Well, here I am again, ready to try and quit smoking for the fourth time in my life.

Strangely enough, the idea fills me with apprehension and fear, even though from the past experience I have in the matter I know exactly what I’m up against.

Three days till the nicotine is out of my system, probably quite a few weeks on the patch, and tons of battling the psychological components of smoking that are most likely the hardest element of quitting to experience.

There will be those strange dreams where I’ll sneak a cigarette in some surreal scenario, then wake up with that phantom feeling of guilt that will come with it.

I’ll have to arm myself like I’m preparing for a war, which I will be. Cinnamon gum and coffee stirrers to keep my mouth feeling busy, holding pens and pencils in my hands so they do not feel left out and of course answering the constant question of: “What do I do now?”

Because cigarette smoking kind of cements itself in our lives.

Stressful day? Cigarette.

Bad news? Cigarette.

Bored? Lots of cigarettes.

Thing is, despite the actual physical addiction lasting just three days time, it is the habit itself that makes it so hard to quit.

The cigarette when you wake up, the one after you have eaten, the one before you go to bed and the ones when you can fit them in while working. They all give our brains a dose of ‘rewarding’ chemicals that makes it feel relaxing, peaceful and desirable.

For the most part it is an illusion, whether you believe it to be an illusion of an addict’s mind or one that is ingrained into a person by repetition, which is usually the cause and solution to most of the things we wish we could change about ourselves or the world around us.

So the battle becomes much less with tobacco and nicotine than it does with those inner voices and thoughts that allow us to continue our bad habits, even if we know those actions are taking a toll on our bodies or our mental health.

I personally have quite a few medical reasons to ditch tobacco for good, from hypertension to major circulation problems. I also have a really good friend who means a lot to me whose own medical issues have been intensified by her smoking habit, but like many even this kind of data does little to help one’s choices, such is the hold these kinds of things can have on you.

So like many things, the first part is admission that yes, you are a fool when you wake up and light that first cigarette and start coughing like you have a terrible cold. You are being quite obtuse and are not practicing self-care when the doctor chides you for lighting up even one more time. You have guilt realizing that the money you are spending on this ‘old friend’ of yours is draining money you do not have and even costing you more money down the line in terms of health costs and insurance coverage.

So what is one to do?

Well, if one is lucky enough to have a newspaper column then one can put it in print, a contract made in the public square of publishing and declare it loudly that the next time you read this space I will be free of the chains of tobacco for the fourth and final time.

Anyone else out there care to join me?

Feel free to write in with your own struggles or success story and if enough responses are collected I will even dedicate a future column to the subject matter.

We are living in exciting days – we sincerely believe Jesus could return at any time and surely it will not be long! As a result of our conviction, we are doing everything we can to be ready and help everyone get ready for Jesus! Heaven is a wonderful promise available for all who will simply put their faith in Jesus Christ.

Pastor Joane and I had the privilege of attending a conference in Houston during the later part of February. We were challenged to do more praying than ever before. At this time, Pastor Joane is teaching the book, “Fervent” on each Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the parsonage. Everyone is invited and the books can be purchased. These classes will inspire attendees to a greater prayer life. Come and enjoy. For further information, please call Pastor Joane at 361/648-4622.

Our ladies had a “Sit and Be Fit” meeting, taught by Kim. It was a great time of fun, lite food, and fellowship. Carol is teaching a class on Crazy Quilting and the ladies are truly enjoying it. There is always food, fun, and fellowship and all are welcomed to come be a part of our ladies activities. The next event scheduled for April 5 is a Ladies Brunch at 10:00 a.m. Come and bring a friend!

Not to be outdone, our Men had a special Men’s Breakfast. We had 26 men present and they all went away “Fat and Happy”! It was full breakfast prepared by David and his crew. We will be hosting another Men’s Breakfast on Saturday, March 18, 8:30 a.m. All men and boys are welcomed to come and enjoy our “full meal deal”!

We celebrated the life of Frances Pressley on Sunday, March 12 in our evening service. Our congregation came together to stand alongside Trish and Frances’ two brothers. Many friends and family expressed our love for her and will sincerely miss Frances.

On March 26, at 6:00 p.m., we will be having special activities centered around our children. Angie is planning an evening for Missions, in which Mexico will be highlighted. We will be having our children dress in costumes and will be having food booths with different Mexican dishes. Our guest speaker will be Missionary Erny and Sandra Peacock, who have ministered in Mexico for many years. It will be a special time for everyone and all are invited to attend.

We are looking forward to our annual Easter Sunrise Service at the Front Beach. It is always a great time for us as a community to come together to herald, “He Lives!” Please plan to be there, remembering to bring a chair, and come ready to praise the Risen Lord!

Fisherman’s Chapel is an interdenominational congregation (meaning all Christians are welcome to become a part) whose goal is to help folks make Heaven our Eternal Home. One will always find a warm welcome at the Chapel and all are urged to, “Come, grow with us.”

A group of Senior Adults returned to Port O’Connor from this years Spring Senior Adult Retreat this past Thursday. I was one of the eight and it was simply a fantastic four days at Camp Zephyr.

The outstanding “Bible Teaching” was again taught by Dr. Jimmy Arnold. The Study was on “The Life Of Elijah” Dr. Arnold made the Scriptures come alive as he went through the exciting life of Elijah.

Bro. George Yarbrough was the leader in Devotions between the various Sessions and the Meals. The daily Preaching was expertly delivered by Bro. Sam Crosby, Pastor First Baptist Church in San Saba, Texas. What a powerful, loving, delivery Bro. Sam had!

Music was expertly delivered by Sue and Marcos Gohlke. We listened to solos, duets, quartets, and family hymns by everyone. Our Pastor, Bro. Donnie Martin, sang two solos that were well received, one was “We Are Standing On Holy Ground”. Sue and Marcus Gohlke were outstanding at the piano and their solos and duets. They led in good “Ole Fashioned Gospel Music” !

The three meals each day were fantastic: fried chicken, hamburgers, fish, mexican food, bar-b-q,and all kinds of salads. All kinds of desserts and drinks.

Seniors attending brought articles to auction off during the auction time to raise money for the camp. This was a real fun time. There was a lot of “Home Made” articles. I brought “Bags of my peanut Brittle” and the bags sold for $30 each! All the money went to the camp.

One evening we sat around the Camp Fire and made “Smores” and it was a lot of fun with all the Christian Seniors. The cost for all this Senior Fun was $100 per person, which included a Motel Room, all meals and refreshments.

The next Senior Retreat is September 25 – 28, 2017. If you would like to go, talk to Doyle Adams at 361-983-4866.

See you in church Sunday!

The Work Of The Divine Workman by Donnie L. Martin

Has life got you down? Does the reason and purpose for all your trials and troubles escape you? Without meaning to sound sarcastic, allow me to say, “Welcome to the club.” Realistically, it isn’t uncommon for God’s children to ask, “why,” when life’s pressures get to be too much. Knowing the answer to that inevitable “why” won’t make our problems disappear, but it can become the foundation upon which patience and persistence can be built in the midst of it all.

Perhaps the following true story will solidify my point:
During the depression a man lost his job, his wife, and his home, but he tenaciously held onto his faith—which was all he had left. One day he stopped to watch several men doing stonework on a huge church. One of them was chiseling a triangular piece of stone.

“What are you going to do with that?” asked the man.

The workman replied, “See that little opening up there near the spire? Well, I am shaping this down here so that it will fit in up there.”

Tears filled the eyes of the man as he walked away. God had spoken to him through the workman to explain the ordeal through which he was passing. It was as if the Divine Workman Himself had said, “I am shaping you down here so that you will fit in up there.”(1)

Don’t resist the work of the Divine Workman in your life. Though the result of His work may at times be painful, it isn’t without beneficial purpose.

“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you” (1 Peter 5:7).
