Fish Out of Water by Thomas Spychalski…

A long time ago I used this space to talk about gun control, and it was one of the most responded to pieces I have had the pleasure of writing for this newspaper. At the time I focused on the rights and wrongs of blaming the weapons themselves for the horrors of modern day mass shootings and acts of murder, siding with those that respect our nation’s founding document and our rights to bear arms.

This time, although I touched on it before, I want to focus on the perpetrators of the horrendous crimes and the way the modern media almost makes them into heroes for those with similar ideas in mind.

Last month, in Oregon, nine people were shot and killed and many more injured by a lone gunman who appears to have been socially isolated and cut off from the rest of the world. This is nothing new; I was one of those kids in my youth; it happens; not every kid nor teen can be the life of the party and some of us draw the short straw early in childhood socially.

However, while I might have wished to be able to escape my situation and the bullies that prey on such children, never once did thoughts of murder or blood shed cross my mind, even though I lived in a household that did indeed have guns.

Which is why I am writing this.

How can we blame an object when the much more dangerous thing are the minds of the people that have access to such objects? Has the world really gone so far into decay of moral fiber that the youth of today will kill with a smile before sorting themselves out?

But then we want someone to blame.

Should we target the massive news machine that pumps these images to us live as it happens, the magazine covers that make these despicable human beings like gods to their social peers?

Partially yes, because they do indeed almost seem to glorify the acts just by the constant attention given to them, then fruitlessly debate solutions to the problem at hand.

However, the real culprit is in our homes, our schools and in our souls.

When parenting has taken a backseat to mood altering drugs for children, producing psychological labels that ostracize almost as much as the ignorance they receive from their peers and our society in most regions of this country have degraded into the idea that only they matter; no more looking out for their neighbor or their fellow Americans, we only have our collective selves to blame.

In the 1980’s Stephen King started publishing novels under the name Richard Bachman, mostly old manuscripts that never saw the light of day or were rejected by publishers. The act was a stroke of genius by a writer I really admired because he did it to see how many books would sell without having the name ‘Stephen King’ on the cover.

The first of these was entitled Rage, about a teen boy who takes an entire high school class hostage and although he only kills one person, the teacher of that same class (and in fairness, something he shows remorse and pity for in the book itself), the book is almost a foretelling of the times that were to come.

King removed the book from his catalog and store shelves after several ‘shooters’ were found to have read or further identified themselves with the novel. Although I respect the author’s choice to control the publication of his own body of work and also the emotions he must have felt knowing his fantasy could have inspired such crimes, I think at that point we really were missing the point of the novel.

The shooters identified with the novel because they too felt as the protagonist, Charlie Decker felt. They felt left out and abandoned in a sea of people, too scared to see how brief of a time young adulthood is and for most of the individuals in these cases, had very thin to very abusive family structures to lean on.

Rage, from the title to the plot, reflected what they were feeling internally.

Now, that is NOT an excuse for the acts these young men have committed; murder is murder, and in my mind mass murder deserves the murder of the perpetrator if he survives. But when we look beneath the surface, a revelation of exactly why these young people were so angry, so lost and so disillusioned by the modern world around them that they turned to acts so horrendous and dire comes to light.

So, when yet another mad man goes on a rampage and starts to hurt, let’s not blame guns; let’s not blame movies or video games; let’s not blame music or television. Let’s place the blame directly at the feet of those responsible, which is every one of us when we turn our backs on others, and the parents of said children who should have been more invested in the miracle of life they created.

The old saying goes: “Guns do not kill people, people kill people,” but who killed those people from the inside before they picked up the gun?

Time to face up to the truth that most of the country has such a poor opinion of what matters and has lost sight of what is truly important in life…life itself.

Your Home Surveillance Could Help Police

As home surveillance is becoming more prominent in homes and businesses, it turns out it is a great resource for law enforcement. Modern home surveillance can record for months at high definition so it can be enlarged with great detail. Giving the exact time and date on every frame, it can also record in the blackness of night as if it were day by using night vision and infrared, in fact most home surveillance comes with infrared technology.

Today’s home surveillance also comes with a very powerful tool – instant internet download in real time. In other words, you can watch your home and yard right here in Calhoun County even if you are on vacation around the world and save the video or still images to your phone or website.

With home surveillance, you can let the kids play in the back yard while you sit in the front watching them in real time on your smartphone.

In a recent case in Central Texas, police were able to find a suspect who was later charged with the abduction and murder of a small child by viewing all of the home videos from surrounding blocks of the neighborhood.

Even local police use home surveillance in cases of local crime. Chief Bermea of the Seadrift Police Department says they use homeowners’ private home security cameras, and in one situation solved two burglary / theft cases in one night by utilizing local neighborhood home video footage.

Chief Bermea says his department have made multiple arrests as a result of video cameras as more homes install them. Some are in plain view, while others have been integrated into the home’s facades for cosmetic reasons. Chief Bermea has a good idea of how many cameras are in his community and where they are located, but will not release that number, only saying that some streets have multiple cameras. And that since these are private home systems, the department encourages homeowners to let them know if they have a video system in case of a crime in their area –  and that the Seadrift Police Department keeps that information private.  The use of home surveillance helps to facilitate a quick arrest, recovery of property and conviction, Chief Bermea stated.

We live in a truly modern world as law enforcement and homeowners become more technically savvy, trying to make our community a better place.

Grand Slam 17.24 lbs.; Combined 30.10 lbs.;
Big Trout, 7.88 lbs.; 1st Calcutta

The 10th Annual (and Final) Christopher Ragusin POC Grand Slam was a great success. We had 27 boats, and lots of fish were brought in. As we wrap up the tournament, I have to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who donated, fished, and sponsored us this year, and throughout all of the years. I cannot say it enough: without our community and support of others this would not have been successful for 10 years.

Ten years….10 years of laughter, friends, determination, tears, and hard work. Ten years of 5:00 a.m. start tags, weighing fish, and an amazing fish fry!! Ten years of memories…bittersweet as we close this chapter.

We cannot express how proud we are to be a part of such an amazing group of people and even a greater community. Thank you for 10 amazing years!!

Thank you,

Amy, Angelica, Sylvia & The Ragusin Family

September Wrap Up:

Calhoun County was the place to be for some outdoor fun in the sun.  The cooler temperatures were welcome to all the seasonal enthusiasts that visited us last month.  Despite the lack of Rice Crops, Teal Hunters had plenty of opportunities to get a taste of what’s to come in November. Teal Season Summary was shoot quick cause they are just passing through, it’s wasn’t a lock for getting a limit of birds. There wasn’t a stitch of rice to hold the birds. It also depended on your shooting.  If your group could shoot you  filled your straps. There were a few bird bands that were collected from the lucky hunters who were at the right place in time.

Gator Hunters were successful with a bunch of 10 foot plus lizards being tagged during the September season.  Alligator hunting is very exciting no matter what size gator you catch.  There will be plenty of Texans with new Gator Boots next year.  That’s really cool how these hunters utilize all of the alligator. It’s a very detailed and lengthy process with a ton of regulations and paperwork.  The local Alligator Guides in our County are known for getting the big ones so I would suggest you get your deposits into them for next year.

Fishing from the Colorado River south to Rockport was and is still off the charts.  Reds were tailing and schooling.  Flounder were floundering and jumping out of the water (That’s always a sight to see). Trout were slicking and slurping tops and tails.  There were a bunch of Black Drum being caught in the slot and not.  Big Uglies as some old salts call ‘em are always a line burner. They always make a young angler happy because it’s usually their biggest fish ever caught.  These Big Dinosaurs are a great catch and photo op but there needs to be some time spent after the CATCH, REVIVING these monstrous sea creatures. My rule of thumb for reviving these Big Uglies is double the time circulating water n oxygen through their gills. You fought her hard and she fought for her life so get down and dirty with her, get her into the water ASAP. Grab the tiger by the tail and rock her back and forth in the water.  If she blows out of your hand, great.  Spend time rocking her until she starts really trying to get away from you holding her tail.  If she floats up, turn her back up and keep working with her.  Don’t worry about getting your new Simms Shirt dirty and wet. Take plenty of time to “get ‘er goin” I have spent as much as 30 minutes getting one revived. Think about this for a minute, there is another up and coming fisherman that will enjoy breaking their own personal big fish record with that one you are reviving.

There are 5 big uglies I keep fed up for the kids and visitors in my neighborhood harbor to catch and release.  I only have the Big one nick named ( Tiny Tina). She’s about 40 plus pounds on the hoof.  She plays the game well, pulls the rod out of your hand, drags you around for a few minutes, gives up after a 10 minute fight, let’s you real her in, smiles for a Facebook Op. Everyone is amazed how big and sexy she is then she is let go. So far everyone has been really good at releasing and reviving her. After the phone photos we spend a few minutes in the water getting her gills pumping and off she goes to relax and do her thing.

Soap Box Summary:
Don’t just throw those Big Uglies back without taking plenty of time to revive em.  They want to live to get on Facebook another Day.

October is under way.  We are seeing plenty of nice bow kills.  The deer seem to be moving better in some places better than others.  The Book Deer are still staying away from feeders but the young ones are blazing in like they own the joint.

Goose and Duck report straight from Canada. There are plenty of them up there but the ones we came in contact with didn’t have much to say.  We saw a few flocks of swans which was super cool.  They seemed to fly higher than the geese that didn’t want to come take a look as us.  As Team Lester scouted , we noticed that thousands of Ducks and Geese didn’t seem in any big hurry to fly south for us to play the game.  The weather was mild and there are thousands of grain fields that had plenty of grub for them to munch on.  They had a lunch time buffet 24/7.  It was a great scouting trip with great guys and guides. We need to pray for cold fronts if we want any fowl for opening weekend.  The fishing will still be in play but there’s nothing better than a little Cast and Blast action on the Middle Coast. Get your dates and deposits in cause it’s going to be a good year.

The Mowdy is always on the water and the airboat is ready to go! There might be 1 opening left for the opener so give Scott a call at the Lodge.  We look forward to seeing you and making memories in the outdoors. The Saltwater Lodge Hotline is  (361) 785 DUCK.

Wishing for cold fronts, Whistling wings and Waders without holes,
