes again.

Thank You!

We’ve just experienced another wonderful Warrior’s Weekend in Port O ‘Connor. This event touches the hearts of many in our community, including the staff and friends of Tigrett Real Estate. This event, started more than 12 years ago by a group of local fishing enthusiasts, now provides a weekend of Fishing, Camaraderie, Bonding and Healing for our combat veterans and their families. Our task at Tigrett Real Estate has evolved from providing rental units to providing donated Accomodations for the veterans and families who drive in. Our ultimate goal is to provide the best quality housing available. This is accomplished by the generosity of numerous residential owners in our area who offer a guest room, apartment or even their entire vacation home to these heroes. We would like to take this opportunity to Thank Those who hosted or provided housing for our Heroes. This year we were able to make over 150 placements which accommodated over 350 people. Accomplishing this feat takes many volunteers who assist in the organization and physical placing of our heroes. Our Team includes; the Tigrett Real Estate staff, The Coastal Cleaning Staff, and many out of town and local volunteers. Thank You!
